Yeah! I saw you posting on a discussion for a show I watched recently and thought your profile & website were nice! Also thought our tastes were similar as well, so I thought I'd send a friend request ^^
Regarding Princess Tutu, I'm not sure that her human, non-princess form is necessarily not Ahiru being herself, because again, it seems like she can only even have much of a sense of self as a human, but that's getting into the philosophical weeds of it and I don't think the creators intended it to be delved into that much. I do get the message, I just wish it was done in a more, let's say, precise way, for my tastes. My friend says that for what it is, which is something that is to be taken as a subversion of sorts for young girls, it holds up well, and I'd have to agree with that in this case.
Ah I see. I do agree that the character designs in Dungeon Meshi are good, especially because they're different from the usual anime designs. For me, the designs in Megalo Box Nomad are really cool, because I like having structured, chiseled faces. I want to see jawlines back in action in anime haha.
Yeah I'm not a big fan of things that glamorize high school. Even with Tatami Galaxy I wasn't really vibing with the whole "rose colored campus life" thing.
As for Princess Tutu, I probably am missing the point in terms of what the show intended, because the closing lines between Tutu and Fakir concern both of them returning to their true selves and not living their roles. Tutu does question her love for the prince, and maybe I'm missing something, but I don't recall her actually coming to a conclusion on that? I mean, it does seem like she viewed him less romantically and formed a more personal connection, possibly a romantic one, with Fakir instead, but to me, it still seemed like she ended up giving her life for the prince despite forming no deeper connection with him. At the end, she realizes she isn't ready to give up her life because she's feeling a little bit selfish, but then she's able to do it because Fakir encourages her to return to her true self. But the natural progression would be her finally embracing her own desires and living her best life as a human, no? Like, if we get into the weeds of it, can she even retain her full personality and do the things she wants to do, as a duck? I don't know lol.
But yeah at the end of the day, not to harp on the point too much; magical girl shows have never been my thing to begin with (unless it's little witch academia).
The character designs in Fuujin Monogatari are definitely unique and they're not always pleasing to look at, but somehow they work for the story they're telling. What are some of your preferred character designs and design styles? Seems like you have a curvier, weird but cute style.
I've forgotten what those episodes were about to be honest, but I hope you got some value out of the post lol. I'm usually not one for cute girl slice of life shows, but Fuujin Monogatari was able to portray youth in a neutral, unglamorized manner, so I got value out of it even though I found it largely boring.
Yeah my taste is pretty narrow, I'll admit, but I promise I'm not being contrarian. I just happen to believe that a lot of these shows don't really have the substance to back up their reputation, or could be told in a much better way. But hey, the most important part is that we could talk about it and see where we're coming from. I tried to do that with the guy below me but he was acting like his opinion was objective fact so I asked him to prove it lol.
I checked out some of your reviews and I liked the thought you put into your Tutu review. I didn't take to Tutu as much as most other people did, but I do agree that its use of ballet and music was cool. One thing I still struggle to understand though is how the series delves into the themes of self and playing a role, though, because it seemed to me like Tutu just saw a prince charming and took it upon herself to devote herself to the role of saving the prince.
On another note, it's rare to see someone describe what works about the character designs. I dabble in character design myself so I'm also attentive to the way they use the lines to create certain affects. It's cool to see that you have some original drawings too.
That's actually what I was about to say eheh it's cool to find people with similar taste ^^
