Nagoya TV pointed out an inappropriate expression in the episode 8 of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2 aired on May 27th. They probably meant one of Kyon's lines "(The park is a) Mecca of odd fellows". The line was left uncensored to respect the original work. Source: Screenshot of episode 8 Translation of the annotation: This work contains an inappropriate expression, but we aired as it is to respect the original work. |

They didn't specify which expression was inappropriate. so they might think "Haruhi and Kyon entered the school without permission" or "leaving graffiti on the playground" were also inappropriate. At least, "Mecca of ~" expression is considered to be politically incorrect by Japanese TV companies. |

hmmm is it because maybe they have so many 'Meccas' that they aren't openly proud of... they deem the expression politically incorrect? |

That's interesting, in the US we say "mecca of ____" or "____ mecca" without thinking of it at all. Like, shopping meccas, to refer to huge malls. But the idea that they would find it so politically incorrect that they need a disclaimer... :/ |

@Td99 oh thanks for giving a precious opinion. "Mecca of ~" is also a common phrase in Japan, but it's considered to be inappropriate for public broadcasting. so even if "Mecca of ~" expression is used in a negative context (in this case "odd fellows"), it doesn't matter to you? As for JoJo's case, it's anime producers' fault. but there was an argument from Japanese JoJo fans that the viewers of illegal fansubs don't have right to complain about the anime. |

Why is it that any little thing to do with Muslims is considered offense but no one gives a f**k about other religions? Because no one wants to be suicide bombed. Sorry if any Muslims consider that offensive but it's the truth. Like in the UK so many Cristian nurses or teachers are being struck off just for wearing crucifix or expressing their Cristian beliefs (praying), yet a Muslim girl was able to complain to her school board for not being allowed to wear a hijab. I'm a Cristian myself and it's shit like this that really grinds my gears. Heck, all of Hellsing and various other anime would be considered offensive but I don't give a shit cause it all done within the realms of entertainment. |

I'm a muslim and I'd hardly call saying "Mecca of x" as offensive. In the UK there's a huge chain of bingo halls called "Mecca Bingo" (gambling is something not favoured upon in Islam) )but nobody seems to be getting angry or bombing them. If you look up "mecca" in a dictionary it will tell you its "A place that is regarded as the center of an activity or interest." Sure there is a place sacred to Muslims called Mecca(or Makkah) but its also a commonly used word that describes something, I've never heard of anyone ever getting angry over calling something a "mecca". In the episode given the context I'd hardly say it was being politicaly incorect when its just using a commonly known word or phrase. |

makube-x said: But it wasn't even meant to be offensive. It just means a large group of people and I doubt the old fellows referred to anything remotely to do with the muslim faith.well i am a Muslim and knowing that Mecca was used in a negative way does sound offending to me and others. Some people need to get over this and realise we don't always share the same beliefs, if it's not said with intent to offend then it shouldn't be blown out of proportion. |

makube-x said: well i am a Muslim and knowing that Mecca was used in a negative way does sound offending to me and others. But anime producers should really consider that there are people out there who are not as easy going as some of us, also i dont think that using Mecca here was the best choice. the producers should have checked and searched about it in google or wiki before unintentionally offending people. . But they never used 'Mecca' as in the city, it was 'mecca' where the word means a place of interest where people gather. There are two definitions of the words, given the context of the episode where nothing Islamic was being talked about it really obvious which definition of the word was being used. Really, I'm not even sure why dtshyk mentioned Muslims in this thread, he just created a huge argument. The TV station did not mention what the offensive words were in the episode nor did any website, it was just dtshyk jumping to conclusions in order to confuse the readers and cause a shitstorm. Yet again. |

@Kraker2k Mecca on Japanese Wikipedia said: Mecca is commonly used for a metaphor of "center of activity" or "admired place", but Muslims and Saudi Arabian govenment don't like such expressions. In a live program aired on TV Asahi, a narrator apologized for using an inappropriate expression "Roppongi, Mecca of traffic jam". oh well, it's rather correct to say "Japanese think Muslims and Saudi Arabian government don't like such expressions." TV Nagoya could mean some other lines by "inappropriate expression" but 2ch Haruhi thread people reached a conclusion that "Mecca" caused the trouble. "Haruhi entered the school without permission" and "Drawing graffiti" can be inappropriate but then TV companies would have to put such apology annotations to every program with unlawful scenes. Moreover, "inappropriate expression" in broadcasting usually implies a discriminative term. so I would say Mecca is the most likely candidate. 8:33 - 8:34 Kawarimono (odd people) no Mecca nanoka? |

I dont really give a damn fuck about the hijab thing since it really is a trivial thing, it's a choice whether to dress it or not. But some really brainless Muslims regard this issue as the the most important thing in the world. And the way you put on the hijab is mostly a political sign more than a religious one, at least in my country. So i loathe it from the very depths of my heart. I, as a Muslim, know what is entertainment and what is not, and i just laugh it out whenever i see anything related to religion on shows and i really mean it. What i'm trying to say is, you dont have the right to blame all the people for the things that a bunch of people do. There are lots and lots of narrow minded people in every religion and this kind of things will occur all over again for sure. |

In entertainment and in humour nothing is sacred, there are lines that shouldn't be crossed, but political correctness can politely go and fuck itself. This as with many other instances is an example of over sensitive faggotry and tiptoeing around issues that shouldn't be issues. And that's all I've got to say about that. |

This is not that big of a deal and the Muslims should not find the use of the word "mecca" offensive. It makes sense to me that since they have already offended the Muslims once, they are taking every precaution not to do it again. Face it, this could just have easily happened here in North America. All it takes is one ignorant publisher/producer and "some fancy looking Arabic words" and voila, instant controversy. We can't really criticize the Japanese for issuing that disclaimer simply because we have more experience with Muslims and thus already know that using the word "mecca" is not offensive to them. And to those who think that it's only the Muslims who react this way don't know much. Anyone else notice Viz's altering of Greed's "crucifixion" scene in the FMA manga? We take plenty of offense to Japanese media too. |

Heck, all of Hellsing and various other anime would be considered offensive but I don't give a shit cause it all done within the realms of entertainment. Because Christians *never* protest depictions of their religion.. Considering the vast number of Muslims, the extreme ones are a tiny minority. Really, if the violence perpetrated by both was given equal airtime, it would probably be a close match. Laugh all you want at different Islamic sects arguing with each other, but go to Ireland and see/hear about the devastation that has happened as a result of violence between the Catholics and the Protestants. Or the bombing of abortion clinics (see: the death of Gunn). Or the many nationalist/fascist groups that justify themselves using Christianity (see: Russian National Unity, Lord's Resistance Army, Klu Klux Klan). And before someone says that these people are "not real Christians", realize that Muslims are just as entitled to say exactly the same thing about the radicals in their religion. And believe it or not, there are factors well beyond religion that factor into the conflicts in the middle east (*cough* blowback from US foreign policy *cough*). |
