supermegasonic said: if you guys noticed, in this version, they didnt turn kuripika eyes red. in the original, when hisoka and kuripika were fighting, hisoka came close to kuri, and said somthing to him (like this one) though after hearing what he had to say, his eyes turned into blood red. brooooo...that's sounds so cool. x5exotic said: stormgoddess said: x5exotic said: This is a masterpiece, the 1999 is shit, this is a fact. I'm sorry but your biased opinion and mindless bashing shouldn't be considered a fact. If you think 1999 is shit then you probably haven't seen that much anime. ... oops. I checked. you really haven't. I hope you could come up with a better criticism in the future. I don't really have time to watch every any out there just to have a "good opinion" like you claim, but the reason I put "fact" in there is because i'm sick of people here (Including your comment above" talking as if their opinion is a fact. Last time I checked: THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. Bringing up the 1999 is no different from mentioning Naruto or Bleach, it's trolling. And I'm sick of it "Biased opinion and mindless bashing" Funny you say that. Talk about yourself. I've rewatched the 1999 version about 7 or 8 times...it's probably my all time favorite, but people bitching here are making me hate it more and more. People don't like this series because they it's not like the 1999? It's not supposed to be like it. And if they already know the story and have seen it animated in the original, they can drop it, and come back when the Chimera arc starts. Instead of lurking here JUST SO they can bitch about how much of nostalgia fags they are -.- On the other hand, there are people who dislike the series just because they didn't like it in the first place. That's an opinion. FINALLY JUSTICE IS SERVED. Toto_y_Moi said: punkvolume1 said: After weeks of enduring the drastic changes from the 1999 version, I finally decided to drop this. I don't want to bitch about it but I just want to point out that this version is really half-assed IMHO, BGM that doesn't fit the scenes, art that is too clean that made it look plain, and cutting scenes from the previous version (I am not really sure if those were fillers, but still, why remove them if they make the anime better?). I guess the main reason I'm dropping this show is the voicing for Illumi which made him sound haughty rather than dark (Yes, I'm an Illumi fan). A lot of fans of the 1999 series are extremely impeded by their knowledge of what comes next. This episode followed the manga almost exactly, but those who became fans of the series with the Nippon Animation adaptation, despite all of its changes and flaws, are watching Madhouse's and comparing it to their own favorite. To me, it makes little sense to criticize the newer version--especially when it's been a very great adaptation of the manga (it's ratings and merchandising push show how much Japan is enjoying the show) and conveying everything Togashi intended to do with his manga. What the 1999 series didn't have in the match between Killua and Illumi is the element of surprise. This is the first time in the 2011 series when you realize that Killua is actually a nice character--prior to this episode, you aren't supposed to understand this until now. But in the 1999 series, viewers know this by episode 12 because of a filler (and the director's views on morality). Killua also never mentions killing to be a "bad" thing, only that he's sick of doing it. He doesn't criticize his family's trade during any point in the 2011 series and that's one of the ways how the two characters are different. And for those of you lamenting the loss of Kurapika's fight against Hisoka in the anime, that's actually a good thing from a directorial standpoint. In the manga, their battle is reduced to three panels of non-combative scenes. Satotz only tells you that the two scrap for a little bit before Hisoka whispers in Kurapika's ear and forfeits. The important thing about the Final Phase isn't the fights--it's like Gon said; it's a battle of wills. Finally, the Final Phase is important because of the dialogue. The matches of Gon vs Hanzo and Killua vs Illumi are almost completely nonviolent, but are intended to set up important things about each character that you'll see in episodes to come. This series of chapters in the manga was entitled "Light and Darkness," and one of the manga's cover pages was this: Pay attention to Gon and Killua. Ask yourself why did Togashi have Gon pass and Killua fail? What did they do right in their respective matches and what did they do wrong? Were there other options or alternative solutions? And how would they have solved the matter in a more effective way? those are really great questions. whenever a story that is deeper than my fingernail appears i can't really understand it but i love the depthness of it still. that's why i sometimes look up article that analyze to understand better. Toto_y_Moi said: Shoryuuken said: This was bad to the max. Why show this episode if there was literally no character devolpment, this version is obviously not caring about the bond of the 4 mains. Which was the strongest point of HxH. You've inadvertently stumbled upon the series' intent. But simultaneously, your knowledge of what comes next in the series might be affecting the way you view the material in this one. You seem to be a fan of the 1999 series, so I want to illustrate a key difference between this version and the 1999 series: the protagonists are not all friends yet. In the 1999 series, the four of them work together and interact with each other in every phase. Through teamwork and cooperation, their friendship grows. You could make a pretty decent argument that the four protagonists have already become friends with each other by episode 12 in the 1999 series. But in the 2011 series, have you noticed that Killua rarely interacts with Leorio and Kurapika? This is true in the manga as well. Until the Third Phase, Killua largely only speaks with Gon. The 2011 series inserts a line that explicitly states this--Killua only cares about he and Gon passing. When you see only the trio of Gon, Kurapika, and Killua exiting from the Trick Tower, you might even assume that the group murdered Leorio and Tonpa (Gon ends up grabbing that axe, after all). But notably, Killua--since he's the only one who has done something like that before. Killua does some things that are awfully similar to Hisoka throughout the Hunter Exam arc. Hisoka removes a man's arms for bumping into him; Killua murders two people for doing the same thing. Moreover, the way he toys with Johness' life in Trick Tower scares Kurapika and Leorio. But there's material that allows the audience to actually start to like Killua; his interactions with Gon contradict the murderous aura around him. It isn't until this episode in which his true nature is revealed: it sounds as if Killua's comments about Gon to Hanzo ("Why did you let him win? I'm sure you could have made Gon surrender using numerous methods without killing him, given your skills.") are done in envy of Gon's talent. But it turns out that it isn't Gon's abilities that Killua is jealous of: it's Gon's lifestyle. More than anything, Killua wants to be normal. Gon represents that normality. The manga calls the chapters surrounding Gon, Killua, and Illumi "Light and Darkness." Go to page 80 in the thread for a little more information concerning this. It's a big deal for Leorio to cheer Killua on during his match with his brother--especially since the two didn't like each other much to begin with. Go back to the scenes in which they first interact with each other during the First Phase, or pay attention to Leorio's comments about Killua during the Third Phase. You can actually pinpoint the moments in which Togashi's characters recognize that their initial prejudices were wrong concerning each other. beautiful explanation. although you meant it for one person, i'm glad it was shared with everyone else at the same time. ----- poor killua. my heart went out to him when he said he wanted a friend, and he looked a pit ashamed to do so. the only person to terrify him must be his brother, poor lad. |

The exam rules don't really make any sense lol. They're just kinda there to allow the story to advance I guess. Killua's brother obviously should have been disqualified for trying to go kill Gon. Killua did get really good development here though. Wonder how he'll fit into the story from now on... |

So the Hunters organization wants to keep out "the wrong people" so that is why they don't pass everyone? So says that tall First Examiner. That is the most idiotic thing I have heard from this show. You want to have this goal yet you allow psychotics and assassins to take your Exam. You have tests where Hunter wannabees area allowed to kill each other. how precisely is this a system that doesn't attract the very evil people that this organization wants to avoid? Hell they state flat out that once a license is acquired you can commit pretty much any crime you want and you have blanket immunity! Its absurd! How can any organization like this be allowed to exist in the open? Hell, i don't know what Kurapika was smoking when earlier he talks about Hunters being some virtuous lot, that is the dumbest thing I've heard given the evidence. That crazy clown is certainly proof that if a Hunter comes your way you should run in the opposite direction and not look on them with awe. Unless you are some kind of masochist or something. How does this show have such a high rating on this site anyway? If it was a show about joining a Serial Killers Guild I would respect it more and it would be more logical. But this? A group of people who see people slaughtered around them and just shrug? Insane to give these people such incredible power. |

Also a hunter killing gives him immunity against government and normal people, it doesn't mean other hunters won't chase him if they deem necessary to do so. |

Oh it wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that the organization is actually shady but what doesn't make sense is the world allowing them such power. I suppose I'll keep watching to find out if this stuff is answered but I can't help but find it ridiculous. Also, even the more "moral" characters see people dying all around them in this Exam and are completely indifferent, I have to wonder if this world the show is building if empathy is completely non-existent or just doesn't exist because the writers found the emotion to be irrelevant. Hell Gon's friend kills a dude and he certainly doesn't care nor does anyone else, just gets a shrug just like all the other deaths. Strange world this. |

People seem pissed that the 1999 series keeps being brought up. I don't see problem, since they are related, so they'd obviously be compared. Is that too difficult to grasp? Anyway, filler or not, I didn't like how they cut Kurapika's fight. BUT I still thought this was a great episode! And for some reason I feel really bad for Bodoro :( He seemed like he did his best, poor guy |

My favorite episode by far. Pulled a couple of my heart strings though, over how powerless Killua is to Illumi. |

While it was a good thing that pretty much all of them have been made into Hunters, Killua being the odd one out thanks to the emotional manipulation of his brother was very unfortunate. Him murdering that poor old guy might've ended up being some sort of act of assistance for Leorio but he essentially took out all his anger into a different person who had no relation to their drama. Illumi's eyes suggests that he was brainwashed though. Gon better beat the shit out of Illumi because he had not only screwed over his chances of being a Hunter, he also messed with his own ability to make friends... |

why leorio is not disqualified in phase 5 when killua interfered in his match |

It seems the juice of this exam was when Gon was out of action Maybe he does keep up the brightened upside of the show alive when he's around. |

Fantastic episode. Loved seeing Killua's character and backstory being expanded upon, and loved the twist with Illumi/Gittarackur. Also poor Bodoro, man. |

I'm sorry but this is just retarded. So the pin guy just spouts some bullshit about white haired child not being able to make friends (how positively AWFUL) because he can only kill. Then white hair child goes completely off the rails and kills a random innocent competitor in cold blood for no reason proving pinman COMPLETELY RIGHT. Then Gon goes off and tells PINMAN to be sorry for being a real stand up guy, while white haired gayboy gets off scott free for literal murder. Like oh he just killed someone lel who the fuck cares YOU APOLOGISE TO HIM RIGHT NOW PINMAN I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU!!! This guy is a psychopath, and honestly the "villains" feel more relatable right now. Gotta say, this show is a huge disappointment so far. Rewatched FMAB a couple days ago and it's not even close. While not perfect by any means, FMA beats this show in every single category by a huge margin. |

I thought it was just another shounen like MHA , Naruto, Black Clover, etc but this one unique and DARK shounen |

just when i though that the 5th phase won't show up they summarised the whole thing, kinda like it. kilua really is a messed up character, i believe there will be more development about him. though this arc supposedly end, i read it doesn't yet, probably it will go in the usual shounen way, but i have been wrong, |

So an employee of the hunter's organization gets attacked brutally by a contestant and they all just stand there and stare at him like a bunch of idiots? Seems to be quite a weak organization tbh if they don't even defend their employees from harm. |

So I guess that's the end of the Exam Arc? Didn't expect Illumi to be Killua's brother lol. Also I kinda knew he woulda killed either the archer guy or Boudoro. |

I'll be honest, not the biggest fan of how this all played out. It just felt so cheap for Killua to just do nothing when challenged by Illumi along despite his threat to Gon, then just eliminate himself by taking out some rando illegally. As it stands, this just feels like a pointless detour. |
