Pluto

Gesicht, an android police detective of Europol, is tasked with finding the murderer of Montblanc, a retired war hero robot. Although it appears that only a robot could have committed this crime, the murder of a renowned robot rights activist casts doubts on the criminal's identity. Indeed, outside of an isolated and unexplained incident that occurred eight years ago, robots are programmed to be unable to kill human beings. However, the lack of human evidence on the crime scene and the similarity of modus operandi lead Gesicht to suspect that the two murderers might be the same being—be they man or robot.

Shortly after Montblanc's passing, another retired elite war robot is mysteriously eliminated. Gesicht notices a pattern in the choice of murder victim: both dead robots belonged to a group of the seven most powerful war machines ever designed. Determined to stop the murderer from eliminating the five remaining veterans, Gesicht seeks help from Atom, a cutting-edge android who resembles a human boy. The duo must now hunt down the rogue killer before the series of murders is carried on, lest the very fabric of society suffer irremediable damage.

It’s such a shame that a free-form medium like Anime which allows for varying approaches to storytelling, to be so streamlined and limited to a fraction of what it can really branch out to.

You have all kinds of fantasies and epics adapted into a firm bundle of eye-ear-orgasmic animation and sound that draws you in like nothing else, but there is so little dedication to more realistic stories that grip closer to reality it seems.

Pluto, is, however, a grim detective thriller set in a sci-fi near future with real-world-like geo-political tribulations with a sprinkle of existential amalgamations.

The marine lens follows Gesicht, a top-of-the-line android detective ... who finds himself involved in investigating the murder of one of his old war pals in what was both bone-chilling and thought-provoking journey that challenged not only his “humanity” but also the human consciousness of the viewers.

Both the animation and sound design were world-class standouts, And by no means overshadowed the genius of the core plot of the show but they also remained a force to be raised on their own. It’s one of those shows that give the feeling that you’re not watching an Anime, and rather, a TV show that’s more real than most live actions even are.

We can’t talk about this once-in-a-decade masterclass without bringing the characters under the spotlight because they were nothing but exceptional. For instance, Gesicht and Atom are more “human” than many humans in the show despite being robots at core, and it’s not the cosmetics that sell it the most as much as their expressions and interactions do to the point where the fine line between a human and a robot gets so blurry that existential questions bring out themselves on their own under the form of real events that take precedence in the story.

Especially for fans of author Naoki Urasawa’s other works like Monster. Pluto embodies his unique style in depicting a real-world-like narrative under such a believable image that it’s criminal not to bring it up in every other conversation. This is a classic to be watched and recommended for years to come.

Mixed Feelings

Unimpressed.

Technical side is well done: animation is fluid and interesting, characters are drawn in a semi-realistic way which gives the anime a more serious and mature tone, backgrounds are nice, the soundtrack is excellent.

According to the one who made the story of this anime (or manga, if you want), "perfect intelligence" is a purely quantitative construct. Really? That's it? How absolutely underwhelming. Apparently, "perfect intelligence" here is nothing other than a sum of all individual human intelligences that exist in the world (which therefore is equal to the number of humans, in anime that is 9.9 billion of them), and since you would need almost ... an infinite amount of computing resources to simulate them all at the same time within the same robot, not to mention the necessity to resolve all the contradictions between them (of which there are many, just think of different worldviews those 9.9 billion hold), the authors then conclude that "perfect intelligence" may exist in theory, but in practice a robot having it never "wakes up" (that is, never begins to actually function upon being loaded with all those 9.9 billion individual intelligences), and therefore - "perfect intelligence" cannot exist in practice.

That is laughably bad. Just how asinine people behind this creation are, exactly?

What this anime, or this whole idea, story and plot, want to tell you is that intelligence is purely and only quantitative. So a "supreme intelligence" likewise is purely quantitative, a sum of individual intelligences. By necessity then, there is no inherent quality to human intelligence and, what is also important, there are no human intelligences inherently superior to other human intelligences. So a genius of Beethoven, of Buddha, or Jesus, or Mohammad, is based on an intelligence no higher, no better, than an intelligence of some low-IQ petty criminal, or what have you. But that is absolutely false. Not to mention that the whole idea of quantitative intelligence that this anime peddles is logically NOT proven by it. Just because, as anime portrays them, some of the brightest minds state that something is this way or that way, does not mean they are correct. This should be obvious, no? But anime never, EVER even tries to discuss the premise it puts forth, never even tries to bring a character that opposes this idea. Instead we are to take it at face value and proceed like it is a settled matter.

Which, then, causes a whole lot of issues. No, you do not "need" to insert EMOTIONS, especially supposedly "unbalanced emotions", into an intelligence, in order to actually make it a functional intelligence. Because emotions are subordinate to intelligence plain and simple! This is why human intelligence is superior to that of a cat, even though both humans and cats can experience possibly the same kinds of emotions. Why exactly does one even need these supposedly "unbalanced emotions"? It is not like half the people are permanently hateful, the other half being loving. The anime wants me to accept how a "perfect intelligence" is not only primarily quantitative, but also that 9.9 billion individual intelligences are simply in a state of "equilibrium" between all the possible states of mind. But most people are peaceful. Most people are loving. Most people condemn crime. Etc. There is no, actually, equilibrium the anime implies.

Well now I got a bit lost in my own considerations here, and I cannot express myself quite coherently just yet. I finished this just an hour ago.

I still gave this 5 out of 10, on account of high-quality production values, music, compelling first several episodes, some very good characters and so on. But I was getting increasingly annoyed by the end of it, that the last episode I mostly just spent skipping through.

P.S. Might edit the review later. "Later" including months, years and who knows...

It's bad, really bad. The world was intriguing at first, society where robots blended in but not fully, and that creates some conflict

But they thrash it completely: robots can't lie, but actually they can, robots can't kill, but actually they can, robots don't have emotions, but actually they have.

Robots here basically humans, sometimes with abilities, like x-mens. or tosters. And I expected to be sad because kid toster is "destroyed", but there was zero attempt to build any interest to said toster, so I don't care.

Episodes are long and all over the place, they could change the pacing in the middle of episode and ... move it to completely unrelated direction. And honestly, they simply boring most of the time, IMO only detective story is interesting somewhat.

Episodes mostly has no logic, characters can teleport whereever they needed by plot, make decisions that completely illogical, find out or forget their abilities.

The ending is boring, pointless exposition dump, and main villain just meh

Picture is nice though, the only positive thing here
