This episode was an interesting start. I like Yasuke as an mc so far and the animation is great!

Great first episode! Interesting that the main series is set so long after Yasuke's arrival in Japan. I am interested to see how Yasuke's relationship develops with the boy as well. The animation was also amazing as expected. Not sure how I felt about the CG in the opening sequence and with the robot but the two fights with Yasuke later on was seriously clean AF. Hopefully the rest of the series is just as good as this episode.

Interesting first episode. If you are wondering where the English dubbed credits are, they are actually in the ED credits instead of the usual Netflix end title cards where the other dubbing credits are, and yes, that was Johnny Yong Bosch voicing another character with a sword, haha.

It's a very strange world but it's awesome nonetheless. The music choices were very good as well as the animation, but the story and characters still needs a bit more to make it stand out.

I am getting some major Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit vibes from this show.

Jumped into this with some expectations and it blew me out of the water. The animation is beautiful, the Flying Lotus soundtrack slaps, and they don’t really shy away for gore and blood. We’ll have to see how they develop these characters further but, really enjoyed the first episode.

When I started the episode, the only thing I knew was that it's about a black servant who became samurai. And I thought it was on his life like a "based on true story" anime. But then the episode started on the opening with robots and super powers. I was like "What the fu....?!!".
Except the first 5 minutes, the episode is quiet good and I can't wait to see the next episode.

Personally, it's good for me.

(Everyone on Reddit says they are hating this. They said the animation has low fps, even the worst MAPPA's animation, and soundtrack distracting lmfao.)

Pretty good 1st episode. I have to say that I thought the animation would be a lot better but it is something I can live through with little problem. Still would expect more from Mappa tbh.

Yasuke's character was pretty good so far, got a little bit of backstory on him too. Strong dude for sure.

Saki's magic needs some explaining too because that is some mad power up.

Also this had me laughing:

"The black man spoke Japanese?" "Yes, the black man spoke Japanese." "But the black man spoke Japanese." was funnier imo.

First episode started off really strong, I like Yasuke as a MC, the fights are also very good, takes place in the 1500’s in Nobunaga. While switching to his past and current day which has over a 20 year gap. He wasn’t as young as he was in his prime time but I could be wrong 🀷🏽‍♂️

I liked the first episode so far and I don't mind mechs and people with magical powers in this anime as long as there is some kind of explanation. It could lead to more interesting fights. Having the anime take place 20 years after the events of Nobunaga's death at Honoji was an interesting choice as it gives the creators to craft their own story for Yasuke while telling his story about his time with Nobunaga. I'm a huge fan of Flying Lotus so I like the soundtrack and the song he did with Thundercat for the OP.

Yes. I was excited when I saw that Johnny Yong Bosch was apart of the cast and I also noticed that Ming-Na-Wen is doing the voice for Natsumaru.

It feels like this show was written by a 10 year old that threw together all their "cool" ideas and ended up with a jumbled mess.

Ngl I thought it would be more of a realistic depiction of Yasuke, but I don't mind the mechs and the fantasy element of it at all. Great first episode!!!

I sort of wished they did the story more accurately in terms of the historical context. The mechs and magic elements really take away from what makes the history so interesting in the first place and it feels like they put those in to compensate for a lack of creativity in terms of the writers ability to make a story out of a realistic feudal japan.

I hate how they fictionalised yasuke already. The story would’ve been dope as an historically accurate action series without the robots and magic. Yasuke’s story on its own was cool af.

ehh. I did not expect magic etc. to play a role in this anime lol..

The compositing is awful, the English voice acting is honestly subpar. Animation is somewhat rough for such a short anime.

I didn't expect this to be a masterpiece or anything but I definitely expected more.

I watched it in English, their mouth movements didn’t match even though English is the original language. It felt really weird when I first saw them fighting with mechas. Not a fan of the story so far. I liked the animation and the soundtrack.

I was hoping for for a pseudo-historical retelling of the real life Yasuke, instead we get a mecha-magic type show. I'll give this series a chance, but it disappointed me out the gate.

This is an "interesting start" to say the least, but knowing LeSean Thomas's previous anime Cannon Busters, the man really wants to put mechas and shit in his shows, I was expecting a more dramatized depiction of history but still kind of an accurate approach but this guy just putting the shit he wanted to expand in Cannon Busters but couldn't because of budget problems, like having good animation for fight scenes that involve mechas and beast people, that shit got me by surprise, it still can be saved, cus it isn't inheretly bad to make a complete fictional story out of historical people/events, that is usually what people do to validate their fictional stories, but yea, kinda too risky to pull of this shit well, it doesn't look like its going to end well if its done like Cannon Busters.

Gonna sound like an asshole here but this is what you get when you get an American to do an anime about Japanese history/culture, but we kinda saw it comming since the director is known for making comedy shows and fantasy/mecha setting in his previous work, so he isn't the greatest pic for a historically accurate anime tbh

Agree completely. It's a shame because I was really looking forward to seeing Yasuke's story explored, but I don't like the what they did with this at all. Should have made it more grounded in reality, and with a Japanese writer at the helm. Oh well, I'll give the rest of the show a shot regardless.

Wow Mecha and Magic?
Nani?
So is based on Real Life Yasuke but with a Twist.
Damn the Trailer trick us, i thought this is the Original story of Yasuke.

I like when they showed us Nobunaga Oda told the people to wash Yasuke Body, he thought it Black because Dirty, that's is Historical Accurate though.

That ending fight though, there is Mecha, there is Stand User and also Beast Transformation.
Wtf I'm confused.

I think in order to enjoying this i should just treat this as Alternative Universe of Japan where Magic and Mecha exists in Sengoku Era.

Btw shouldn't they add Magic and Mecha to the Genre?

That was so disappointing.

Only the first few seconds was looking fine until it got all supernatural, what the heck is up with those magics and mecha stuff??

I thought it was supposed to be historical and will mainly focus on the story of the African Samurai. Just why did they decide to ruin it by adding mecha? And that humongous woman in the end just transformed into a bear, what the heck was that?

The animation was OK, the music is good. I watched the Japanese dub, so Yasuke's VA did a good job but those kids' voices sucked. It seems like they used kids to voice the kids, so I'll let it slide.

Anyway, a very interesting episode lol, it's everywhere.
Graduated High School in May of 2022. Summer vacation has finally arrived. I have once again regained the power of a new anime fan, being able to watch multiple anime episodes in a day. Time to binge-watch every single anime I can into the night until college arrives. SADGE. SUPER SADGE... College has begun as of Monday, August 30, 2022, so you won't be seeing me much around these parks. See you on weekends, I guess... School me is back. Sigh! I'll at least try for one anime a day with all this course load.

Very promising start. Interesting mix of various themes, resulting in an original looking show. I see many people posting in this thread didn't like it, but as for me, I'm positive. Alternative history, more or less loosely based on Azuchi-Momoyama era (Nobunaga wasn't besieged by giant robots and sorcerers, kekw), mixed with mecha and magic? Sounds good to me, haha. And I'm not even a fan of mecha.
