I've had this series on my plan to watch list for what seems like forever, excited to finally be starting it. Clannad is one of the few Kyoani series I haven't watched, and as a huge fan of the studio, I'm interested to see how this fits into the company's history; it came out right around the time the studio really started making a name for itself (post-Haruhi, pre-K-On), and boasts the combined efforts of many staff members who would become synonymous with the company (including, I believe, Naoko Yamada's directorial debut). I'm also aware that this series is regarded as one of the better Key adaptations - I'm generally not a fan of VN adaptations, and Jun Maeda's works in particular tend to be hit or miss, but given that the biggest fault in most of his anime is an inadequate number of episodes to do the story justice, I'm cautiously optimistic that Clannad (with its two double-cour seasons) won't have that issue. If nothing else, Maeda's involvement means the soundtrack is guaranteed to deliver.
Full disclosure, I should mention that while I don't know anything too specific about the direction of the story, I've been a part of the anime community long enough to have seen this show come up in various contexts and memes that hint at future plot elements - nothing that should color my opinion too much, but enough to have a general idea of some of the developments I can expect. I don't really know anything about any of the characters, so I'm especially interested in seeing how their dynamics play out.
Right away, I was struck by how much of a banger the OP is. I'm already super familiar with the ED, but I can't recall having heard this OP before. Also, I was pleasantly surprised by the detailed character animation. While Kyoani's reputation certainly precedes them in this regard, I had my expectations set a bit lower, given that this series came out 14 years ago. Great use of color and lighting to set the mood throughout the episode as well. But I think what impressed me most was the sound design. The music was excellent, as expected, but I found the use of background ambience and overall mixing to be outstanding. Voice acting was also strong - I'm not super familiar with a lot of these seiyuu, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. Tomoya's performance definitely reminded me of Houtarou, further reinforced by the casting of his best friend. It seems that Kyoani took a particular liking to this pairing, given their return in Hyouka.
The episode itself seemed quite fast paced, with some of the scene transitions feeling a bit abrupt, and the relationship development between Tomoya and Nagisa feeling especially rushed. I hope that things slow down a bit more as the series progresses. The comedy was definitely on point, reminding me of Angel Beats (which is not surprising, and not a criticism). We got brief introductions to what looks to be most of the main cast - enough time to demonstrate their personality tropes, and not much else. Of course, with two full seasons ahead of us, I have little concern over them being fleshed out more over time. The Fujibayashi sisters give me strong Lucky Star vibes, with the aggressive, (likely) tsundere older sister and the soft-spoken, clumsy younger sister reminding me of the Hiiragi twins (right down to the hair color). Sunohara kind of rubs me the wrong way - his unruly attitude could be endearing, but picking a fight with a girl he doesn't know without provocation just seems a bit much.
I was especially surprised by the scene in which we meet Nagisa's parents. First, because of how young Nagisa's father looks. I'm used to seeing anime moms who look as young as their daughter, but this may be the first time I've seen an anime dad who could pass for a high schooler. But what really caught me off-guard was the stark contrast presented between Tomoya's home life and Nagisa's. I was misled by the early scenes between Sunohara and Tomoya to assume that they both lived in the dorm, which I interpreted as a sign that his own family situation would be irrelevant - I couldn't have been more wrong. Considering the show's ED (as well as some of the things I knew about the series going in), I'm expecting the characters' family dynamics to play a strong role in the series, which is a refreshing change from most high school anime. There's also some weird stuff being hinted at with Nagisa, but I don't have enough information to form an opinion on that just yet.
Anyway, there was a lot I liked here, and a few rough points that I'm hoping will be smoothed out as things progress. Overall, it was a good introduction to the characters and world, and I'm looking forward to seeing what direction things take from here. |
