-Hanamaru best tree

-The scene at the library made Chika seem a ton more forceful than Honoka
-Wait the flashback to when Dia started hating idols made me wonder if the reason she hates them is that Muse broke up
-Looks like Mari and Kanan do know each other
-That recruitment was easy, although Rin being Hanamaru's inspiration is a bit strange
-Actually Maru and Ruby's motivation behind joining the idol club make tons more sense than Rin and Maki's motivations
-Chika's more of an airhead than Honoka actually
-Come to think of it who's their choreographer
-I think these stairs are like at least twice as long as the stairs μ's used, which might be indicative of their difficulty in winning the inevitable Love Live
-The Love Live 5th year anniversary magazine thing puts μ's disbandment much earlier than Dia's distaste of idols
-Wait, does the walk down the shrine stairs mean Hanamaru quit?
-Turns out she did.
-Oh never mind she does go back at the end. I think I would have liked it more if they had another episode dedicated to Hanamaru, but whatever.
-IIRC μ's started off at 999 and Aqours starts at 4999, which means the elongated shrine stairway is proportional to the difficulty in succeeding as idols, or something.

The reasoning and process behind (2 of) the first-year recruitments made more sense this time around. Rather than the first years (of the original LL series) wholeheartedly devoting themselves to something that they haven't actually done yet, Ruby and Hanamaru joined as temporary members first. At first I thought there wasn't enough backstory to make the Hanamaru and Ruby scene on the stairs work, but it turns out I just wasn't paying attention the first time and didn't notice that basically every time Ruby talked about aspirations she mentioned her sister. I'm still not a fan of how Hanamaru temporarily quit for dramatic effect, but her inspiration to rejoin Aqours was Rin, which means that my second favorite μ's singer inspired my second favorite Aqours singer to be an idol in-universe.

Hanamaru sounds great as always in the ED song, and it seems that Yoshiko will likely be singing the ED next episode, although it seems unlikely she'll use her Yohane voice for it. Which is a shame because her Yohane voice is without a doubt my favorite singing voice within the whole LL franchise.

This episode really made me like Ruby and Hanamaru a lot more. Ruby's speech to Hanamaru at the end of the episode was very moving. I loved the throwback to Rin's story, didn't expect that to be Hanamaru's inspiration to join Aqours. But it's pretty cool to see that Rin and Hanamaru have parallels to each other despite having very different personalities. And Hanamaru and Ruby singing the ending, their version of Yume Kataru yori Yume Utaou was absolutely beautiful. My god, I ship them so much.

I don't know what I ship more now, DiaMari or KananMari.

So looks like Yohane is getting her own episode next week. Guess that means she'll be the next join.

good episode, but a bit too melodramatic. i'd like to see one idol anime where the members don't have personal problems, are shy or srew up at a concert - instead build the story around rival groups, CD selling and appearing in shitty tv shows as tarento ...

I was rather skeptical of this series. There is a lot that can go wrong when trying to create a series like this. The original was very successful, probably more so than anyone expected, but it is complete and nothing more can be done with it. In order to continue the franchise, the creators have to try a new story with new characters. Such things often go poorly, and in the first few episodes, I was worried that this one would crash and burn. If it is nothing more than a repeat of the original idea, then there is no point in creating it.

I still worry that it might end up being too similar to the original, but with this episode, the series is starting to feel like it has its own voice and its own story. It obviously owes a lot to the original, and it makes perfect sense that the girls in this series would see the girls in the original as role models, but the girls in this series are starting to look like they are unique characters who aren't carbon copies of the characters in the original series, although they aren't all the way there yet. The two new members have helped to shake things up, and I hope that the group develops its own personality as the remaining members join.

It will be difficult to pull this off, but I am hopeful. This series obviously owes a lot to the original, and I can't imagine it existing without having the original to precede it, but to be successful, it can't just be a retelling of the original idea; it needs to find its own voice. With this episode, I think it has made some progress in that direction. I hope it continues to find its own place in the world while still paying homage to the original; I would love to see it succeed.
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

Hanamaru's zura = rin's nya

Hanamaru wearing dog shirt(like, shes the dog same as rin being the cat) Can they think of something more original?

Ruby = hanayo, shy idol loving girl, and upon seeing wiki. she likes potatoes just like hanayo loves her rice. In short she'll be your potato loving school idol for the rest of season who does nothing but glorify potatoes

Dia = eli... *sigh*

Mari = potential aizen/nozomi

And they meeting place is a rooftop again...

And the 5th episode, just like the previous series, will be a nico episode.

And also, how many they have to show us rin's pic? I get it, hanamaru is a rin clone..

-_- in short, this is a cringy episode. Fite me fags!

plus Chika's casual wear being a orange shirt with "Chi" on it just like Honoka had an orange shirt with "Ho" on it

You being a childhood friend and in charge of making the costumes like Kotori

Riko playing the piano and in charge of writing the music like Maki

The way the story is moving seems to be very "in your face" especially with Chika calling Ruby and Hanamaru cute out loud. I'm honestly trying really hard to convince myself to like Sunshine......

I don't think the writer for this particular series has that much creativity.

Instead of looking something new, I suggest looking for something you can enjoy. ;)

No fite needed. When one has a winning series, just rip it off with the reboot. If you're already cringing it will only get worse. Leave the ship and swim home if you can't handle it. ^_^ Just leave the girls in our capable, queer hands.

Someone should make a video on all the cute squeals Ruby made in the library. That was so adorable, and the poking cheeks scene too.

And thus Aquors begins their training regime. If I remember correctly Chika is wearing the same type of training clothes as Honoka
5th anniversary and muse still standing as the popular idol unit. I'd love to see a triple concert between A-Rise, muse and Aquors, it would be one amazing concert OVA episode.

Ruby's reason to not like idols, kind of messed up for Dia to do that to her sister. Force her to dislike idols and not care about Ruby's feelings.

Anyway, looks like Yohane is next. Finally, the Umi of the show is next. Can't wait to see Yohane steal the spotlight.

We already knew that Chika is Honoka's counterpart in Aqours. It was also obvious already that Dia is Eli's counterpart and Dia herself claimed in this episode that she wanted to be like Eli. Ruby is indeed Hanayo's counterpart as they were both very shy at first and love school idols very much. The episode also told us that Hanamaru is Rin's counterpart even though they're opposites in athletic skills. The past few episodes showed that Mari is Nozomi's counterpart and You is Kotori's.

I'm not sure about the rest mostly because of the school years they're in. If all their school years match then that leaves Riko as Umi's counterpart, Yoshiko as Maki's and Kanan as Nico's. But if you ignore their years then Riko is more like Maki's counterpart than Umi's. Yoshiko seems more like Nico's counterpart than Maki's from what I've seen. Kanan seems more like Umi's counterpart than Nico's.

Shit! they just brought the feels back again. it was even more spesific. They brought back the feel when Rin wear a wedding dress. damn! brings back the memories again

Overall, i think it's way better than the previous episode. cause i like that they focused more on Ruby and Hanamaru in this episode although i thought it was a little bit rushed (?) but regardless of that, i still enjoyed this episode a lot. i can say it's one of the best episode so far. most reason because of the characterization on both new character especially on Hanamara. guess i shouldn't judge a character from it's cover huh.....actually i really like her character in general a lot. really great character imo in looks and personality.

looking foward for the next episode.

I'm happy to say that each episode of Love Live! Sunshine is incrementally better than the preceding episode. This one was particularly nice.

Hanamaru-chan would be my soulmate if I were several years younger and a 2D character. Her reminiscence at the beginning of this episode is parallel to my own.

The club room mess made me crack up. I've spent the last two days cleaning my apartment that looked as cluttered as the club room when I first started. It's like someone went into a library and tipped the shelves over, but I've gotten it under control now.

With them getting that club room, I can just assume that our third years, Kanan, Dia and Mari I think formed a school idol club somehow and it didn't work out. Mari doesn't look like she has given up yet, but Dia and Kanan have. >.<

At least Hanamaru and Ruby are on the ship now. Really like that they parallel reference their characters from the first love live.

But I guess I can see why people hate this since they want this series to be much more different from the first LL.

I need a clearer picture of the timeline of the timeskip. >.<

Hanamaru seems nice and I liked her narration although I couldn't feel Ruby's story, it felt like triviality to me.

And they are still walking in µ's shadow, copying everything they've done before (even from first Love Live perspective). They are basically retelling µ's story just with different girls and this doesn't work. Whole series is dwelling way too much in the past if they want to surpass it. Whoever is writing it is not doing the best job.

btw - here's timeline for anyone interested:

So this takes place 5 years after the 2nd love live. Then how are people still freaking out about U's? They should be pretty obscure by now. Also if U's is such big deal 5 years after they disbanded why is no still talking about Arise? They won the FIRST love live and went on to be professionals. They should be much more relevant then they are.

It's also a little weird that if U's is still such a big deal now, 5 years later, why Riko didn't seem to recognize anything of it at all when Chika show U's clip in episode 1. Despite she transfered from Otonokizaka - surely she's heard of them, even a little.

Or maybe the 5 year anniversary featuring U's on the magazine cover happen to be some kind of one time only. The previous & next covers features other groups.

Oh well, anime logic. I'd better not to overthink much about it. ^^;

Still disappointed that this show is still leaning so hard on the original series because it's desperate to be successful.

Like...it's fucking Love Live. It could've been a 100% original concept with no ties to the original and it would still sell a metric fuck ton. But instead, they chose to ride the first series' success and bring it up for plot convenience as much as possible.

I think that Hanamaru relating to Rin was probably the only acceptable use of this so far.

I mentioned I think in the episode 1 or 2 discussion about how all of the characters are basically carbon copies of the original nine as well, with some being a combination of a few. This episode made me notice how many scenes they've basically copied from the first as well; the 3 girls making a mediocre debut in the gym, the rooftop practice space and miracle clubroom, the stair training, the two girls who only join because the other is joining...one of them being super shy/idol freak. C'mon, at some point you have to start writing some original material here.

On the plus side though, it appears that Sunrise has fully embraced that Kotori meme from the original series with her big ass round face peeking out. I must've missed it in the first episodes, but they very briefly pay homage to that with You's face in the OP credits, lol.

I have to agree. I mean, this would have been the episode to back the **** off bit in terms of "MUSE MUSE MUSE" every two minutes, instead of zealously dragging themselves into the shadow of their predecessors.

Must try harder in the coming episodes.

To be honest this was the least cringe worthy episode so far. They did not rip off as much as others did. There was some originality. At least roof top as training ground is reasoned here. Ruby being massive Muse fan, it makes sense that she would suggest same training spot.

Funny because I probably have the least in common with her, but she's just amazingly adorable, I find her kindness to be so admirable. She reminds me of Rin a little, I just love her.

I´m all in this anime, I´m starting to feel just as happy, sad and warm watching this as when watching the other 3. Love Live no matter the characters just does things in me. Says a lot about Sunrise who I just checked out as I was typing this and have apparently made some well known and famous titles like Gundam, Code Geass, Gintama, InuYasha, Accel World... How about that.

Hanamaru's story made me like her. Then again, like with Maki, Hifumi from New Game!, Squall from FFVIII and others, I fucking love loners. Ruby's voice is somewhat annoying, but I kind of like her too. I especially like how she stood up to Dia. Every character got some screen time.

I'm not an avid book reader, but Maru's backstory really moved me. I feel like there's probably a lot of people who would find her situation to be relatable.

What really matters is 'Do you want do it?'

This episode was fun and cute as always but I really liked the underlying message. There really isn't enough anime out there with really nice, positive messages. There's so many shows where they just throw dramatic conflict in as a means to extend the episode's running time rather than using it prove a point or at least get an emotional reaction from the audience.

Sweetie_Love said:
I love how they gave focus to Rin here. It says a lot since self-esteem issues are still something girls will always struggle with, whether it be when they're already in an idol group (Rin) or staying cooped up in your comfort zone (Hana-chan).

That's part of what's actually really good about Love Live! Someone will find one of the characters relatable so that they connect with them and the series. I feel like this has happened to a lot of fans. The positive messages really help. The series is very popular, and I totally think it deserves its popularity, as far as the anime is concerned.

However, the frequency of the μ's callbacks bothered me. I don't like how they literally point out who their counterparts are, and while they serve as an inspiration to Aqours, I feel like Sunshine is starting to rely on them too heavily. I'm not saying the characters are all the same as μ's, when they're not. The story just needs to separate itself more.

It would be a given for the girls that their favorite member of u's would be the girl that they most associated with their very own personality and I can definitely see the parallels between Ruby and Hanayo and Hanamaru to Rin. It really warmed my heart to see Hanamaru and Ruby follow their hopes and dreams to become school idols regardless of their current capabilities and circumstances.

Hanamaru knew that she lacked the physical ability to perform for long instances, making her see herself as someone who's inappropriate to become a school idol since she's just tagging along with her idol fanatic friend, seeing Rin, who doesn't look like the ordinary cutesy idol, shine bright in the spotlight inspired her to keep on going and learning about her being in the same situation she's in sealed the deal!

Ruby used to have a lot of fun with Dia playing idol but her older sister's sudden sour attitude towards them at home prevented her from being open about her passion. It's really admirable to see that someone as shy as Ruby was able to stand up for her dreams and tell Dia exactly what she feels. That's two new members but a new hurdle had presented itself with them having to climb the ranks against 4998 other groups in the country.

Felt a little bad for Hanamaru, but at least she seems to enjoy being with herself so there's that.

I find it fitting that Ruby has Hanayo (I believe) as her favourite Muse's idol (Eli being Dia's is very fitting as well), lol. Also, I think Hanamaru's favourite is Rin since the camera zoomed to her when Hanamaru was reading the idol magazine? I should remember who the other Aquors' favourite idols, to be honest. I think Chika's is Honoka?

I really like Hanamaru's role in this episode, to be honest. I just like how it's well written. Oh, and the fact that the camera zooms in on Rin's face on the magazine confirms that she is Hanamaru's favourite idol, I guess.

Ngl, I can't stand Ruby at all: she sounds, looks and acts like a 1st grader. Kinda the same with Hanamaru but she seems smart. I found interesting that she has been a loner for her whole life but she has never been sad about that, showing o be perfectly fine and satisfied with herself. Happy that Rin sort of appeared and influenced Maru.
