Both are manga set in Yoshiwara brothels, about oiran. Sakuran is shorter and mostly deals with a rivalry, but there are similar story arcs in Oiran Neesan.

In both Mangas the Heroines are courtesans with great character and tells about their private life and Feelings. I also thougt by reading that they had a similar atmosphere, because of that they were interesting enough that i couldn't stop reading until the end.

Manga depicting the lives of brothel girls. While having historicall setting, one is about western brothels and one about eastern. Being made by the same author, they have similar style.

Both are tragic stories about prostitutes in Japan, as told by accomplished female mangakas

Both manga are about oiran, high ranking prostitutes, in Yoshiwara. Both stories contain elements of struggle between women to reach the highest rank. Seirou Opera also has a mystery component and stays much more shoujo pure.

Both are short series that take place in a pleasure district in Japan. Love Water's a more light-hearted yaoi Novel while Sakuran is a much more dramatic Manga. Both very interesting.

Both have strong and occasionally foul-mouthed heroines. Both plots are a mix of the comical, dramatic, and sad. Just, beware of the smut in Sakuran! :D

Both series are based in a much older time within the country of Japan and have a very historical feel. Not to mention, there is also romance in both: more so in Rurouni Kenshin than Sakuran.

Both series have sex, many of which are against the protagonist's will, and are of the romance genre as well as drama.

While there are no life-affirming friendships made in Sakuran, the to-your-face realism found there is similar to many of Ai Yazawa's works. Kyoha's contemplation of love (and its weakness) brings Nana K. and her disastrous love affairs to mind.
