What to do now that he's caught... You know, I kinda get where his mom's coming from, like she dosen't want her kid to be the odd one out and be bullied for liking girly stuff and not being like the other kids, but let the kid do what he wants you hag. Dad on the other hand is the perfect example of a you know, A GOOD AND SUPPORTING PARENT.... ffs. Old had over her has mental issues and needs therapy non-ironically... Don't care is she's "wEaK". Props to dad's friend that works the school as well. Crazy how someone who doesn't one know the boy is more supportive than the person who birthed him... Then Makoto starts not cross dressing and asks out Saki and wants to use her... USE her... like dude your no better than your mom now, trying to use Saki to make it look like a "normal" relationship... Dude just doesn't understand the concept of being himself ig... because he legit says" goodbye ME".. If you like your comfortable like that, it's because you want and feel like it's right to be like that. Won't blame him too much on that because we live in a society where women can dress as men, but not men dress as women. Whatever though, everything went back to normal in the end, and we're right back where we started. Sure, you got Saki to accept you again, but what about your mom... |

It is the foreshadow of the real final chapter, which is chapter 100 (it was actually the first draft of series finale of the Webtoon). That ending song, is based of Aoi Saki and Hanaoka Makoto after Chapter 100 of the Webtoon. Yeah, hopefully Fuji TV has a fair schedules on this Olympics from Paris, France, considering episode 4 next week might be the last normal coverage in Noitamina this season due to their position as the official broadcaster of Paris 2024 Olympics Games too. |

Wow, where to start. Long write up coming. First half of this episode was very hard to watch. Makoto’s mom is the exact type of parent anyone struggling with their sexual identity or gender does NOT want to have. She’s so backwards and trapped in her narrow way of thinking that she doesn’t even realise the living hell she’s made her own child’s life. “Are you still into girly things” ok and if he is?? Maybe support your son and respect who he is rather than put all this pressure to hide himself?? “Don’t put me in a tough situation”??? Bit rich coming from someone putting you in the toughest possible position as a child. Feeling like you can’t even be yourself around the one person who through it all is supposed to love you more than anyone is such a horrible feeling. Her criticisms are all about her and how Makoto’s behaviour makes HER feel rather than him. I hate selfish parents so much. Like when she first discovered Makoto’s passion, her first reaction isn’t even to understand Makoto and the crossdressing thing. Instead she calls him “twisted” and attacking his lifestyle. Sadly, this is an all too real representation of East Asian, particularly Japanese culture in which the belief that “the nail that sticks out gets hammered down” is still dominant. At least ONE of his parents is understanding and sympathetic. Usually dads are the ones with the masculinity and machismo stuff, but Makoto’s father is the nice one lmao. I really respect him asking Makoto what he wants to identify and even finding a school Makoto could go to that allows him to dress as he wants. That explains why no one at school really bats an eye about it. Just horrible they have to hide all this from the mother. The build up to and first half of the dance just made me feel really bad because it’s so obvious Makoto felt out of place and uncomfortable. Going two weeks without being able to be himself breaks my heart. That “goodbye me” scene with him throwing all the nice clothes he got when going shopping last episode hurt a lot. Like cmon, Makoto’s more interested in his date’s wig than her 😭 why would anyone force him to live this way when it’s not who he is. Aoi is so pure and deserves the world for how she didn’t stop trying to get to the bottom of things and ran after the garbage truck to get Makoto’s stuff back. She might be a lil slow but she’s got a heart of gold and is the perfect friend for Makoto. Their dance scene at the end was soooo cute. Fuck Gender norms. Makoto looks beautiful in a dress and Aoi looks great in a suit! Can’t wait for next episode and the OP is for sure my OP of the season. So damn good it’s been on repeat for two weeks now and is a proper summer bop. |

This episode was so real... Him being found out, his mon's terrible reaction... He almost killed his entire personnality to fit her world's view in spite of having supporting friends. Even his dad got him to be able to do as he wanted at school... But sometimes the wrong person not being supportive is enough to destroy you mentally. I guess he'll have to live a lie at home again until he leaves his mom behind without looking back (she'd totally deserve it and more). |

amazing episode. i loved the parallel at the end of makoto jumping over the ledge and flying above aoi (compared to episode 1 when aoi jumped down from the tree for makoto) aoi is the best character in this anime by far, although i do love all 3. her earnest, dedicated, and bubbly personality brings her to the top of my list. chasing down the garbage truck is such an insane thing to do, and only someone of her caliber would go that far. it's easy to buy a new pair of shoes or bring makoto something else cute that he'd enjoy, but she wanted to bring him the exact thing that put a smile on his face in the first place. absolutely adorable |

So, it never got brought up that the handkerchief was hidden under the mattress, but the mother is desperate to delude herself into thinking he's normal. I was also wondering why no one else had a face, and while the budget here is practically nonexistent, I'm guessing that was supposed to highlight how differently everyone else treats Makoto when he dresses like a typical high school boy, but they're "fake" in that regard. Well, props to the girl who was his semi-date for letting him borrow her wig just like that. The middle part was a bit rough to watch, but the ending was really heartwarming, Aoi saved the high heels and gave him the dress right off her back, absolute W. |

Real question, please spoil it for me if you must, but does the mom ever come around in the story?? I'm so close to dropping this anime because it's legitimately triggering me. I'm non binary myself and my gender dysphoria is too strong for this. That anime woman is legitimately pissing me off so bad I almost feel like I don't wanna watch it anymore |

@sotheby Shape of Love, in its English title. The Japanese title itself is literally translated as "Is This A Love Itself?" The song is more Aoi Saki-centric compared to the OP which is Hanaoka Makoto-centric. Yeah, nice song for the introduction to Saki's arc. |

oof, heavy episode, with a good ending tho his mother's behavior is one sure way of traumatizing your child for life... no matter how 'odd' your child may be that's no way to treat them... thankfully the dad is an understanding parent and that helped poor Makoto feel a little reassured, otherwise I would've feared for his psyche the way his mother is treating him... and Ryuji might've been acting cool and all but I'm sure he was yearning for the girly Makoto to come back ;) |

Dang Makoto really snapped there for a minute. I get his mom having traditional values or whatever but if it makes your kid happy and it isn't hurting anyone who tf cares. I guess she's too worried about her own reputation than Makoto's happiness, possibly. His dad is a badass for real though for doing that for him. Long hair and suit Makoto is hot, and suit Aoi is adorable. Would love to see their crossdressing wedding |

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! SO GOOD!! The soundtrack is just, *muah* and the use of clarinet? So absolutely perfect! I do feel like the serious bits don't stay serious for long enough, but honestly it's been so long since I read the manga, so they might've done it the same there too. Either way, no complaints from me! Also, what time do these episodes actually air? Because it's certainly not at the time that it says here on MAL, unless that's strictly the time that they air in Japan on TV and we have to wait for the episodes to actually come online. |

I think one reason the way his mom acts is extra painful to watch other than his mom simply not being accepting is that she weaponizes her emotions and tears to manipulate him into conforming to her standard. As if who he is HURTS HER. In reality it isn’t about her. None of it is about her and her reactions are so selfish. She doesn’t think about Makoto or his feelings or the self hate she is instilling in him. On the opposite end, I really loved Aoi in this episode. She is selfless and kind. I cried a little when she went chasing after the garbage truck. |

I love Makoto’s dad, is a diamond of person. I love Aoi, says what she thinks and is so supportive. Wish I have someone like her I love Ryuji, always accepted what makoto was and is. I love Makoto, because even though he likes cute things he was in disposition of leaving that to don’t hurt her mom, but then noticing that he can like what he want and don’t need the approval of others to be happy. (This is embarrassing but I couldn’t stop crying the whole episode. PD: I love this pacing) |

Cool epiosde. The mom keeps being ill for no reason, I wished they at least showed a scene of the other moms making fun of her but no, not even that, she is just cartoonishly evil (in a sense we don't really explore her reasoning for being so opposed I mean, it would be great if she would even say "I don't like you wearing these stuff" but she doesn't even do that, it's like she collapses mentally and physically if Makoto isn't a boy lol, she's just hysterical, even blaming Makoto for "troubling her"). But it's not all lost...because the dad is an actual chad somehow, he didn't even ask "you like girl stuff" he read all the LGTB stuff and legit ask "you want to BE a girl?" which I feel is a little more complicated question for Makoto. And it's amazing how it made sense, that he shows him this school where he can crossdress, and that makes so much sense, that the teachers do tell the parents but just the dad then, and the why he gets to have that room to change, I thought it was too convenient otherwise, him having the dad's support is huge. Sad that he said "I'll take care of mom" but he wasn't able to do this, his only L honestly, because it's not a small thing, even if he supports him, the backlash of the negative reaction of the mom is stronger than the father's support in a way. I had to check the episode number, cause I'm like "there's no way this is episode 4, it's going so fast" and I was right, it was episode 3...wtf. I swear I've no idea what's in store for the other 9 episodes, I'm guessing we might even have him explore what he's into by having 2 potential love interests then, and plenty of episodes to see how he deals with this too (or maybe not, I'm just brainstorming). Sad that all 3 of them can't be some sort of family, like we always see in fucking harem anime, why would this be weirder. I really like the whole debate he had, after his mom psychologically forced him to stop crossdressing. He was like "maybe I could be 'normal', it surely has its perks, I don't have to hide all the time, mom won't freak out, my classmates and teachers treat me nice, I can even date Aoi, that's what normal boys do right? date girls?", he really thought about it. I'll probably be burned for this take I'm gonna say but here it goes: I think he should have kept doing that, I think he should have kept this going for 2 years, and when he goes to college, he can have more freedom, be with Aoi without pretending, since she supports what he likes, and he can have some more freedom since he's definitely not having that at home. Like he clearly didn't care about crossdressing in school, he knows that's what he wants to do. He knows he will get some shit for it, but he can handle it, the only thing he can't handle is the mom. He can pretend his 2nd and 3rd year so that she doesn't keep her neurotic behavior. And then, I don't know, the dad can just rent something for him when he goes to college and he can have all the dresses he wants there, and invite Aoi over and shit. My only concern would be that he still needs to practice going outside in women's clothes, since he clearly didn't do that shit so much, and he got scared at first, Aoi can totally helped him with that. But yeah, the mom will then learn, that he's out of his reach now, and the only way she gets to get some contact with her son, is if she leaves all this bullshit behind, otherwise she can keep having a panic attack but without being near the child, the dad said he'd handle it so, pay her teraphy or something I don't know |

Makoto's father is such a based chad father. Supporting his gay son! Her mother, meanwhile,is such a homophobe! "Why did I buy all these, when I'm a boy?", is such a relatable line. I bought all the girly stuff before, even though I'm a boy. I regret having my money wasted on such things. Aoi really desperate for Hanaoka. I hope they will be married until death. Also, I'm glad Hanaoka is realizing again what he is and what he likes and what he wants. I hope the time will come where his mom will come to accept who Hanaoka as a person is. I'm so glad Aoi was able to recover the garbage bag containing Hanaoka's crossdress stuff. |

Am I the only one who thinks Makoto isn't just a 'crossdresser' like the anime is described to be? I think she shows some various hints that she's trans and not just crossdressing. Yes, she says shes a "boy" but is she really? When she gets to choose the gender she gets to present at school in an environment where she doesn't get pressured by her mum to be a 'normal boy' she chooses to be a girl, and no I don't mean that trans people can choose whatever gender they are at the moment but for Makoto there's been so many flags raised for her to be a transgirl. She shows most comfort when she sees herself as a girl and able to dress as she pleases, so is she really just 'a boy who likes cute things'? |

really not a huge fan of how rushed this shit feels :// i feel like everything had a heavier impact in the webcomic. i'm kind of getting the vibe they're going to attempt to adapt all 100 chapters which would be insane for 12 episodes. as far as actual content goes, this episode is my least favourite so far, which really sucks because i loved the scene where they dance on the beach in the comic :( things just felt especially cheap in this one. still can't bring myself to like the endless chibi segments/stillframes. definitely just gonna wind up rereading after this finishes airing. |

@arlori this is a very controversial topic online, but i agree with you. no cis person wants to be a girl this bad, lol. if you're okay with spoilers- it's left kiiiiind of ambiguous by the end of the series, with makoto claiming they aren't really either gender, but still referring to themselves as a boy. imo, they're non-binary or something adjacent to that. |

@arlori Hanaoka Makoto, I think he is really born a boy biologically, but has a female soul inside. If you know more about the Far Eastern civilizations, there are a lot of men who are like this, and vice versa. That's why, we lacks gender-based pronouns here. What makes Makoto's mother angry is related to the past of her, compared to understanding Makoto's mother as radical heterosexualist. Please, read also the Webtoon, it will change your life entirely. |

@yoroshikus He doesn't want to be a girl, he likes cute things and dressing up. He isn't non-binary and he isn't trans. I wont give any spoilers since we're talking about the anime here but I will say it's dreadfully ironic that this anime has attracted so many people who insist Makoto must be trans or non-binary just because of the things he likes when that goes against the whole message of the series; it's no different than Makoto's mother insisting he likes masculine things because he's a guy. |

@Lay1306 Trans man here. I don't know the answer to your question about the mom, but I can tell you that my real mom was like that back when I was in high school. It wasn't as bad for me as it would have been for an AMAB kid, because societal norms are weird like that. Still, the episode brought up a ton of old pain for me. I totally hear you about it being triggering, and _especially_ if you're still in an unsupportive living situation, you need to take care of you, however you need to. For me, though, even though it hurts to remember, it's still very healing to see fiction like this. It's also wildly healing to see how many viewers are angry with that character for treating her child that way. Back when I was in high school, I don't think there would have been this much support for Makoto in the comments, and I'm sincerely moved to see that despite all the problems in the world, some things are improving, bit by bit. It almost feels like people are coming to the defense of my younger self when I see how intensely they disapprove of the mom's behavior. If the show is too much for where your life is right now, do what's healthy for you. I just thought it might help a little to know that you're not the only one triggered, and that the world has gotten better since when I was a teen. I hope it continues to do so, for us and for those who come after. |

@arlori I'm currently accepting his male identification choice and assuming he's non-binary. Like Suzy Eddie Izzard or Jonathan Van Ness. They both started out as femmy men and wandered more and more nonbinary over their careers, and Suzy especially seems to get trans-er and femme-er every time I check back in on her journey, but, like, that doesn't necessarily erase the old identities. It just means that people evolve through their lives. Makoto may end up full femme one day, but I don't think he's lying when he says he currently identifies as a boy. Not like he was lying when he tried to pretend he was gender conforming. Back when I was still trying with everything I had to figure out how to be a girl (I'm AFAB), I would have been delighted if someone had acknowledged me as maaaybe being a trans guy, so I know you're being sweet here and I appreciate you, but I also would have been annoyed if people had started calling me he/him before I was ready. Plus it's completely ok to be nonbinary. Makoto has the absolute right to be a boy who dresses like a girl. Or a trans girl. It's up to Makoto. <3 |
