Both of these titles follow couples who maintain a sexual relationship without involving any romantic emotions.

Authored by Inio Asano, both of these titles share his realistic approach to coming-of-age narratives.

Girl on the Shore is like a FAR more sexualised/smutty companion piece to Aku Hana. The same intoxicating, utterly depressive vibe as kids at school enter into manipulative relationships as a depressing, suicidal tone permeates everything. Kids dealing with sex and fetishes more casually, in contrast with the purepure 'first kissu' approach of practically every other manga/anime.

Two erotic mangas, which in addition to having sexual content, focuses on the life of a teenager and how it becomes a sex toy, how feelings get confused, while wounds are opened. The protagonist girl gets involved in the struggle over her life, becoming addicted to a relationship that does not know where it will go. Both show a realistic touch, an art that shows you what they are feeling, and how everything seems to become deeper and more dramatic, following the pages.

Both mangas envolve teenagers, feelings and sex exploration. Umibe is most focused on a message and has better characters while Sundome is more fun and dramatic otherwise.

Both take realistic take on love.

Both titles involves complex love stories with a dark tone. Though sexual depiction occurs more frequently on Umibe no Onnanoko. Musume no Tomodachi also involves heart wrenching struggles of a teenager that fell in love.

If Girlfriend intrigued you then Umibe is a much darker take and a far more developed character study of teenage romances not being some fluffy high school sweet heart experience but a possibly more destructive experience. For both girlfriend and Umibe the male main character side is explored heavily. If you like Girlfriend you'll more than likely like Umibe

A couple, a codependent relationship, growing up, being bored, having sex, being lonely, slowly understanding yourself and your partner. Two really good titles to read whenever you get nostalgic about your adolescence and want to be reminded of how horrible it actually was, but in a poetic way.

Both titles are coming-of-age serialisations revolving around young kids and their foray into "adult" relationships.

The main reason behind the similiarity between these two stories might be spoilerish, but it ultimately lies in the relationship between the two main characters and the mutual use and abuse they make of each other.

Growing up and having sex is the story of many people's lives. These two look at the dark side of it, where it turns destructive and addictive. Arigatou is notoriously dark in the beginning and even if it's just as graphic as Umibe no Onnanoko it contains some nasty rape scenes that make most people stop reading. Luckily it moves on and is a very rewarding read just as Umibe no Onnanoko.

These two both contain a similar power structure between the two main character, sharing a sexual relationship that’s not about love. Both are quite equally bleak as well, but Bokura no Fushidara contains a lot of fantasy elements.

Two quite similar romances, Last Menhealer is somehow less focused on sex and does not have the "Asano-feeling" of melancholy, but it's still great (by the author of Onanie Master Kurosawa). Both share a couple having a secret, twisted relationship evolving into love for one of them.
