Excellent episode. I was hoping that Ushio said goodbye to his girlfriend. I think he's going to get some scolding once they meet up somewhere or when Ushio returns.

Every single episode of this show so far has been phenomenal. This 7.65 rating baffles me. How could this anime be objectively improved? I think it's been the best it could be up to this point.

Oh, MAL..

'Cause people saw 4 episodes and thought "omg, it's going to be a monster of the week kind of shit" and worst, "it's fuckin' old... look at the art. I want boobies and sunshine-out-of-the-ass new-art-crap Kotoura-san kind a thing".
And that's it... an awesome anime wasted on boring kids...

I'm so confused. Last episode, episode 6, was that beach episode, right? So when did he fight that youkai that told him about his mother? That opening feels like a previous episode recall, but it's a flashback to a scene I've never seen before. Either some episode I saw accidentally cut off an important part during the uploading process or there's zero continuity. For this show's sake, I hope it's a tech error on my end, or else this show has the worst continuity gap of the season and Aoharu already had a really bad one.

I personally don't like the art because the styles don't match. The character designs keep their retro look, but then the background scenery looks more updated, and then there'll be really, really modern looking special effects. It feels like no communication went into what would be the best things to update and still have a coherent visual experience.

Other things I'd like improved? Less friendly fire violence between protagonists. It's been way more awkward than funny, and it makes the actual violence and certain other scenes like Ushio punching his dad for real lack impact. Next, more continuity. I mean, my confusion with this episode aside, unless I've been having way more tech errors than I thought, his dad finding out the beast spear was out was literally a blink and you'd miss it scene of him staring at the shed in shock. No real communication happened between the two of them prior to this episode, and they certainly could have squeezed that in somewhere and tightened up the monster of the week stuff a little. As much as the phrase "show don't tell" annoys me, why isn't the beast spear ever vocal to the audience? We've only ever heard Ushio talking about how he hears it. Also, Tora being evil in the past is only ever shown in that classical art style, so you never really get the sense that he's being reformed since he's been silly since the first scene he was legit shown in. And finally, given the frequency and scale and the youkai attacks, yeah, I know the beast spear is attracting them and we're following around protagonists who're deeply involved with this stuff, but we're on episode 7, we've seen no indication that there's any group/power going around erasing memories, so shouldn't it be more of a semi-open secret/conspiracy among the populace than the total shock just about all of the characters have expressed thus far? But that's more of a problem I have with the genre in general than Ushio specifically.

And then in regards to the score, Ushio's not doing extremely poorly. Most people, (32% of those who voted) just have it as an 8 for now because it hasn't really demonstrated the overarching storyline/character development yet. Not to mention 26K people have it on their watching list, and only like, 7K people voted, so the 7.65 only indicates a quarter of the potential opinions.

First off, regarding the episode 6, u did missed it... At the end, after the ending, there's "the recap" ;)

As for the art itself, I don't find that "lack of communication" u found, I think it's quite the opposite: They knew exactly what they wanted: Ushio to Tora was extremely popular at the time, even winning a couple of awards. I think the public audience is very well set: the fans of that time.
I've read the manga, yes, but by looking at the 1st episode it's quite clear that they wanted to keep the 90's vibe and still give it a space in time. I don't find that disturbing, I find it refreshing :)

As for all those questions about the violence/humor kind of thing, it's the autors touch... I'm not against it, sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't.
As for the rest, like 80% will be explained and will probably make more sense, and since I don't want to be spoiler... xD

The 7.85 is still very poor for something like this... I don't know, I feel like people don't respect classic things anymore, like "old" is "queasy"...
But hey... They already said that the main story will be adaptaded, so i'm not worried xDD

This is one my favorite shounens I'll be happy to finally see the animated ending ('cause trust me... it's one of the best endings in the anime world. And don't trust my list of animes, 'cause i've seen a lot xD)

This episode was perfect, the plot is so developed. Ushio's mother is still alive, his father is badass and he is a master in fight.

We learned some info about the user of the spear, some guys are trained to use it and to defeat THE MONSTER.

The action and the OSTs are awesome in this show, I'm happy that they chose to adapt the OVAs in an anime.

Too short this episode, in recent times, it seems like not enough for me to see more one episode at a time to stop eating. Interesting plot, especially after learning of the impending change of domicile. Perhaps Ushio as a character, I is not yet willing at all, but in the end, we must also take into account many things including the mental age of he. Really beautiful designs and the soundtrack, a show still very enjoyable for me.

A great recovery from the debacle known as episode 6. This is the best episode yet. Great pacing and intensity.

Hopefully people will shut up about this being episodic and monsters of the week now. Good things come to those who are patient.

This is one of the stories that lay long threads. Lots of complaints on the spears, etc. all have resolutions if people would just be patient. Of course, that’s assuming they MAPPA squeeze in the right things in only 39 episodes (not a sure thing given the past couple ones), so best thing is still to read the manga. It doesn’t disappoint.

And just like that we have a legit plot going. I'm excited to finally see Ushio's Mom, and to see this show's chops at being a travelogue as Ushio and Tora begin their journey. I also was questioning how much of a buffoon Ushio's Dad was and this episode thoroughly answered those questions. I'm glad he's got more going on than he seemed like, little predictable but still nice plot turn. I loved the opening scene with the helicopter, and I'm excited to see more of this council of elders being controlled by this tiny woman. I'm kind of curious what kind of role they'll play in the coming episodes. Will they be following him around and causing trouble, or will the series save them for bigger stuff later?

A lot of this episode is just setting stuff up for what seems to be the next phase of the series. It's still pretty exciting though in it's own right. I liked Tora beating down the smug monks for underestimating him. And I like that if it wasn't obvious before, it's clear now Tora is feeling a sense of loyalty to Ushio. More than anything though my main reaction to this is it made me excited to see what happens next.

That was pretty amazing, honestly.

This is the Ushio and Tora I've always wanted to see, from way back when I first saw the incomplete OVA.

Great to see a lot of depth from his father, Tora, and Ushio all rolled together into one episode.

This is why you need a slow buildup that almost feels episodic, because then it hits you hard.
Life can be cruel and unfair. At worst it can traumatize and cripple you. The desire for wanting things to return to the way they were can cost everything and changes nothing. The best way is to keep moving forward, struggle on.
Anger can be powerful but can only get you so far. Let people into your life even if some of them leave you in time.

Fight. Like. Hell. For everything and everyone you love. Always.

Dunno what to think about his mother because his father said that she was beautiful in the past, maybe she was possessed by a demon or something.

His dad can seal youkai.
Dat punch. Now had I did that, my ass would have gotten a whooping.
lol Rocked his jaw.
How nice of Tora to wait for Shigure to finsish his long ass incantation instead of just attacking.
The journey begins.
