Best episode in Fruits Basket so far

The biggest issue I had with Fruits Basket is how eternally cheerful Tohru was; that normal people can't be like that and it sets up terrible expectations for young girls that they would be lovable if they acted that way. This episode comes as a breath of fresh air, showing how difficult it was for Tohru to maintain her persona. Can't wait to see how her relationship with Kyo develops.

This episode really did wonders for the Kyo x Tohru ship, while showing that they still have much to overcome with their respective psychological hurdles around Tohru's mother and her death. Everything from start to finish was executed beautifully in another of this show's absolute best episodes today. Not even Kagura's unfunny comedy could bring the rest down, such is how good it was.

That's not how loving someone works. Sometimes they don't have to do anything special; just be by your side when you need them.

Yeah... in real life people also don't turn into animals due to a curse.

Am I the only one bothered that such important things about Tohru's past are only shown this late ? Like all the stuff with her father. That imply so much in her personnality and story, and it is just dropped like that after 50 episodes.

He has helped her probably more than the rest of the Sohmas. Whenever she is upset, he was always the one to comfort her. She has never shown her emotional side around the others like she has Kyo. Kyo is the one she feels most comfortable around that she can just cry when she feels like it around him. He was also the one who helped make her better when she was sick by cooking food for her and stuff. Makes sense she likes him the most.

It was an amazing episode. I went through so many emotions during this episode. There was a lot to unpack in this episode such as Tohru's feelings for Kyo, the wake up call for Tohru to get her priorities straight and we got a little insight on Tohru's past and why she acts like the way she does. By far every episode this season has been good just like the other seasons. Looking forward to watching things unfold.

That was a big episode for Tohru and Kyo. She finally admitted that she loves him and we learned that she acts so polite because it was her desparate plea to keep her mom from leaving her. That stuff feels real. This series does such a great job depicting trauma, abuse, and loneliness.

That being said, it felt like the pace was too fast this episode. It constantly bounced around between characters and places with little to no introduction or cohesion. It also made it feel like Tohru was crying the entire episode, which was a bit much.

The ending was wild though, looking forward to that getting explained.

A story needs to explain how characters fall in love because that's how ALL fictional works work. That's literature 101. What the other person said is trying to apply irl logic to anime, I used the same absurd example to show how bad their argument was.

Bleh I really the episode but I am concerned about the increasing pace along with rumors about this being 13 eps and comments from manga readers with removed content. Why bring an anime so far just to cram the ending? Feelsbadman

Finally Kyo and Tooru acepted their feelings. Tooru acknowledged her feelings of love of Kyo. For me, Kyo know about this, but... BUT...

It is time to watch more drama, more tears and more traumas. Will our main couple have their happy ending?

Atta boy Kyou! It's time for you to make your move!

Shigure seemed especially cruel this week, but at least the truth is finally starting to be revealed. He believes that the zodiac curse will finally break. That leads to a lot of possibilities for the ending.

And finally Torhu finally reveals her feelings! I was pulling for Kyou this entire time, but I prepared myself for a non-romantic ending or her choosing Yuki. I feel so vindicated.

One thing that was gnawing on me was the whole Tohru's mom and Kyou thing. Then they brought it up right at the end when both Kyou and Tohru started freaking out. We got a little light shed on the past today, but still questions that needing to be answered.

We're in the end game now boys.

Have you watched a romance show before? You don't need a play-by-play breakdown of everything that made one character fall in love with the other.

Damn what a speech that Shigure had but it was true. Watching Tohru's feeling of despair was really hitting me hard, ngl i cried a bit when she was talking about her father.

Unexpected ending so Kyo had to do something with Tohru's mom death since before she died she said "Ill never forgive you"

It is just as absurd as their reasoning, you can't apply real life logic to a media, obviously if we are talking about a good one of course.

So what is this non-real life human way in which a "good media" portrays love (which is a real life human emotion)?

That final scene left me speechless. Does it mean Kyo remembered something about Tohru's mother or perhaps it just brought up what happened to his own mother? Maybe that's why, even though we see Tohru's saying what she said, maybe that's something Kyo thought his own mother would say?

So intriguing!! Wanna know more!

Also I'm happy to see Kagura on this episode, I really like her and I'm glad she's moving forward her relationship (obsession?) with Kyo.

Shigure's just so cool when he's evil hahaha though he spoke the truth, poor Tohru, it was just too much for her on one episode :(

You have watched the show from the beginning right? Tohru has been in love with Kyo since before she chased after him when he transformed at the end of the first season... also, if look at the chemistry between them in scenes as the story goes on you can tell there’s something there. The way Kyo treats her as well is different from how anyone else treats her. If you’ve missed the clues, I suggest going back.

That was amazing. The whole episode was a tear jerker and explained alot about the Soma situation currently and Tohru’s personality. Dang that girl has a lot of trauma.

I watched the ending like 10 times trying to figure out what Kyo’s part in Kyoko’s death is. I came up with a few theories but I will have to wait till next week 🙃

This is the first episode that made me cry this season! Most tv shows/ movies never include how guilty a person feels living their life while a loved one has passed away - Tohru can't fully embrace her love for Kyo because she feels guilty that doing that means forgetting her mum. It would probably help her to know that Kyo knew Kyoko.

It's so clear now how much Kyo & Tohru love each other but there are so many things that are holding them back. It's inevitable that they'll work through those things because they just care about each other too much not to move forward together, like how tender & compassionate Kyo was with Tohru when they were talking about her dad. They have such a beautiful relationship.

How on earth do they manage to pack so much into just one episode?

Shigure's reveal to Tohru, Tohru's grandfather's regrets, the trauma she experienced, her whole backstory, her feelings towards Kyo, and hints at something about poor Kyo-kun we don't know.

Any other show would feel rushed as hell getting all this into one episode, but Fruits Basket consistently delivers this much content through sharp writing and emotional gut punches. I'm impressed.

Um that was me and yes, you CAN apply IRL logic to anime....most people do.

Because in the end, anime characters represent people.

Watch me do it with Fruits Basket in a different situation:

Real children are traumatized when real adults abuse them.

The anime children in Fruits Basket were traumatized when anime adults abused them.

...get it?

And how does the story not explain it?? We had like two whole seasons of built up, kyo has been shown to push Tohru to be more selfish and open up about her problems, to be the first one to notice when something is wrong with her and tohru has shared a lot of vonularable moments with him

Her feelings did not came out of nowhere, there are hints in s2.. And the reason for not showing more is as explained this episode because of her mom

So yea.. the answer is within the show

People in some other shows fall in love for far less

Even if I liked the ship, the conclusion cementing them as completely platonic but close was so mature I wouldn't even be mad, but even past that, nah Yuki just doesnt carry the same emotional weight as Tohru's love interest as kyo, but he absolutely carries that emotional weight with Machi. Theres actual contrast and ways to bounce off each other.

So Tohru finally truly realised and expressed her feelings for Kyo, even if it was to Rin.

Honestly, Tohru's paternal family are horrible. We already saw her aunt and cousin, but the relatives at her father's funeral... Why would you say something so horrible? And why would you say it straight to the child's face?

But bless Tohru's grandfather. Turns out he wasn't forgetful all this time. He realised exactly what Tohru needed, and that was for Kyoko to keep existing. Her father's family may be horrible people, but her grandfather certainly isn't.

After two seasons slowly exploring the cracks in Tohru's personality, we finally get to see what's in them. And how sad it was to see. The way she spoke, born out of a desperate attempt to make sure her mother didn't leave her... seeing her practicing speaking like her father in that apartment alone was one of the most painful scenes I've ever seen.

But that ending... I wonder what happened... Did Kyo accidentally cause Tohru's mother's death? Or maybe she saved him? Damn, still so many questions.

Also, embarrassed Rin at the start of the episode was really cute with how red she was at being unable to accept Tohru's feelings of relief and worry as her friend lol

Why would it be unnecessary since there has been build up for it from the beginning?

We've known about Kyo being invovled with Kyoko's death since Season 1. In S1 E10, Kyo experienced a brief flash of Kyoko's dead body and took off into the woods. Tohru went after him and he sat huddled on the ground for a bit. Then in S1 E14 they went to visit her mother's grave and Hana stated that Kyo's waves were in turmoil and screaming. We also saw more flashes of Kyoko's dead body in various episodes throughout Season 2 as well. We've also seen Kyo experiencing nightmares in at least one episode of S1 or 2.

The brief flashes he saw were quick, brief, and static-like in appearance, because Kyo was not allowing himself to properly think about and engage with the memory. Now that he saw the hat, the memory forced itself to the surface, very clearly and fully, since Kyo is suffering from a PTSD attack.

This is a very necessary plot point, since Kyo has been struggling with it since the start.
