Besides from being the same author, both the stories have incorporated some fairy tales into the main story, and most of the time it ends tragically or violently.

Both are period pieces featuring a handsome and knowledgeable yet mysterious young man who becomes involved in unravelling a series of mysterious cases, including crimes. Both series also deal with the protagonists' backstories and complicated family histories.

Both Death Note and "The Cain Saga" aka Count Cain are about characters who search for mass murderer(s) in order to bring them to justice. Both are dark, but are lightened up by friendship, etc. Both have their bloody parts, but Cain is more gore afflicted than Death Note.

The gothic thematic of the mains stories of the Poe Clan are very compatible with the atmosphere from the short stories of Count Cain. Edgar has a little sister he adores and has some weird gothic enmeshment with due to turning her into a vampirnella, and also Alan to have weird bisexual vibes with. Look Edgar is usually more serious than Cain but they're both pretty, tormented and like to meddle in people's lives usually with disastrous results for them.

If you like suspense and mystery in your shoujo, you should check out sensei 's other works. Then take a step back in time and read Count Caine, who does the manga version of victorian goth novel dressed up in got his lolita.

Both stories revolve around the use of poisons and power struggles. Both have tragic circumstances around the deaths of characters important and supporting to the main character. Both involve family lineage and succession. Hakushaku Cain Series is more gothic styled with a male protagonist, while Apothecarius is more feudal/medieval style with a female protagonist and a side plot of romance. Yet, both have a melancholy flavor.

The premise of these manga are actually different. While one is set in a fantasy world where necromancy is possible, the other is set during the Victorian era where a young noble boy solves unusual mysteries. The one commonality among both manga is how the reader is led to believe one thing during the beginning of the chapter, only to realize how unique the characters' motivations are, which lead to quite a few fascinating/surprising endings. So if you enjoy episodic mystery/thriller stories, you're definitely gonna enjoy both the manga.
