Just watched this with my mom. It was a good choice to leave it for Christmas. We liked it.

Damn, this movie is timeless, abundant with so many funny, humorous but still poignant, subtle presences of the nature of faith, and the Christmas spirit. So heartwarming yet still bittersweet.
My only suggestion is the consequence would feel more complete if they showed more interaction between Miyuki and her parents aftermath, but I respect the intention of the director.

what an excellent movie, what a twist, such endearing characters, the facial expressions were so well done, they conveyed so much with just gestures, and the comedy was fucking gold, again, what a great movie, each one of satoshi kon movies are masterpieces and this is no exception

Dull, directionless movie with artificial, performative "character" driven entirely by exaggerated expressions from a cast full of muppets. The histories of the characters were either half-baked or entirely unexplained as well, because this movie was demonstrably preoccupied with having them sharing quirky, snide jabs between them for most of the duration of it.

There was an obvious attempt at some sort of messaging regarding homelessness here, but it was obfuscated by the incoherent lunacy of the characters, whose flippant convictions regarding the events that unfold means there's little incentive for the viewer to care about both the characters and the philosophy of the movie. The homeless guy, transvestite and school girl protagonists all seemed to loathe each other to a ridiculous extreme, having nary a nice word to say between them; yet arbitrarily drop this disdain whenever the plot demands some "tension", typically whenever any one of these characters is in a dangerous situation. Of course, their reasons for being so invested in the circumstances that lead them to these aforementioned dangerous situations are as contrived as everything else.

It sure is Satoshi Kon alright! A journey, an unconventional theme, equally as different yet uniquely beautiful style, and confusion thrown in just when you thought the catharsis had already settled. A classic!

I expected something much more grim and surrealist out of Satoshi Kon, but it delivers an incredibly human and uplifting story that makes you believe in Christmas miracles :)

Bonus points for good transgender representation without trying to sanitize the experience!

Well this my third Satoshi Kon film to bat and it’s another masterpiece I’ve got to say though it’s a lot different from Paprika and Perfect Blue where they were more darker and serious in tone whilst with Tokyo Godfathers on the other hand is a lot more comedic and lighthearted while at the same time still feels like it’s in the style as how Satoshi Kon would do his films. It’s gritty, realistic and focuses on the homelessness side of Japan, often we see a lot of animes indeed be set in Japan but rarely do we see that side to it not to say anything fantastical happening in Japan is inherently bad but it’s just the fact that it serves as a majority of works in this medium. Sure there are realistic elements in some things but you’ll never see an anime where the homeless are the protagonists and with Tokyo Godfathers filling that quota it’s something to behold. The film makes Gin, Miyuki and even have some gay/trans res
representation in Hana very likeable characters as they try to get a baby back to their rightful owners. I was laughing so much at this, my favourite moments are Hana singing a song from The Sound of Music trying to cheer the others up as well as the stuff involving the old man in the tent was a hoot. So many things made me laugh about this film, animation is top standard I mean it should do with the same dude who did the previous two films mentioned behind this, you know he’s going to knock out the park with the stunning visuals alone.

I watched this on Christmas Day and I was having the time of my life with this, probably the one best Christmas themed movies I’ve seen in awhile, incredible voice acting from everybody, it’s not without it’s dramatic scenes and it can be quite insightful at times. To be anybody who’s looking for a film during the Christmas holidays and are fans of Satoshi Kon themselves this is a huge recommendation it’s such a brilliant film. And honestly I think I may have a Christmas tradition here. I’ll give Tokyo Godfathers a 9/10.

This was a great film. Just because your down on your luck doesn't mean you can't have some christmas cheer. The story being centered around a trio of unhoused folks who find an abandoned baby on christmas eve makes for a really good set up. The protagonists are underdogs right from the start. The misadventures they get into trying to reunite the baby with its parents are fun to watch, and the connections they form are done well. Christmas movies need their christmas miracles, so I think things going right is just an undercurrent of that. Hana is a rare trans woman lead, and she is done well. Especially for 2003!
