THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Episode 2 is up on Netflix Japan. Noi is such a badass but it's also interesting to see his relationship with the other cast such as Shin. Lol, that little dream though.

There's more of the district being shown in the world. Humor remains the usual for this series which keeps it entertaining.

They adapted up till the metamorphosis chapter. The adaptation is pretty good so far and I just picked up the manga. Really loved the series so far! Anime of the season potential.

The CGI is pretty good imo.

Opening scene was great. Seems they cut some dialogue when they were in Migimaru hole and the 1000 arms bar (which is a shame cos Orange did this with beastars as well). Not too happy with how they handled the Shin "bloodlust" moment at dinner compared to the manga. Music and BG art are 10/10 but it's hard to see past the CG at points despite looking better than last episode. Overall still happy with this but tbf I might be slightly biased compared to general viewers

Yeah, the CG's much better than the previous episode, Kaiman's head doesn't look quite as out of place. Anyway, pretty solid episode. Shin and Noi are great. I didn't mind the dinner scene and quite like the sketchy close up on Shin's face.

Yup the CG's much better (Kaiman's face is actually the mos distracting bit) and they're doing a decent job adapting the story from the manga.

Oh and as I said in the previous episode discussion, and I'll say it again. NOI. Best Girl. How can you not love a 209 cms tall lady like her? And I have to say they really nailed Shin and En's voice actors. They sound exactly how I would have imagined they would.

3D animations are good and promising but CGI human faces are pretty bad.
They should have done what FGO Babylonia is doing with Gorgon, keep the faces non-CG and use CG mainly for the body like her tail and hair snakes. But still, as said 2nd ep has been better than 1st ep so things look promising.

What we learned from the second episode:

1. Horror and comedy both at the same time, yep that is Dorohedoro for you.
2. Characters have strong personalities.
3. One tit out, lol.
4. Nikaidou is a tough girl.
5. Ebisu best girl.

5/5

The mushrooms are... people. I don't blame the guy, I don't like waste either... and I guess that includes people, but it's not exactly tasteful... or probably tasty (or at least I hope it isn't).

Also, Kaiman, give the guy a break, you just shoved him into your mouth and he was pretty cool about telling you what he was told.

Just to list a couple of biases.
Likes: A good story, characters, writing, romance, a good plot twist or something that breaks expectations (In a good way), 'backstory' and justice.
Dislikes: Bad romance, too much fanservice, the harem genre, yuri, yaoi, and bad writing.

Another great episode. Maybe it's biased because I already love the characters, but I think even non-readers will find something amazing there. For example, when Shin used his magic on the cross-eye dude. The static noise overlapped with vinyl music - we don't know what Shin's magic does yet but it's already terrifying.
Or the scene with acupuncture dude in Kaiman's head. The "person" inside, with a cloth on his face not revealing it fully, his fucked up grin and almost bending neck while approaching that guy. I wonder if MAPPA has invited anyone from horror department.

ALSO. I thought they would censor Ebisu's breast with a cloth maybe, but they didn't. The nipples were not shown though, but it didn't feel awkward or out of place at all. Loved it.

why should you? do u read 2 chapters from a book and know whats going on? if so it must be a badly written one.

anyways this episode was phenomenal. i never woulda thought a cgi anime would end up being better than the majority of the season.

It's all going to make sense, trust me. There's no big asspulls here, just a slowburn story were we don't get fed everything of the bat.

The art direction of this show is so fucking good that even the CGI feels like it blends in nicely. Just wish I had a higher quality version of the episode to watch, the BDs'll be a treat to view at least for sure. Even the animation has stepped up from the first episode. I love the tone of this so far too, it appears gritty but the cast is already quite lovable despite clearly not being the best people (fucking hell Nikaido went IN at the end, the eyeball-stepping got a wince out of me)

I must be in the minority here, because the CG is goddamn awful, Mappa is better than this. The CG models doesn't really help setting the tone for this series, it just feels pale and dull, it's a shame, because there are some fantastic 2D-shots that gets ruined by CG afterwards, it feels like a big downgrade, specially for human faces. (also, what the heck is wrong with these body proportions?)

Not a fan of the comedy either, I feel like this is going to be Kokkoku all over again. Quite the shame, because the story seems interesting enough to carry the show, but all these little details are ruining the experience.

Caimon and the others from Hole make it sound like Sorcerers are bad guys, but the sorcerers have such a wide variety of personalities that I can't think of them as only bad people at all.

Background art is great, music fits the show well.

Other than kaiman face, I have no qualms on cgi.

They are mostly adapting 3 chapter per ep (It doesn't feel like they are rushing with this adaptation) and so the pacing is good.

Might give it a 7 or a promising 8 by the end of season.

Although people are recommending manga over anime for this, I suggest you to try first 2 eps before deciding. If you are cringing at the cgi at every scene, then go ahead with manga. As for me I'll be going with anime

That's right, it is enough for you. And that's fine, it's your taste and nothing can change that.

The problem for me, is that there is a constant switch between CG and 2D character models that is straight up bad, specially if the character designs differ from each one of them, you can see the difference between the images I added to my earlier comment, the blonde guy seems rather dull and pale in comparison to the 2D shot he got where he looks more lively (there's that, and the unrealistic physics almost every single CGI anime has that makes their character looks really clumsy and fake)

Considering the good 2D work this anime has, there was literally NO NEED to do CG.

Even then, I might accept that they use CG in something like the lizard guy or vehicles, but I find odd that they use CG mostly for the main cast (including key villains and the main lead) whereas there is great artwork for 2D backgrounds and other not so important characters. Tbf, I wouldn't really have minded if it were CG if it looked good and it was CG only (like Houseki no Kuni for example), but there is a big difference in detail between CG and 2D, CG looks more... pale and clumsy in comparison to 2D.

If budget was a problem, then they could have done it full CG.

I don't know, I personally think the CG is really effective in the dinamic scenes, and blent with the backgrounds. But yes, I would have preferred too a more total approach (let's see what they pull off)

Great episode!
Also we've got the eye stomp, top of the head cut and Ebisu's dress scenes all faithfully recreated, so it's probably safe to say there are no reasons to be worried about censorship. Now some things were painted on/not quite textured still, but it will be super easy to fix for BD releases.

Duh, they want to lower their production costs, not to rise them. Not so important characters than only show up for 10 seconds before dissappering forever are cheaper to hand draw, you don't want to create a new CG model for a couple of shots in one episode. You want to create CG models for reoccuring characters that show up constantly to get the most bang for your buck on them. Like for example if one model costs as much as 10 minutes of hand drawn character animation, it means it is cheaper to hand draw minor characters with less than 10 minutes of screen time while it is also cheaper to CG major characters who have more than 10 minutes across the show.
One exception is zoom out moving crowds shots where you might want to use CG on minor background characters by reusing same models multiple times, multiplying their usefulness per second in the process. Good examples of that are big scale army on army battles.
