Warner Bros. Japan announced on Tuesday that it will distribute a live-action film based on the Fullmetal Alchemist manga series by Hiromu Arakawa. The film is currently scheduled for release in the winter 2017 timeframe.

Fullmetal Alchemist will be directed by Fumihiko Sori, who previously helmed live-action films of Ping Pong in 2002 and Ashita no Joe in 2011. Kazuya Hamana will serve as an executive producer, having previously held the same position in the production of the 2013 live-action film of Toshokan Sensou.

Sori is putting digital technology at the forefront of the film's production and intends to depict the original work as much as possible. "The cast is entirely composed of Japanese actors, but the cultural setting is that of Europe," he said. "However, the race and nationality of the characters aren't specifically identified."

Hiromu Arakawa drew the Fullmetal Alchemist manga between 2001 and 2010 in Shounen Gangan. The series was compiled into 27 volumes and has been adapted into two separate television anime series in 2003 and 2009. It won the 49th Shogakukan Manga Award for the shounen demographic in 2004.

Filming of Fullmetal Alchemist will begin in early June in Italy.

edit: oh, it's directed by a Japanese man with Japanese cast... well better than Hollywood movies I guess, maybe I'll give it a try. They better have good OST tho.

It's only a matter of time before this gets an American version. If that happens, at least we won't have to worry about white-washing since the characters aren't even Japanese anyway.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.

It would make a lot of sense for it to be made by westerns to be honest.

Mod Edit: Your image has nothing to do with Fullmetal Alchemist. Just because other series got live actions and failed doesn't mean this has yet. Do not repost it.

Oh boy, this isn't going to turn out good giving that Japanese films have been looking way too low-budget for the last few years (this has been brought up before by the way) compared to Hollywood, South Korea, and China filmmaking.

What really surprise me that the people that attack Hollywood for whitewashing are not going after this film for "yellow-washing" (same thing happened to Attack on Titan, no accusation of yellow-washing from international fans). Also looks like Japan didn't bother to get Hollywood actors to cast them for the FMA characters.

Oh, wow. Dean Fujioka's in it, and on top of that, he does Roy! That would be awesome! Johnny's entertainment member playing the main role again? Nooooooo~~~~ WHY~~~~~~ Edit: I don't know what to think of it overall after seeing that there are quite a lot of "owarai geinin" in it.

..but why?? I'll definitely not watch it since I don't like these live-action movies adaptations. Anyway the budget should be high enough because otherwise the fight scenes could be kind of ridiculous to watch, I guess.

can you add the word "Japan" to make it "Warner Bros. Japan" since the title is misleading, i personally taught its gonna be a Hollywood movie adaptation lol

Oh gosh so the rumor from all those months ago turns out to be true T^T I was really hoping FMA live action would only stay a rumor...

But well, hoping WB not half-assing this for the sake of the fans. Not sure about Yamada Ryosuke and Honda Tsubasa (why???) as leads though.

I wonder who they will cast.

Edit: Oh its japanese cast. Talk about unfitting. THis is one story where having everyone be japanese makes zero sense.

What's so good about using a japanese cast in a 100% western Germany-based setting?

That would actually been good, but alas no.

Me:Well fuck....oh wait it's largely a white cast! This could transition well!

>All Japanese cast.
Me:Well fuck.

One of the few anime that could turn the tide of shitty live action anime movies and Japan takes first stab at it....when the whole main cast is Germanic/European.

Best of luck Japan.

This posts are exactly my thoughts.
And Warner Bros? They are freaking bad at live action movies. Can't they partner with Marvel Studios? Just like they do to Marvel Comics?
Well anyway, Toei ruined The Avengers (Marvel: Disk Wars) with their stupid special move/attacks name calling.
If this FMA was made by US, It could get a lot better. Like Edge of Tomorrow and Godzilla. (Any news with Ghost in the Shell movie?)
