The prequels were question arcs, these two particular titles are answer arcs. Two similar series where Main Character is trapped in time leap after death, trying to save her/his closest friends. Really well-written tragic stories.
Both are somewhat stuck in a time loop.
If the main characters die, they restart at a certain checkpoint.
Re zero still has a lot of plot holes while Higurashi solves the mysteries.
Episode 13 is a masterpiece of an episode for Higurashi, and I think that's where it hit its peak back in the day. Re:Zero hasn't really hit its peak yet.
