THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Did you manage to follow the story going on the roller coaster? I barely did by complementing the background from my knowledge of the novel. I don't feel any sophistication from the organiztion of the series.

Yea, I got the gist of the plot. But, after reading your notes it's all much clearer. Wow, they did leave out alot of the details, and most would have really enhanced the sory line. I still want to enjoy the anime as much as I can.

oh that's good you got the plot.
Editing out some details are inevitable, but their manner of connecting the fragments of the stories are poorly done and unnatural. It was a climax of this chapter where Shibasaki wondered whether she should accept Asahina's offer. The scene Shibasaki hugged Kasahara should have been more touching if they had described her distress deeply.

Thank you as always dtshyk for your explanations ;)

I already understood most of the plot without your info and it was a very good episode for me even though it could have been better with some more background work and time (like two episodes instead of one). Once again I believe that the main weakness of this show is that it is only 12 episodes, I think that it would have deserved a full season. That's a shame because the ratings of this show are very good from what I have seen (top3 of this season), far better than those of Code Geass for example...

Did anyone notice Kasahara and Tezuka helped that bastard move several cart fulls of books without questioning why he was moving them? Ya, I don't think they realized it either and now that Kasahara is being called in for questioning it's going to get sticky when she finds out those carts where probably full of the books that where burned. She will of course confess that she helped move the carts since shes a good person but it will be hard to convince them that she had no idea about what was going on.

Should become interesting.

PS. why was he burning books in the first place? I thought he was apart of Tezuka's brother's group. Why would they be burning books? If thats their goal of stopping war isn't that the same as what the enemy has been doing? I don't see how its any different different.

You got a good point. I hope they will show the secrets of the conspiracy well in the next episode. (If not, then I will post supplementary info again...)

wow, so far the series has been taking its sweet time and now they decide to go full throttle. going a bit too fast there with all the sudden plotlines--and the appearance of the evil mastermind--compared to the previous episodes but still one of the best series this season.

Good episode as always, but reading the supplementary information makes me wish they'd given a bit more explanations in the anime itself. 12 episodes only is definitely too short.

Oh, and Tezuka's watch looked a bit like a skull to me. Freaky!

Hi all, I'm new to this site and therefore new to these discussions as well...

I didn't have any trouble following the story, really, but thank you dtshyk for providing us with all these additional info, it's much appreciated, and it makes me want to read the book! All in all I'm really in love with these series... 12 episodes is far too short!

DeathFireD - that's indeed a good point you're making here... I'm curious to see how it goes in the next episode.

Now, for something completely trivial and unrelated: is it me, or does Shibasaki wear different glasses in every episode?

Toshokan Sensou is collaborating with a glasses shop "Zoff" and Shibasaki wears their new product in every episode. Zoff also runs a cafe and they provide a special Camomile tea (camomile is the symbol of the Library Forces) while Toshokan Sensou is being aired.

I see... now that's a fun way to place product advertisement! Nice modelling on Shibasaki's part... although I wonder what the Toshotai administration might have to say regarding taking side jobs. ;)

About the camomile, is there any explanation in the novel as to why it was chosen as the symbol for the Toshotai? It's been puzzling me since ep.1...

There is a touching reason why camomile was chosen. I believe they will explain it in the anime, too.

He was burning books because he is an ignorant bastard who needs to die a thousand painful deaths including crucifixion, suffication, and being burned at the stake.

Haha! I would second that... but somehow, I don't know that he's smart and/or evil enough to warrant deserving such punishment. When people are stupid... well, they're just that. Stupid.
But I would generally agree that people putting together autodafés deserve being burned at the stake themselves.

I'm not sure whether it was Sunagawa's idea to burn the books or if Satoshi simply let him believe it was his idea, but I think that for Satoshi the main concern was whether or not the incident was exposed to the public and who would take the fall, as you'll see in the next ep. He wanted to instigate this bad publicity for his own ends. (I hope that's not a spoiler.) Anyway, it was interesting to learn about the different factions in the libraries.

Thanks dtshyk for the info. This episode really did feel like us, non-book readers, are missing a whole bunch of background knowledge.

Though, I'm still not too sure how Shibasaki knew that Kasahara would be seen as an accomplice. Did Kasahara tell her and she somehow managed to put two and two together? It felt like we missed a scene.

Poor little Kasahara is about to get torn to shreds . . . Though doubt the interrogation committee will get anywhere with someone as straightforward as her.

Now the amount of plotholes took me by surprise for this episode - one can see that I.G is all out in rushing this series. Nevertheless, we can see that Satoshi, Hikaru's brother, takes upon an alternative approach to counter censorship, which is to first get rid of militant action between the two main parties.

While his modus operandi is still unknown as of now, we know that it might be that Satoshi made use of the dumbass to burn books in order to get rid of his main opposition - the Library, by exposing the scandal to light. The bastard is most likely unaware of such, maybe he just burnt them because he hated them simply (as hinted in the amount of hates showin in his reviews.) Personal conjecture here, as the jury is still out on this.

4/5 for counter-subterfuge Shibasaki! :D

P/S: Awkward comedy scene at the end though.

Kasahara and Tezuka were subtly helping Sunagawa move some books in the middle of the episode, non-chalantly, who figured that would be a motive for the cliffhanger as Kasahara is accused of being Sunagawa's accomplice in the burning of books, which is illegal there, especially considering her job. Hikaru Tezuka's brother is something else, and definitely influenced Sunagawa into getting into shit like this. Dojo knew that the report was full of shit and got angry about hearing the blasphemy but doesn't change the fact that Kasahara is going to have to go through some serious interrogation in the next episode, poor guy and poor Kasahara. Good episode.

Oh no, Kasahara was getting framed. That's why you shouldn't help anyone without asking first.
A little backstory about Tezuka's family, but sadly not a wholesome one. looking forward for them to talk about it more, maybe in the next episode?
