Both main characters have to go through painful experiences to finally save the people around them. Both of them repeat incidents.

There are several factors that provide some similarities between both shows. For one thing, the main protagonist's have a mental age that surpasses far more than they appear to be, giving them the advantage of years of experience and wisdom. The key theme between the two is mystery solving for the purpose of finding out the truth and uncovering the culprit behind the murders and preventing it by whatever means possible.

Probably a huge spoiler, but their point of origin is exactly the same. Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica seemed like the "sugar-pink contacts on for some tension" version of Higurashi series after I finished watching it.

Although Higurashi is less repetitive, both are second seasons with the idea of an 'eternal summer', only one person who remembers all of it, deja vu with the other characters, and a 'god' behind all of it.

-same atmosphere -same setting -same feeling - lots of blood, horror. Really recommend Shiki if you enjoyed Higurashi

Protagonist suffers through time loops as they try change the outcome to save their close ones, as this attempt more often ends in violent and gruesome end to not just their lives as a new loop starts. If you enjoy this concept, give these a try.

Both have some drama, big mystery, slight thriller/horror and series of murders.

Both anime tell a stoy in a non-liniar fashion. The stories skip back and forth through time, and nothing really makes sense until near the end.

In Higurashi, I was like " who's the next killer?" or "I wonder who's next to die heuheuehue" . But in Kai, I started to like the characters and cheer for them wishing to not be hurt or not to die again which is I why I chose the 2nd season of Higurashi in this recommendation. The same goes for Shinsekai Yori, at first you don't about the people in the story but they'll eventually grow on you, atleast that's the case for me. Both anime have great suspence, amazing developments, and mind puzzling stories.

The prequels were question arcs, these two particular titles are answer arcs. Two similar series where Main Character is trapped in time leap after death, trying to save her/his closest friends. Really well-written tragic stories.

It has a great storyline and is full of gore and blood!

These 2 are sequels to a series which have developed a deep mystery, but did not reveal a lot of answers. Finally, the answers are revealed (even if bot all in SNK s3 but a lot more than its prequels). There are too many secrets. I found them totally mind-blowing. It's interesting to see the characters make deductions and strategies. You might come to know that there were hints in the prequel but you missed them or things you thought to be less important turn out to be a key to solving the mystery.

(duly note that both being the second seasons of their anime series, I choose those because they were most a like) Yes this seems like a BIG jump, but is it really? Both are hardships animes, all about friendship, no friendship then everything will fall into pieces. This is about trust, this is about development of friendship and it is about doing what ever to save one another, the sacrifice. Of course the big difference is that Higurashi has all its gore and horror elements and Little Busters being much more light hearted with the comedy (but still heavy with its feels). But without spoiling both then they  read more

They seems to captures the audience to grapple the edge of their seats

The main characters do not resemble each other, but the side characters of the two animes are similar to each other. Most of the side characters are girls, and there are two little and mysterious girls in the two animations. One of the horror moments of fantasy kind is they have deep backgrounds and similar storylines to each other.

A girl and her alien friend are trying to achieve what seems like an impossible task, but maybe with the help of their classmates they will succeed. The alien friend also seems to not remember some important things

The main/final focus is to defeat fate/power related to time loops but along the way, it features occasional slice of life bits alongside even comedy too

Both are radically different from the original series, that show you the truth behind everything that happened behind the scenes.
report Recommended by eblf2013
Both are about a group of children and teens unveiling a terrorist conspiracy, main characters being shunned for their parent's fault (Takakura children in Penguindrum and Houjou children in Higurashi) and discussions whether a cruel and apparently unscapable fate can or cannot be changed.

both being around notable video game series as well as having a young cast and also moments of suspense and blood as well too and a much bigger plot unfolding with a malvolent force behind it.
report Recommended by Disapeared_Ghost
Both deal with friendship and failure to overcome past trauma while trying to find a world where peace can exist. Though Higurashi is very much a more horror-oriented show its 2nd season deals with similar dramatic issues.

both seem like a happy go lucky fun anime until they peel off their facades and get to work on your brain. Both are very cute even in the violent parts. Both have stellar music and both are hallmarks of their genre. Also both are must-see tv

Note: This is for both seasons of Higurashi Although this may not seem like the most likely paring of shows, when you boil them down they can be quite similar: The mystery (phantom to a lesser extent) as the story slowly unfolds, the layers of drama and tragedy, the drive for survival, the insanity. Both of these shows tackle similar ideas; however, they just present them in different ways. They both cover the themes of: trying to protect those you love, dealing with loss, and hatred. Most of all, they are both about obtaining freedom. On a more obvious note they are both great thrillers  read more

well first they are happy then you start learning about the characters more and it gets sad but ends up ending happy both are realy good and i like both anime so ya

Both involve girls running around with gigantic sharp objects, cutting stuff up. Must I say more?

For the same reason I made the recomendation for the first season of Higurashi, I liked the plot twists in both of these, though Durarara is less in the horror genera, and more in the mystery.
report Recommended by Yemi_Hikari
They both have gun's and fighting scenes (more like gunslinger girl near the end of higurashi )

These series aren't alike at all really. But at the same time there is something that sort of reminds me of the other. While in Higurashi the characters are close they aren't so much in Bokurano. There is an hanging feeling of hopelessness and despair in Bokurano because of what happens to the pilots of the Zearth the same hopelessness and despair is easily found in Higurashi too.

It's just like the 1st Higurashi only it's the 2nd season. All the mindf*** goodness one would want.

I recommend not the whole 'Tantei Gakuen Q' series, but episodes 16-21 - that's another 'kamikakushi' (spirited away) story about an isolated village, including viruses, officers and mysterious murders and disappearences.
report Recommended by SuperSamos
In both anime main girl character (Rika and Pacifica) are trying to escape from their destiny which is their death. Also, many people want them dead. But all these girls want is a normal life with their friends.
report Recommended by PerlaNemesis
They are both about a MC that recently moved to a small village without knowing the backstory of it. They both give the same atmosphere when watching and you can relate both of these anime very strongly.
report Recommended by lovethorfinn
Franchise that started as something that looks innocent and just slice of life-y cute girls has now become a tragic story that takes psychological toll on its characters. If you like such switch, you will likely enjoy these.
report Recommended by abystoma2
Two rather mature anime, there aren't all too many similarities other than slight bits of horror and quite a lot of blood. However, one thing that seemingly stood out is the character's experience of multiple deaths.
report Recommended by DivergentKarma
Blood, violence and horror.
report Recommended by AlucardReal
Both series have similar setting, in a small and quiet village. Both plot starts out with the main character trying to unravel the mystery behind the village mysterious occurrences. And in the end they find the truth and if everything that happened is supernatural or human doing. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni has much more gore and violence than this.
report Recommended by Lamii
For both of these anime, time plays an important factor in developing the story, more so than we might originally think. Redundancy within the shows hints at the importance of time. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai is more modern and Kurozuka is much less so. Supernatural ideologies are also important for the plots of each. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai's art style and school atmosphere make it less thought provoking and easier to relate to than Kurozuka. Kurozuka is less-straightforward, but has more action, more plot twists and more detailed art.
