I actually really liked it. Better than quite a few Hayao movies imo. (I said quite a few, there are still others which are on-par or even high in ranking. Saying because its considered inferior to his works which I don't really agree with) Was a very down-to-earth movie and I liked the whole vibe.
Liked Meru the most but the whole cast was nice. She and Shun make a good couple, after-all they made me say incest is wincest in their case (though ye eventually the sibling theory was debunked, which is good on its own. With them, I wouldn't have minded either way to tell the truth)
And yeah. Very good movie.

Worst Ghibli movie I've ever seen.
Just two kids trying to know if they are sibblings or not so they can have a teenage romance.

Well, this was a very touching little story ! I wasn't fond of the first half as I had a hard time seeing where the movie wanted to go, however the rest was pretty good ! I must admit that I even shed a little tear at some point, the revelations about the different families and friends during the war were just something I didn't see coming and this topic was very well adressed.
Even if it was much less impressive, I liked the side story about the Clubhouse, too. The whole topic of wanting to protect the past is something that really talks to me. Plus, this house was a beautiful one, I'd love to visit a place like this. And I liked how this story about protecting the past was the roots for the main thematic about family to be developed.
I also loved some of the settings, I really liked seeing this old Japanese town at night and I was completely in love with the scenes happening on a boat.
The music, to be fair, wasn't that memorable, however I really like the ending song.
The reason I'm not rating this show higher than 7 is actually because of its characters. They're not bad by any means, but I found them to be very forgettable. I still liked following them, but I would've liked them to have a bit more depth, something that would make them stand out. Here it seemed more like the story was about the background characters no one would've cared about if they weren't pushed at the front. (I'm exaggerating, but you get what I mean.) But they were likeable, otherwise I wouldn't have found the story touching. And in a way, following characters who are just totally "normal" people is pretty refreshing.

(Also, like someone above said, the development of Umi's and Shun's relationship was quite messy, we've never seen actual progression and all of a sudden, we learn they were friends and even considered being lovers. I would've liked to see that be explored better, just like I would've liked to see the characters evolve more throughout the movie.)

I don't know how to feel about this movie. Then that means it won't be included to my masterpiece list. For me, it's neither good nor bad. Halfway through, I was hoping that they will get their hopes up and then in the end, they will be told that they're indeed siblings. A tragic story for the first time in Studio Ghibli. I know it's so bleak but I wanted to have an impact to the story somehow.

Definitely I would recommend From Up on Poppy Hill for youngsters who want to start watching anime!

She got him back. If you understand the characters well enough, you'd know she did!

I probably love this film more than I ever expected to. I heard that this was supposed to be Goro’s reedem film and sure enough it was truly great to watch. Its that vibe that this film gives you. The whole “wow I wish I could go back in this time when things were so much simplier” is what I love so much here. The schools teamwork and making clubhouse feel like a one big family is a great addition and distraction from main plot thing of this film which is family matters and search for the truth.

I see this as another fantastic Ghibli film made by neither of two main directors and probably best of this kind. Goro Miyazaki definitely got the right mindset and vision to make something in future. I personally see his directing more of Isao Takahata than his own father (mostly due to realism in this film and fact that Hayao always creates magical films with things not possible in our human world).

The Ghibli magic is definitely there aswell as animation, music, atmosphere all in the right place.

I think you need to see beyond the lower quality animation for this movie. I wasn't really paying attention until 20 or 30 mins in. I actually started to feel drawn to the characters and the 60s Japan setting. Story about those at sea, and how kids were fighting for keeping culture around during that time was very refreshing compared to the other Ghibli movies. And yes, times were so simple back then.

I was in tears when Shun started ignoring Umi, and the chat with her mother, I was bawling. I think the interactions are very realistic and relatable.

If you're looking for action, fantasy, fluff, you might want to watch something else, but this was a stellar romance/slice of life.

This was so captivating, I fell in love with it right from the start, it was so beautiful.

The adults were all so cool, that chairman was a real solid guy. Shun’s dad was a really cool guy too, though stoic. In its entirety, the characters were all so wholesome. Also that clubhouse was gorgeous & breathtaking right from the start, even with all that dust etc. Everything was so relaxing & idyllic to watch, I really enjoyed this!

but i’ll probably remember over and over again

Ahh, seldom do I watch Ghibli films and perhaps that's why it feels like a special occasion. I've been eyeing this up for years and it was good to watch it at long last. I quite liked the simple, subtle expressions and it was a delight to watch all of it in motion. The whole bit with preserving the building was a hoot and one of my favorite moments had to be the rambunctious antics of the debate. I found myself endeared to Umi as well and noticed how reliable she was for her age.

I have to admit, the romantic developments caught me off guard considering the G rating. I was starting to wonder exactly how this was going to end in wholesome taste. While the resolution was fair enough, I have to admit that anime has had me conditioned thoroughly to the whole "We're siblings but we're not really related to it's okay!" At least I appreciate that this was far more innocent as opposed to a fanservice trope.

Beyond that, I found the whole story surrounding Umi & Shun's fathers to be heartwarming as the waving of the signal flags shows how what their fathers left behind brought those two together. Once again, it's that simplicity that makes it all click together just right.

I quite enjoyed it, mayhaps second only to Whisper of the Heart in terms of what Ghibli movies I like, which I generally don't. But this is one of two or three that I really did enjoy! I liked the subtle feel present throughout the movie. Everything felt cool, slow-paced, relaxing, and yet there was a story underneath. I especially liked Umi's father and his friends, the friendship that tied Umi and Shun's fates together.

Although I'm not really sure what the theme of the movie is and how exactly the fight for the Latin Quarter, the romantic subplot, and the real father of Shun plots were connected, they were each pretty engaging in their own right. And I quite liked Umi. There is of course room to improve, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. I wonder if I could find more about the themes that this movie represented if I read more on it.

An 8/10!

Can't say it was much better then mediocre. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't exactly good either. On the same level as Arriety. It had a surprising lack of creativity for a Ghibli film.
Completely agree.

To put it simply, this Ghibli was LAME.

Nice ending though.
The ending tried too hard to make up for the lame movie.
ye i could say the ending was good, nice climax in the ebd

The anime was beautiful, animation was amazing, to bad it was ruined by the "Even if you were my brother, I'd still be in love you scene.". I don't care what you say, it is weird. Ruined the whole movie.

Exactly, it's so weird! The movie could have gotten rid of the whole incest romance part and it would be infinitely better.

A perfect slice of life movie.

Also, one of the best storytelling in a ghiblis movie. Nothing seems rushed and the end is actually a proper end with stuff solved. Really satisfying.

Easy 10/10

Ah, the 60ies were so nice in JP. Not like these current salty teens dipshits who comment here and dislike everything except their weird fetish.

hmmm for me this was a reluctant 7/10 It started off good w/ the theme of Old V.s New, and I wish they woulda explored that concept further rather than add the part of whether or not the 2 leads are related or not. This was still a nice coming of age story of highschoolers working hard toward a goal. And i loved the chase scene at the end where they run to the ship. But still I felt some parts fell flat, kind alike it was retreading similar groun from other ghibli movies. But it atleast had some interesting characters ^^

i watched it right after i watched umi ga kikoeru, another coming-of-age slice of life by ghibli (different directors however). i rated that the lowest i've rated anything since last year. the contrast could not be any different. this was a wonderful movie, all the touches that were added which told you inexplictly that this was set during the showa era were great. specifically in the 60's, with "ue wo muite arukou". i even wish for a sequel that would never come to fruition, that's rare. so human were these characters, their trials and emotions. expected heavy tragedy and a death at the end, or a 'lost at sea' situation prior to. gotta say i'm pretty glad that did not occur. 10/10!

Breathtaking art, I always love Miyazaki's boats. This whole seaside town is beautiful. Very sweet story with a comforting vibe so I really enjoyed the ride. The song throughout really puts one in time and place.

It was cute!
I feel like the little almost-incest mystery actually made things a little more exciting since there were times where things felt like they were lacking some spice

It would have been nice to see more of Umi and Shun's relationship after finding out the truth behind their fathers, but I guess it's more or less inferred that they get together

I liked this more than expected! Subtle, yet poignant. And wincest!

I thought the ending was a rushed, though. It could've used a little more time with them struggling with their feelings before the mom revealed the truth. And I don't know what was up with the dad's friend at the end, he didn't exactly tell them anything.

9/10
