Both of them have a similar underlying theme of "the power of language" and the difficulties brought by not speaking the other's language. Altough it is a much more prominent theme in Heterogenia Linguistic, as well as it being the central theme of it, it is still also heavily present in Doubutsu no Kuni's earlier chapters. Doubutsu no Kuni puts its empashis on society as a whole, applying human behaviour into the animalistic rules of nature, and how being able to understand other animals affects life together by introducing empathy through understanding. To be honest, I think these two manga's are similar. Although the story plots are different, I believe Ushio to Tora has a similar feeling, and leaves a similar impression, as Doubutsu no Kuni. (Also there is the kid/"cat" pair).
