Another excellent episode, something I became used to on this series. Frieren did an amazing job raising Fern to be the outstanding mage she is.

Wait, Wirbel is in his thirties? Color me surprised.
Fern spamming Zoltraak was lowkey funny, btw.

Overall, another good episode but I was kinda disappointed by the fact it was mostly talk and staring contests than actual fighting. Guess I got misled by the episode's title...
Still really liked what they did with Wirbel's character tho. And here I thought he would be your typical bloodthirsty shounen prick.

The episode was ok, at least the Slice of Life crap is over for the time being since I kinda dislike that genre, it's one of the reasons I was never into this anime in the first place, at least something is happening in the latest episodes so I'm kinda enjoying this anime for the time being.

This anime reached its peak in the demons arc with Aura and her gang in episode 7, that arc was pretty damn awesome, but since then, this anime got kinda crappy again with the boring Slice of Life, at least something is finally happening in the newest arc but it's nowhere as good as the demons arc.

Übel is basically a Sukuna with that cleave and slice magic lol..
The anime missed the opportunity for her to say:
"Stand proud Wirbel, you are strong"
“You should enjoy the little detours to the fullest. Because that's where you'll find the things more important than what you want.”

the normal slow pacing of this series just doesn't suit an exam arc like this because they want to give every meaningless side character a backstory, the pacing is fine for the adventure episodes but now we have been in the same place for 3 episodes and it's starting to drag and with only 8 episodes remaining this isn't the pace the story should be going at unless a season 2 is planned.

The lack of emotion behind these characters is really starting to weird me out. I’m still decently enjoying this show but the lack of emotion is really weird.

Probably why stark is my favourite character, he shows the most emotion and is pretty badass sometimes
@Phantom_373

Oh, in the manga it is even worse lol

At least in the anime, the body movements remind us that they are not statues.

But it is a mage thing. The author could spent 2 seconds and 1 line explaining it like "ah, the exhausting work of the mind to control mana and spells makes some mages lose emotions, especially when they are using magic"

But no, the author never cared about this.

@Rob7 Goddamn, those mages are in the wrong sport, they should stop being mages and start playing poker instead, they will never lose a game with those facial expressions.

I think this was Sousou no Frieren's weakest episode. We were hyped at the end of last episode that there'd be plenty of fight scenes, but most of the episode's spent on talking. Of course it's not uncharacteristic of this anime, but with promises of some substantial battles, this episode kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. I look forward and expectantly to next week's episode.

The rivalries are building, and things are heating up...

It was nice seeing a lot of the characters' perspectives this episode, from Fern, Ubel, Wirbel, Denken, and of course Frieren. There were some solid action scenes, but this episode was quite a dialogue-heavy episode, which made the episode feel a bit longer than it usually feels like. A lot of these characters have very calm demeanours, and were cunning and strategic, while not resorting to all-out violence either, which was nice and refreshing to see. I will admit that things are moving a bit slower than I expected, and I'm not sure if I'm enjoying this second half as much as the first, but we should be in for some amazing action up ahead.

While carrying his 2 injured party members who are now "out" of the fight, Wirbel sees a Stille in the tree in front of him, and BOINGO, Luck is a skill.

That ... is poetic justice.

this episode sucked. Too much talking and not enough action. Just a literal cliff - hanger.

waiting for next episode..

Dropped from 10 to 9. Felt like filler. I agree with smilo up there, this episode dragged on so hard. So much time wasted we could've gotten into half the next episode without it..

@Phantom_373

This is one of my favorite things about Frieren honestly. Why would battle hardened mages or warriors be at all surprised some of their kind do not make too much reservations about killing.

And honestly, there are too many battle-oriented anime where characters go "Eeeeeehhhh" "AAAAAAahhhh" "Sonna hazu ga nai.." "Bakayarooooo!" "Bukkorosu!!!" "Hidosugiru 😭" "Masa ka!!!" "Nani mono da!" "Saseru ka?!" "Fuzakeru na!" "Nametenja nee zoooOO!"

and other brain melting statements ad nauseum, I'd rather a show with a solemn approach where fighters act poised and dignified, instead of soying out over every little thing happening on the battlefield, as if that's anything remotely normal.

@Scootboi so you don’t want to know why exam’s are held and what are the privileges of the first class title? And who organises these kinds of exam?

And you want them to show 2-2.5 chapters in just 12-15 mins?

@Scootboi they didn’t explained about privileges before this episode and who was that Elf in the OPs all this time. But if you want fight then next episode and 2nd exam which will happen after the 1st exam will have some action.

It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

Is it just me or this episode doesn't feel as intricately made as the rest of the series? Character just spouted out dialogue for no reasons or any natural transitions like Wirbel suddenly, in the middle of the fight, just talked about his backstory to his enemy out loud. Or characters do illogical stuff like Wirbel just blindly trusted Fern for absolutely no reasons whatsoever, when he is a supposed battle-harden mage. The dialogue writing is horribly mediorce as it is filled with characters stating the obvious, talking about their backstories, or just spewing exposition when it could be shown instead.

I absolutely love this series but this episode to me felt like a massive fluke and most of the recent episodes felt like I am watching an average fantasy anime. Hopefully, the show can recover and deliver us a satisfying finale.
@2Weeb4U2be i agree with the first point, i don't think that the backstory was necessary (i just skip it).
But, when you talk about him believing fern for "no reason", i don't really agree with that, i mean even if he didn't believe in fern, what the best he could do at his situation than leaving?
He can't just stand still for eternity,
And he can't just start fight with fern, and i don't think he's stupid enough to just start fight with a mage that win against the best mage he know, and he can't fight both fern and the other girl(if forget he name) because if he died then both of his friend will lose, so what really is the point of him staying there, either he believed in fern on not he would have to leave asap.
And i don't it's really bad dialogue it's just not as good as the other dialogue in the series.

This might be a dumb question but while Frieren and Fern were taking this exam, where did Stark go and what did he do? I miss him...

The 'fight' between Wirbel and Ubel was interesting, I like both of them and I'm glad no one died between them, hahaha. But Fern! I thought she really killed Ehre... heh, what a liar~

That glasses guy trick was kind of simple but it saved him from many threats. I like how he's always aware of his surroundings and doesn't trust anyone so he won't die easily.

Now, Frieren vs Denken... who knows who will win? What a long wait for another week!

Oh, so that's how Fern's team was able to get the Stille. It was mostly her mana control and her spell to bind. Her teammates surely do have their qualities unlike the other guy's team who really didn't stand much of a chance. And just when they were going to be eliminated and reminiscing about the past, lady luck decided to give them another chance.

Meanwhile, Frieren's Stille was stolen and the old guy seems like he would pose a threat. Nonetheless, she barely reacted to the stealing so she's probably scheming something. Hopefully none of the girls get killed by that other guy (so many names I can't remember).

This show gives you an epic mage battle and knows how to hype you up for the next one right after. Wirbel really did not want to give Ubel that death wish she was looking for. Contrasted pretty well with how much Ehre was talking his sleaziness up!

@Phantom_373 - finally someone else is bothered by this. I get the main character being a little emotionless, sinse she's literally called "freezing", but why is everyone Thomas Shelby now? Even if the author thiks it's cool, they shoud tone it down a bit. It's starting to get annoying.

Wirbel's spell is kinda overpowered. It's like the better version of Frieren's spell.

I wonder if Laufen would have been able to kill Frieren or any of the girls if she didn't just want to steal the bird. She only needed one shot and it didn't seem like any of them had any idea what to expect before she acted.

I really like how the characters are not so typical and predictable as other anime.
