A fantasy story that's not isekai or have any overpowered characters? Is such a thing possible? Well, here you got an example. No spoilers, by the way.
The story starts well after the heroic stage of the main character has ended. Once he is old and battered by the life he has lived, decides to travel to find his final resting place.
For those fearing an extremely introspective manga, like I was before I read it, I can say, do not worry. It explores plenty of action scenes (To be honest, I was surprised, I expected a cooking fantasy manga).
The story is quite well

First I would like to excuse my self for any mistake I will make while writing my review because I am not enough skilled in English to write like in my native tong. To begin with this is an absolute work of art. I don't recall a time that I got more affected by a manga/anime. I have watched/read countless anime/manga during the last 10 years of my life. To explain my point of view I would like to describe all the emotion I experience during the wonderful time I passed reading this masterpiece. It came first with a light naive joy from the first

Most men of Bar Loen’s age would recognize the bitter sweetness of surviving friends and foes alike. And with age comes realisations of choices made; what could have been and what became.
The creaking of joint and morning body pain all speaks of a end coming closer every day. Yet the knight also recognizes it’s not so much what we have, as what we leave behind, doing good here&now has its own merits in the future afterlife. The story is good and art great. I am of same age as mr Loen, with similar and worse ailments and I highly recommend men of that age to read ... Jun 23, 2024
"Henkyou no Roukishi Bard Loen" is a manga that leaves me wondering whether it is brilliant or "just" extremely good.
Bard Loen is the knight of the people, as he once swore his oath for the people. For several decades, he has faithfully served a special noble family that protects humanity from demonic beasts. But other families try to use the knight, who became a local hero because of his oath and dozens of deeds, as a reason to undermine his noble family. So Bard decides to pack his things and go on a journey, just as he once planned to do with his mistress when ... May 18, 2022
Wow. This has to be one of my Top 3 fantasy mangas of all time. It's actually incredible how underrated this manga is. Even with only 29 chapters this story already presented me with extremely likeable characters, GREAT art, fantastic worldbuilding and extremely engaging story. Each of those I will discuss. Spoilers ahead.
First the art. The only part of it I think is not perfect like everything else. But even then it's like 9.4 to me. I think I only bring it down a bit because of two things. First being the chibi faces Bard sometimes has along with other characters, they show up a ... Jan 15, 2025
Very solid Fantasy manga that is strongly reminiscent of Sousou no Frieren, and in some ways this is superior. There's slowburn worldbuilding, much of the action is slow slice of life and while there are background conflicts (that the protagonist is reluctantly drawn into), the main driver are the characters and their transformations.
Another fantasy that it has some similarities to is Dungeon Meshi, though this is more grounded. The manga shares the same obsessions with food (and makes you care, even though you will never be able to eat any of these dishes), and details. When the main character gets the skin of a monster, ... |
