Synopsis

Yuki Itose is a hearing-impaired university student whose world has been shrouded with silence since birth. She has lived in the same place her whole life, and rarely interacts with others save for her best friend, Rin Fujishiro. During her commute one day, she meets the silver-haired and multilingual Itsuomi Nagi, a mutual friend of Rin. Unlike most, Itsuomi is unwavering when he learns of Yuki's impairment; this, along with his experiences abroad, fascinates and touches her. After they part, her fondness of him starts to grow. A new world begins to open for both Yuki and Itsuomi as they learn about each other's different lives.

Yubisaki to Renren is a lighthearted, romantic comedy that illustrates the silent life of a university student and how one man sharing his world starts to change her own.

Background

Yubisaki to Renren ranked ninth and 17th in the 2021 and 2022 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! for the Female Readers division, respectively. The manga was nominated for the Kodansha Manga Award in the Shoujo category for four consecutive years from 2021 to 2024.

The series has been published digitally in English as A Sign of Affection by Kodansha Comics USA since March 31, 2020, and in print since February 23, 2021, and as 3-in-1 omnibus volumes since May 14, 2024. The series has also been simulpub through K Manga. It has also been released in Polish as by Studio JG since May 12, 2023.

This manga is NOT a shameless reworking of Koe no Katachi (A silent voice). Its also not the token use of a deaf person in order to create novelty within the romance trope.

The story revolves around Yuki, a young college woman who is hearing impaired. We are immediately brought into her world and her everyday experience and challenges with interacting with those around her. She encounters Itsuomi and is impressed with how he doesn't treat her differently. How he attempts to communicate with her and then later connects her with others and with the world around her.

This series is ... just okay. Very cute, but basic story with an uninteresting romance.

It's important to write and spread well-researched stories that have characters with disabilities in the forefront. I love how Yuki's deafness is explored and how she reacts to the world around her (and how others react to her in turn).

However, as a romance series, I find the romance extremely lacking. I don't think there is a lot of chemistry between Yuki and Itsuomi. I'm having difficulty thinking of interests they share or conversations between the two of them that wasn't about their relationship or feelings towards eachother. What I'm getting ...

This series is for sub girls. If you don't want a perfect fantasy tall pretty boy dom infantilizing his sub girl from day 1 all touchy-feely without consent like a pickup-artist while criticizing the same thing in simp childhood friend then this story isn't something you'll like. (This series is the sexual harassment vs flirting meme).
It infantilizes its deaf FMC in every way (she has never encountered anything outside Japan online, and the author depicts racist stereotypes in one of the few times when anything abroad is actually depicted).
