That could've gone a lot worse for Rein. Good to know she has good friends and supporters by her side.

Episode has that decent amount of emotions as usual.

Thank goodness Rein is okay I really feared the worst when she went into the water. It was so heartwarming seeing everyone work together to save her.

It’s really interesting to see Yokai affected by their powers like this. Like how certain Yokai hibernate for the winter (I hadn’t considered that before). I love the way she described it when she woke up, the overall portrayal of the scene starting at 11:40 was really well done.
Rain-Chan is really loved, I’m glad they managed to get her out of that and that Ryo and Rain are back on good terms.

Mu-chan really pushed Jiro to grow this episode, huh? He really does have a bad habit of trying to do too much all by himself. It’s really good that someone sees and calls him out on that.
I’m glad he felt comfortable asking her advice about Haru. Mu-chan gave him the words he needed to move on.
It’s really sad Jiro didn’t get to read the letter Haru left him sooner 🥲

It was momentarily more tense and gripping than you'd necessarily expect from a show like this (although not so much anymore as it's progressively got heavier in spaced out but frequent enough doses throughout its run up to now).

I didn't think that Rein would die right then and there despite her supposedly precarious health status, but I did think there was a reasonable chance of her getting kamikakushi'd or spirited away like Mutsumi's father, whether into the imaginary dimension again or somewhere else, and neither seen nor heard from again for a bunch of episodes or maybe even the rest of the season or series (which, those might be one and the same if this series only ends up getting one season).

I'd prefer that didn't happen though as I'm fond of the episodes which focus on her and the school kids' goings-on and the friendship and light romance between her and Ryo, even over some of the other characters' subplots.

This was a fantastic end to Jiro's story (unless it's not over yet?).
Buchio, Jiro and the kappa girl are all in a good place right now so maybe the story will concentrate on Mutsumi in the next few episodes before the finale?
Or maybe not, after all this series' story developments are quite unpredictable.

As much as I love this show that's my personal hidden gem of the season, I can't turn a blind eye on how cheap the writing was in this particular episode.

Mutsumi's great grandmother telling Jiro to forget about her just to come up with a plan B ahead of herself with a letter that coincidentally was found out the very exact day Jiro felt like opening up to Mu-chan and tell her his grievances. Mu-chan's grandma reading the letter herself feels offly out of character from someone who so far seems to be the kind of people that respects privacy. Great Grandma could had easily just saved all the trouble by admiting Jiro has always been the most important person in her life and telling him that before she died (didn't even had to wait until she was on her death bed).

There's also the whole situation in the river. Rain fell into it after somehow saving Ryo. None of the other kids can speak up to tell Jiro and Yuri what happened in a hasty manner. Sure they are kids and panic is a bisch, but really? not a single one of them reacted differently? Then there's the reversal, all of them rush to "help" Jiro, but the only thing they do is cling on to him and that makes all the difference? If at least there had been some visual explanation with supernatural gimmick about bonds making the whole difference. But nope, the whole thing is just solved because a bunch of kids latched into an adult tengu's back.

I just hope next episodes gets back on the same writing quality as the previous ones.

the river event will bring ryo and rain closer and if they are not dating now they will soon.

I do believe this is the end of jiro's past, unless we see his reaction of the letter in the next chapter. Right now his focus and new promise is with mu-chan, but it would be nice to see his reaction of knowing that haru loved him and he may have loved her too.

The artistry of the river scenes, with Rain's graceful swimming, was stunning.

This episode felt like a finale tho.

I really felt sorry for Jiro and Haru. Haru lived such a tragic life. And poor Jiro may have to endure his loneliness for eternity. By the way, is it just me but I actually dislike Mu-chan. I don't know why she comes of audacious to me...

Amazing episode as always. I love these characters! Just. One nagging thought:

Feel like the letter to Jiro could have been left out. Maybe they wanted to redeem the grandmother? Like make sure no one could dispute some secret behind her final words' meaning? Why though? Such a bare act of last-seconds-before-the-episode-ends-conveniently-placed-redemption-letter tarnishes the power of truly never knowing her final thoughts but accepting the act of denying her wish anyway.

The lesson goes from "you should honor other people's memory for your own benefit and not for theirs" to "you should honor other people's memory for your own benefit and not for theirs... as long as they secretly wanted you to remember them the whole time". I'll let you decide which one of those two actually sounds like a moral. Okay. At least only the mother found it and not Jiro and I trust she will keep it secret? But it's not really the kind of letter for her eyes anyway. It simply feels like "This is so the audience doesn't hate the Grandmother" but I never hated her to begin with!!!

The episode leaves enough room for the audience to guess the Grandmother was lying to herself anyway. But! That kind of optional interpretation only holds power when you are the one who comes to realize the truth on your own.

She is Mutsumi's great grandmother. The grandmother is the one who found and read the old letter toward the end.

Yeah, as beautiful as the message was, the letter felt like an unnecessary storytelling device.

Jiro (and the audience) already reached the conclusion by that point that those who are gone should be remembered not for their sake but your own. Also, no one really wants to be forgotten, or at least no one's happy about the fact that they want to be forgotten.

It's a difficult subject, and I thought it was handled with sincerity and sensitivity... until the last scene happened.

I would've preferred if the letter never appeared, and Jiro was left unsure about whether the great-grandmother truly wanted him to forget her. But Jiro could've decided to believe that deep down she cared about him and cherished their time together... by remembering the good moments they had. The show even played a montage of their life together anyway. The message would've been clear as day.

I also would've been fine if the letter left out the "I'll probably tell you to forget me, but please don't" part. It felt like the show was being way too explicit, either because they didn't trust the audience to get it or they wanted to amp up the dramatic effect. It had the opposite effect of diminishing the impact for me. That line makes it feel like she's been preparing for a long time to tell Jiro to forget her, and in her final moments she decided to tell him that despite her reservations.

If the letter simply said "I know I've generally been terrible to you, but I just want you to know that I'm grateful for everything you've done and your friendship is precious to me", I would've been okay, and the audience would've understood that she didn't truly hate him and wasn't making that final request out of hatred.

I still enjoyed the episode, but did think that was a strange choice.

@perseii personally, people who want someone to forget about them is very selfless to begin with. They want the other to forget them do they will forget the sorrow of losing them. If it is successful, it would bring them ease. It is already known that the grandmother is caring and selfless, so the letter is definitely not needed, yet it is definitely heartbreaking.

Its like you're trying to distance a friend because you are terminally ill, but you still want to leave a letter somewhere, somehow, so that there is a chance left in the world where your friend will know the truth, that you actually still care about them. But doing so will make them remember sorrow, because of your 'selfishness' and desire to show the proof of your care.

Yeah, I like the way you to put it. People tend to be a bundle of contradictions and conflicted feelings.

I want to point out that it's also somewhat "selfish" asking someone to forget you, when you think about it. It's not being considerate of that person's own feelings; you're making the decision for them. The great-grandmother's request still caused a great deal of pain for Jiro after all, as he's been caught between preserving her memory and respecting her wishes. There's also Volkswagen-san in the same episode who was upset that his human partner kept worrying about what will happen when he's gone.

Anyway, I do agree that the great-grandmother writing a letter makes sense. I just slightly disagree with the writers making her write the letter and sharing it with us the viewers, if that makes sense.

Nakagawa's kappa self isn't on good health, and based on her observations, avoiding school seems to be the best choice...leaving Sano in the lurch. And him wanting to clear the misunderstandings between him and her, it gets worse as a slip-up of a ball into the river, where the dragon god is sleeping, despite the repercussions, Nakagawa chooses to save Sano, pitting herself in danger. This is where Jiro comes in, knowing the dragon god's instability to save her without getting sucked into the river, which incurs Mutsumi's wrath to push everyone to save her together. Even when Nakagawa found herself within the confines of the dragon god, her being able to let go and return back to the surface, thanks to Sano, it's quite possible for their possible romance, but as it stands, it's just friends looking out for one another.

Jiro may have broken his promise with Mutsumi, but amidst the fear, they reconcile, wanting her to be more involved in his life, which he shares about wanting to forget Haru as much as possible, but that he just could not forget her. Even Haru feels the same to have kind of a mutual love for each other, even if they weren't able to confess to each other before Haru had Shozo.

Now, this love between Jiro and Mutsumi, it's just like him and Haru, between different generations with a heavy inkling.

mu-chan said what her great-grandma wanted jiro to know in her letter. good for mu-chan for not giving up on him, and how bitter sweet his relationship was with mu-chan's great-grandma. now, that shadow post-credit that made a grab for mu-chan, what's that about?!
