Original story, but completely different otherwise. Might not enjoy it but its nice to see the source material for Pluto.

Both narratives deal with mature themes such as humanism, war, etc. Both manga have main characters that are robots/androids that believe in equality for all beings and organisms. Both stories symbolize the triumph of good over evil.

Both are superhero manga with strong themes of self-sacrifice. Both play around with what it means to be/not be a human.

Both are defining superhero manga with heavy anti-war themes. Both feature themes of self-sacrifice and humanity. They differ in the way the protagonist chooses to respond.

Both are defining sci-fi manga featuring two of the most iconic manga characters. Titular characters are both robots.

Same mangaka. The 'Once Upon A Time' story arc in Astro Boy feels like it could be a Phoenix arc, in it's scope and ideas. Also, the titular characters are both 'immortal'.

Both are long episodic works by Tezuka. In both cases the protagonist is somewhat super-human, be it robot or gifted surgeon, and promotes the triumph of good over evil.
