“Wow, this is absolute trash.”
“Wait, why is this actually good?”
“Just one more chapter before bed…”
“My IPad just died during the middle of the chapter, are you kidding me? I guess I should go to sleep.”
“Okay, only after I finish that chapter, I can’t leave it on a cliffhanger”
“It’s already 1 a.m? Crap, I have school tomorrow.”
The above were all of my thoughts from this journey of a manga; regrettably, I did not finish the manga before bed, so I was even more conflicted on this score than I had been. From the deepest part of my soul, I wanted to hate this manga
...
due to how ridiculous some of the characters acted and how the story initially progressed; to add to that, everyone else had a complaint, so I’ll be weird if I didn’t hate this manga, right? Wrong. This manga is unbelievably engaging, heartfelt, and simply amazing, whether it be due to the writing, the somewhat predictable but common plot, or the characters; scratch that, it’s definitely the characters.
The characters in this manga are university students, so they have a different or refreshing persona from the usual high school-based romcoms; besides that, each character is unbelievably distinct and likable, one way or another, which is the greatest of praise and attention any harem manga should get. With a harem, there is a ship to hop on and stay on, however, the characters have been so well-written and explored, while having impeccable chemistry and moments with the mc respectively, that I still have not decided to choose one girl, which is incredibly uncommon, since I usually go with the childhood friend ship out of pity.
I could go on and on about the characters, expanding on their realistic attributes, however, the manga also has some of the most heartfelt and dramatic moments incorporated into the plot line. Yes, sometimes the developments are forced, but for the most part, the manga is well-paced and reasonable, which creates such an engaging read; there’s some mystery and tons of cliffhangers that just leave the impression of “I want more.” No, “I need more” is a better phrase.
Bear with the first two chapters of a dramatic, dumpster fire of a read while laughing along the way, then the manga will reward some of the best fruits of progression from its art, pacing, and characters. Though it is somewhat cliche and predictable at times, this manga utilizes and controls each event well despite the answers already being known. For a romance drama-fest, this manga is the best you’d get.
PS: I’m not joking when I said I was conflicted about this score: whether it be in bed or during my classes, there was always a looming thought over my head on what to score this. Anyway, this is probably the only romance manga I will MTL the novel just to reach the end before the others, that’s how engaging it is.
On a side note, the kouhai is eerily similar to “Iroha” from “Oregairu,” and I’ve always hated how little screen time Iroha got due to her being by far my favorite option, so it’s no wonder why I loved this manga and can’t decide on a ship.
