I didn't expect them to resolve the mom's problems in this ending, but even though it was quite rushed, the ending with Makoto crying still left a mark. I can't help but feel the source material must be way better given that the only issue I had with the story was the pacing. I'll definitely read up on the source material since this was one of the better anime this season despite these issues.

The resolution of Makoto's conflict with his mom felt like it came too easy. The simple answer I think that the anime tried to give us was that his mother didn't want Makoto to be bullied just like her father. So when she saw Makoto doing well in public and at school, she started to open up to the idea. But I don't think that really lines up with the severity of her reaction to her father, and straight up cutting ties with him. Also, the thing that really seemed to throw her off the edge was his father's 'creepiness', so that doesn't make much sense too. Hopefully the source material delves deeper into this.

@Marinate1016 He does, he said it quite literally, he is a boy that likes cute things. Stop trying to force your agenda.
@Kary88 I think its a completely correct interpretation to call Makoto nonbinary, at the very least they're very obviously nonbinary adjacent. It feels strange to insist that just because if they identify that way that it is some kinda agenda.

16:50 in this episode during the confession scene, "Dad asked me earlier. If I wanted to live as a boy. Or if I wanted to live as a girl. And I finally found the answer. I don't want to live as either. I... I want to live as myself."

Feels pretty cut and dry. Denying the fact that Makoto is nonbinary loses so much of the impact of the scene and much of Makoto's development in the show as a whole. Senpai Wa Otokonoko is a very trans story at its core
Cute, fat, chubby, gay, queer, glasses wearing, nerdy, introverted, weird, kinda fucked up in a cute anime girl way, squishy, soft, fucking gay, silly anime girls my beloved
I love cute girls and philosophical shit ;D

really good show that sadly isn’t getting the attention it deserves because the topic is a bit taboo; but I am glad Makoto’s mom did eventually come around to his way of happiness

I can’t wait for the movie

They reaslly just speedran all this huh. I was hoping that this arc and makoto's mom would get fleshed out more in the anime or maybe even do something different than the webtoon, as even in the webtoon it didnt make sense why the mom had such dramatic reactions >.>

At least Makoto has a grandfather who likes girly stuff like him, and it explains the mother's behavior event though it isn't acceptable at all especially towards her son tbh anyway it ended well for the family and seems like the mother finally understood that Makoto is happy this way...

So, basically, everyone in Makoto's family is mentally unwell, apart from his father:

His grandfather decided to sacrifice his relationship with his own daughter so that he could find some sort of self-gratifying happiness while also publicly exposing himself doing something that very obviously would have ended up being seen or heard about by his daughter, and after this happens, he doesn't even try to make amends or explain himself, he just lets his daughter hate him.

Makoto's mother is traumatized, she ended up abandoning everything she liked (basically being a gal) because her dad was a crossdresser, then did so again after she literally prompted Makoto to like girly stuff, and because this reminded her of her father, she closed herself off again and then tried to undo everything she taught Makoto by force, and it took a quite-rushed turn of events for her to accept her son (but apparently not her father). She also sorta ignores that her son is almost an adult and that he's old enough to make decisions that might impact his life; at that point, it's not up to her anymore, let the kid be.

Makoto is incapable of properly explaining himself to anyone else, incapable of understanding what he feels for anyone else, he has no defined personality, he acts entirely on impulse, and the real reason why is never quite clear: "because I don't know if I like it [even though I clearly do]", "because of social pressure [even though I don't really care what other people think]", "because of my mother [even though I just hide it from her]"; guy's confusing as fuck.

This wasn't a bad anime, and I understand the idea behind the story and the character development, but it's a headache to try and understand the psychological aspects behind each character, in fact, other than Aoi, I wouldn't say any of them have very convincing personalities nor are their stories truly believable. Aoi's the closest one to a truly felt story, because her parents were always absent and she always felt alone, but her feelings for Makoto were always just impossible to fucking understand, and she ended up dropping them all of a sudden.

My head hurts.
Pretend there's something flashy and cool here.

Makoto went to see his maternal grandfather who has the same inclinations as Makoto for girly things. Makoto get his mother to go out shopping together and show he is happy the way he is.

Aw eveyrone in this anime went through it, but in the end everyone was happy. Such a good ending. I'm glad Makoto got some family lore, his granddad is a cool dude. I hope they get to hang out more. The mother has turned a page, what's funny is they have similar taste in clothes. Like mother, like son.

Aoi and her mom's situation hasn't been quite resolved yet... I guess we'll see the resolution in the movie.

8/10 for me tbh

It seems that the story really wants us to think that that Aoi's mother really has turned around. I understand people make mistakes. But like...has she even apologized to her daughter once? for abandoning her for 10 whole years? How do you expect me to believe she is sincere otherwise? Either way, it seems Ryuuji was thinking of Makoto, which loops back to the reason why Aoi probably felt something about Makoto at all to begin with, because she wanted to see her mother and Makoto looked like her

The flashback was really weird. It was meant to explain the mother's actions, but all it does is show me how terrible of a person she really was, and that she hasn't grown up at all since she was a kid. Like I get being shocked finding out your dad was a crossdresser. But to drag that around for years and years on end, like dude was just out dressing up, it's not like he was out cheating on the mom or anything no? The resolution was really unconvincing and unsatisfactory because how can someone who has been a bigot for all these years, to her own father and her own child, suddenly turned around just because of that? And that comment about the bag color and how it was portrayed like she was just scared for her child to be ostracized clashed entirely with the flashback where it was clearly her own perception of things that was the issue to begin with.

Wow, that was easily AOTS of the Summer. Glad to see this one pull through because the rest of the season was fairly weak for my tastes. I was so happy that this series took the cross-dressing seriously. I thought the internal and external conflicts were handled so respectfully.

I felt for so many of the characters throughout this one. So much so that I couldn't choose an OTP in this one. I wanted Makoto, Saki, and Ryuuji to all three end up happy. So, while the romantic drama never really got a definitive conclusion, I was ok with that. I didn't want to see someone left out. I felt so bad for Saki when she was away from our trio there for a few episodes. I didn't want to see that again.

I'm still super cautious of Saki's mom. I kept expecting her to disappear again. I suspect Grandma knows a lot of things we don't and she was against the reunion. Also, I'm not warm to Makoto's mom either, but it at least looked like she was genuinely trying. However, it doesn't change the fact that she was an awful human being to her father. I feel so sorry for him. I hope he gets a happy ending too at some point in the story.

So, I guess my only complaints would be that several things are left unresolved. We still have the upcoming movie and I will read the manga for this, so that eventually won't be an issue. The animation was mediocre at times, but I don't need sakuga for a series like this. Overall, I really loved this series and gave it a 9.13

I still think that Makoto's mother is a horrible person, she almost ruined life of two her relatives due to her misandria (I feel like discriminating men because they wear "female" clothes or act "feminine" is more of a misandria/sexism rather than transphobia, but I could be wrong) and overall agree with everything that IzanaSolos said about it, but all well that ends well. I wished that Makoto would stay with his grandfather.
