well.. it had to end somehow..lovers united and became one with the giant spiral. i like the idea of the continuous cycle of the town's history. at least the dad and mom got back together in the end, yes? and lol, wtf. the spiral closed without the little brother? LOL. that sucks :P

consistently good stuff overall. 9/10 even, imo.

I guess that means he escaped the spiral? Or he could be found a few years later and be named as a new species of giant snails.

Poor Mitsuo. Kirie said she'd come back for him but she never can.

Is she dead or alive? She's "frozen in time" or something, until the spiral awakens again. Or something like that.

And I didn't get one part - as they're walking through the row house spiral they have to go through the row house at one point. As they do, Chie suddenly gets caught in the woodwork, which begins to stand up on its own (?). And then she gets trapped in there. I was like "what?" Did the ugly spiral people trap her or what?

Then after that suddenly all the row houses are empty. Huh?

I guess it's just Uzumaki~

I don't believe so. It was something on the line of no one every makes it out alive to tell the world what happened. I'm pretty sure I read in the manga somewhere about the town being sealed off for a century so that the outsiders would forget the incident and move back into town so the whole process could repeat itself.

It doesn't make sense at all why the town citizens didn't leave at all. All of this happened over a long time. The mangaka didn't explain why the spiral even forms. It made me feel like I wasted my time reading this pointless story.

I really, really, really disliked this ending. I really wanted Shuichi and Kirie to get out together, I loved both characters (especially Shuichi) and to see that they basically give up and die -- no matter how "romantic" the basis of it is -- really bothered me. Sigh. I thought the manga was going somewhere better than this. :<

I also liked the way it ended. I thought it was bittersweet that they had to face death, but who better to face it with than the one you love, you know?

In mythology as well as my nature-based faith, the spiral symbolizes death. Yet it's easy to forget that it's part of a cycle of death then life (if you believe in reincarnation). The entire city went back to the Earth from which they came and the cycle will begin again in umpty-hundred years, which is an interesting thought.

A lot of people like clear-cut, explainable endings. I like the fact that the mangaku left it up to the reader to feel the ending as they wish. Although this was definitely a horror manga, it seems that the ending wasn't nearly as horrific as it could have been, especially considering that whole bit with the babies and the "mushrooms". *shivers in disgust*

So that's my take on it. I liked it and thought it was somewhat sweet that the lovers die within the spirals.

My first thoughts when I saw Kirie and Shuichi hug... YAY! They turned into a n evil crazy Sea Snake!!! XD So why were that Spiral ruins.. or even that Spiral twon... or Spiral stairs build for? Who knows... the Mangaka never told us why they were built.... But one think is for sure... just as hazumuchan pinted out... It pretty much symbolizes the cycle of Life and Death.... Can mean something else... like we have space as much as the spiral can give us... In fact that's pretty much the reason why the Row Houses were built the way they were... But definitely the weirdst place out of everywhere was DragonFly Pond.... a pond... with endless water... yeah sure...

The ending was romantic... maybe not the bet... but it somehow makes it original... I liked the Underground Spiral City.. if someone offered me a space inside it I'd love to take it hahahaha... That big eye like the Lighthouse Light was amazingly stunning... I loved that double spread....

Oh, well, that's a weird manga.
I know it doesn't explain anything at all and lacks totally of common sense, but I liked it some way. I think if the author try to explain, would just mess up even more, you know? Because nothing makes sense, like, snail people, c'mon! But is creepy and interesting in a really weird way.

I don't think I wasted my time reading, has some good stories, if you analyse it one by one. The end is not terrible too, I totally wanted Kirie and Suichi out of the town (they survived until now, they could make it somehow...), but I liked both died together (that hug was the best part, wish it was a full-page image).

So, I will give 8/10, because it made me laugh and feel disgusted at the same time, has a incredible art (man, those spirals are cool) and it made me dream with cannibal schoolmates when I read it before going to sleep.

I know it's not like me to get angry over something like this but... What the literal fuck?! I loved the manga, it was amazing, but an explanation would have been nice, and the ending was romantic and wonderful and all... but... Ugh. Forget it. Over all it was a really great manga, despite the ending.

It's been a while since I've read this, but wasn't the point that they couldn't leave? Everyone gets caught up in the inescapable and infinite nature of the spiral, which twists space and time. In the end, everything spirals towards death and horror, the center. I didn't feel an explanation for the origin of the spiral was needed at the time I read it. Because of its theme, the ending was a perfectly logical conclusion, as it takes place in a world ruled by the spiral (including time and space). Of course, if you are not a fan of the metaphoric and open endings, this one was indeed horrible. Personally, I loved the ending.

Plus, if nothing else, it was hilarious.

Nah, I stopped caring for an explanation when all the premise went way too surreal, just like with Gyo. Personally, Junji Itou should be labeled as a mastermind in supernatural stories instead of horror ones, since most of his chapters were more bizarre and/or laughable than frightening actually.
I probably think this way as I started reading Uzumaki short after Ibitsu, when the latter really made me shiver like hell... O_O
Overall, it was a weird read, but nothing that made me want to have my time spent on it back. At least I admit the author sure have guts to come up with such oddities.

They couldn't leave the town. The few complainers in here didn't pay attention. Although the characters were stupid not to try and leave right from the beginning.

Agreed. Yep they cannot leave.

About the ending though I don't get it either. I wish there was more meaning to the spirals because the manga felt like an abrupt ending even tho the two characters reunited.

If the people here complain about the ending they should read some of other works Ito Junji has done, they all have a episodic feeling to them and never really get a explanation, more like a urban legend but they all work

C'mon, some things cannot be explained. Let's leave it that way.

Anyway, as for the ending, I thought it was fine. I was actually expecting a more gruesome one like Shuichi being a snail man and got eaten by those freaks but nah, the two of them had to be together I guess. (excuse that, I wasn't very fond of Shuichi and all his mumblings).

How were we supposed to get more information? Have the characters stumble on some Ancient Manuscript detailing all the Dark Secrets? Please...for one, you have to understand this is inspired largely by lovecraft's works. Whatever the spiral is was beyond human understanding, so we were never going to get answers. There never were answers. I personally thought it was brilliant...the story itself was a spiral.

It stopped being horror after Whirlwind Wars. Horror SHOULD have some explanation, otherwise it's really not as scary. In this case, we see it kind of just remained stupid.

I also really liked the ending. The mysteries are a big thing to bear, and is quite bothering, though. The structures have that futuristic and mechanical feel to it, and that showed clearly at the ending. It hints that aliens built it. But, I thought Shuichi or Kiries ancestors, shamans, casted a curse over the city, and that it would have some kind of magical ending where Shuichi would have to perform a sacrifice to save her and the city.
It's bothering me, that this will happen indefinitely and forever. I guess not, Uzumaki! I'm dying to see the curse trying to bugger the humans from thousands of years in the future, with their cosmic weapons and ultra intelligence. So it's a fake Uzumaki, ha! Take this name, sucker, you deserve it. This city went through hell.
The position Shuichi and kirie ended at is very "romantic".

I didn't really care we got no answers, I'm perfectly fine with a unknown evil haunting the town. However, it took way long for the characters to finally attempt an escape and find out they can't. Too many chapters before that I kept wondering why these people are so dumb for sticking around and shortly after half way some of it just felt goofy. It's still fairly creepy with some fine unique and grotesque art so it wasn't a complete waste of time to me.

So did Shuichi and Kirie die at the end? Or could they escape out of it? I didn't quite get the ending, it was more like an open end...damn. This whole story is so disturbing. I still would like to know WHO made those spirals or HOW they got there. And why no one of the citizens tried to escape at the beginning of the incidents. I mean I wouldn't be staying there if weird things were happening. And it's also disturbing that no one knows about that curse and that it was forgotten over the centuries.

Not all horror stories or phenomena require an explanation, but I would have enjoyed a bit more clarity.

Shuichi mentions how the spiral hypnotizes and craves attention. That certainly explains why they're inexplicably pulled towards the insanity.

Aw, I kinda hoped they both would survive, but when they started to go down those stairs I knew they weren't coming back up anymore. I really liked Shuichi so it was a shame seeing him go down like that. If he only had left right from the start..

Overall not the scariest thing out there, but surely creepy and messed up. I felt so bad for the snail people.. At least Mitsuo got out..? Probably. Although it's sad Kirie can never go back to find him like she promised.

And I'm not annoyed by the "unexplained" ending, I think we got quite good explanation even though some things were left unknown. I feel like most of the people complaining about it, didn't pay enough attention, or can't use their imagination.

I'll be definitely checking out more Junji Ito's work.

Pretty interesting horror with a slight bittersweetness ending. So the ending sums up the title of uzumaki's never ending curse. Town build on top of core spiral, bewitch and curse the people living there, turns them into stones/ruins at the bottom which maybe explains why the core "felt like it has a life of it's own", closing the entrance by itself and await for new lives to live above it.

7/10 creepy.

The ending was just perfect for me.. The spiral, noone knows why it forms or how, all some of them knew is that it slowly drives you mad and finaly kills you. The misteries around the spiral is what makes it interesting and how some of the people had a chance to choose how to die like the main characters, they died embrasing each other, for a horror manga this is kind of warming end..
