Quite derpy animation this round; I guess they blew all their budget on the previous episode.
No matter, I'm still pleased with the Mary x Haru I got.

The episode did well to feed into the chill theme that they've created for it since the beginning. I for one enjoyed watching Haru and his group just doing all the mundane everyday life things that would happen in a "real" setting.

Seeing Haru interact with Mogzo, Mary and Shihoru does give the vibe that he's beginning to make an effort to understand and get closer to his party members. And the contrast between each individual's interests was great in providing an inkling as to how each of their characters tick. I really liked the food Mogzo made.

As fun as Barbara's scene was to watch, I felt it a bit pointless with her basically holding conversation whilst pinning Haru's hips to the ground like that. Don't tell me the "Spider" skill consists of straddling and pushing down on your enemies genitalia whilst boring them to death.... that would be one of the dumbest skills ever.

Next week seems to be a bit more interesting what with new monsters and a new arena to play in.

Oh, and loved the insert songs. I'm surprised that they upped their game by doing two this episode.

Did anyone catch the end card? I wonder why that Goblin would be thinking of Yume....

better slow paced and character developing, then rushed and confusing.
I really think they made the right call with the slow pacing and emphasis on the world around them.

Though the next episode titled "I'm not fit to be a leader" Sounds worrying....

Barbara a besto. We need so much more of her. C'mon Haruhiro, make her yours!

Nice world building episode. I really like the architecture of the city, so it's always nice to see more. I really like the detail of the flickering lights through windows during the Haruhiro and Mary scene.

Nice to see Mary progressing though.

Very nice music too, during the bar scene we got this nice jazz/blues, and then the beat boxing during Barbara's training.

Well since the quick blurb after the ED of this episode includes the title of next week's episode called"I'm not fit to be a leader," one can only assume that Haru has a mental crisis and doubts his abilities to run the party. Possibly due to one of them almost getting killed or some serious mishap.

Just started watching...
It's so funny how after 8 episodes of bullshit they decided to make a filler episode to worsen the anime...
Yeah, now that I finished it they did worsen the anime (-_-) That "training" in the second half was so cringy, I barely watched it. Beatbox music was so out of place, Haruhiro was just getting beat up by his trainer, so I'm not sure if he learned anything. The whole "sitting on haruhiro" scene was disgusting. Like really disgusting...

I find it amusing when people say the slow pacing is okay because it's spent on character development. Really, what character development? All you know about Ranta is that he's arrogant and kind of a jerk. Moguzo is good at cooking and gentle. Yume is kinda a lovable bumpkin. Shihoru is quiet, likes to watch the sunset and can now feed pigeons. Where's the meaningful character growth? Haruhiro is the only one only because he's the main and had to become group leader. That's what makes the pace annoying for some of us. It's not giving us anything substantial for our time. What it comes down to it, it really is an advert for the light novel. Want to know more? Go read it.

They skipped the orc invasion for this? Really? And what about Haruhiro getting a sense of competition for the first time, instead of it all being about survival, as usual? We get it, the anime's trying to be as "realistic" as possible, but come on...

From an anime-only standpoint the episode was okay. I'm getting really sick of these insert songs, and it's hilarious how there are so many people that regard this as the apex of writing. Still, I am interested in how exploring the mines goes.

It's sad that this anime only started picking up the pace after this episode. Really they could have probably adapted 3 or 4 of the light novels but instead chose slow pacing and it may not even get through all of the 2nd book.

It's sad that most of you people have a adhd and you can't enjoy this show. Most of anime og this type are full of action and other bullshit, so go watch them and leave this one for people like me and other, searching for something more.

Most of the time these days I just see people railing at other people for wanting their fantasy oriented series to be something more than just people talking at each other and the pacing of the story slower than molasses. Considering this just seems to be what's popular with anime nowadays though I'm not surprised it's happening more and more but this getting holier than thou towards anybody that doesn't prefer such an approach thing and would like a little more going on than just talking is getting really fucking old in the community. Anyway this sort of thing is just one of the reasons I've switched to watching more hour long Netflix shows lately since they actually have time to do shit in an episode and for multiple subplots to play out and develop.

Seriously though not everybody thinks that the pitch perfect pace for every anime needs to be absolutely glacial so that people can stare at the scenery or a girls body or learn about the all important "mundane" things. It's a trend that's been around long enough in anime that people need to stop pretending that it's unique, superior (and makes them so) and special and that most anime are just non-stop manic action set-pieces that are inferior by default for not just focusing on talking and music. If anything I'd say lately that shows that focus on just endless talking and minimal developments are becoming more the norm and while it was fresh in the days of things like Aria it's not so much now and not everybody is going to like that approach nor does it mean they have ADHD.

See the Timmy 2000 episode of South Park with the Great Gatsby reading in it if you want satire of this whole you have ADHD if you can't stay focused during really droning stretches of material.

It's not about that, it's merely about it being slow paced and centered around talking period as opposed to the dialogue being especially interesting (just like how people think that the dialogue in Monogatari is riveting while I think it's absolutely unfocused nonsense) or purposeful which is in big time in the 2010's as a result of the explosion of influence from the light novel scene and "slice of life". There are also people that genuinely think it makes them look more clever if they profess to appreciate it and find it superior to "all those shonen action shows that just focus on fighting and power levels". I just see this sort of trend all the time and this whole I'm better than those Narutards or mainstreamers that only watch stuff like Attack on Titan stuff and it's really really dumb.

Basically if I want to watch a show with lots of dialogue that's also very intriguing and builds characters or sub plots I'll probably just stick to Netflix cause when it comes to anime it's fluff like 75% of the time, especially with light novel adaptations where yeah pretty much it's often done this way as an advert for the LN which half the time when I've bothered to read one there's an inner passive voice that LN authors love to use as a device that handles most of the exposition and character development via the male leads private observations on events but is often cut from anime adaptations due to the format leaving just the dialogues and director to figure out how to handle any sort of action or not. One such show I know that didn't cut the LN passive voice out entirely was Haruhi which arguably benefited from it otherwise literally all the exposition would be gone.

And yeah for whatever reason as one person pointed out in this thread a lot of fans especially new to anime that mostly stick to the seasonal trendy stuff seem to really think of LN style writing as the apex of general writing don't they?

LOL. You can have a good gauge of a person's maturity level based on the posts here. Most who complain seem to want One Punch Man in plate armor SMH

IMO, this anime is very well done, and IDK why some are so fixated on it being just 12 episodes, when it's pretty obvious that they intend to have more after (granted the anime has to be received and sell well first), even if the manga doesn't go that far. It's not the first time an anime is uprooted from a manga to take off on its own.

The anime did step a bit away from the manga, but it's a refreshing take on the whole fantasy genre that's frankly been looking like one is the clone of another, starting from SAO. While all those stand on their own merits, and I did like most of them, when you watch each in succession over the span we had for the past 2-3 years, they all feel somewhat the same, mostly heroes with mid to high level power just going through motions from one fight to another.

No one really tackled the travails of low-level characters and their mundane lives, and I personally was thinking about it when, lo and behold, Grimgar came around. It's been great. The nuances and world-building alone is a treat, and it's easy to see this can be taken far. I play tabletop RPGs and the storyline of the lives of these characters showcase the real fun of role-playing, which is character development, and not super powers and taking down the Demon King after episode 5.

Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, like I always mention to people, Japanese make their stuff primarily for the consumption of the Japanese audience. After that, they target the Korean and Chinese markets. It rarely goes beyond that, even if it's the United States, since the cultural differences open up works to criticism without context. Case in point: you don't see many works such as Grimgar make it into Adult Swim NA, where action anime dominate their lineup. Why bother, when you won't make back the costs of localizing your content?

We're lucky that their art forms are of such a high level, in this case, entertainment-wise, that people put in the effort to translate works for the rest of the world to enjoy.

But the point is, it's unlikely the disapproval and disappointment uttered on this thread and everywhere else not in Japan matter to the creators, not when you people aren't even part of the intended audience in the first place. I appreciate the fact that I'm someone on the outside looking in, and am grateful for the experiences I would otherwise miss, had there been no avid translators doing what they do.

So you made an account literally just to whine at random people here and feel better about yourself? Honestly I just don't understand how people can see things in such utterly simplistic terms. Like why is it always ALWAYS OPM action and no character development versus just talking and "deep" storytelling. Why are the two mutually exclusive or whatever point it is people are trying to make in this gross simplification and dichotomy. Do people even understand what I'm trying to get at or am I just going to be called a hater and wasting my time because I swear I'm not trying to be arrogant but I'm getting a sense this topic goes well over peoples heads in terms of understanding cause again people just see it all in such simplistic and arbitrary terms on MAL. Like do people think action, natural progression of events and arcs and character development/dialogue can't mix ever period and that you're only options are defeating the enemies with brute force or shooting the shit and reminiscing with each other with absolutely no inbetween.

And seriously again making an account just to pontificate at people. M A Fucking L personified. So many new posters lately with even bigger mouths, egos and strawman type arguments delivered with all the pompousness of a youtube ranter than the already present and pretty bad community. Amazingly the site looks like it's going to get even worse as a community this year.

Tell me about it. People don't even know what they are talking about, they're just trying to feel smug and superior to what they think is predominantly popular in the anime community in action shows like OPM or Attack on Titan when as I keep insisting that is a massive oversimplification of so many things on so many levels and just some people trying to act superior in taste and intellect without actually understanding anything. If they were actually as clever as they think they'd realize it's not that simple and arbitrary.

This isn't really the only show you'll see this sort of hard polarization with either, it comes up with a lot of LN adaptations where there's criticism of pacing and writing style by people (often fairly justified) which is usually just a result of the original format usually being written by extremely poor authors who otherwise would probably be writing web novel fan fiction and often have gotten there start doing exactly that. This is just how LN adaptations often like to do things because it saves budget and most LN authors just know how to write incidental dialogue to pad out their books and meet deadlines.

Loved this ep, I really liked the relaxed tone compared to goblin fighting. Beautiful scenery at the start when Haruhiro was exploring. Mary also looked stunning when she's just plain happy, the scene where they're both sitting at the table enjoying a drink and the views was my favorite.

2nd half had the domination play by Barbara, I enjoyed her performance way too much. And finally, when Mary broke down from hearing Cyrene Mines, I genuinely felt sorry for her. I feel like she's come a long way from being the moody girl she appeared to be.

It cuts both ways. If people think I'm retarded or have ADHD because I prefer my shows to show a little more agency and things to be interested about like ongoing subplots, character relationships from time to time then too bad, I enjoy shows that pay attention to those sorts of things regardless of whether it's done via lots of dialogue or action set pieces or whatever. People need to stop thinking that one has to be mutually exclusive and that one is better than the other and showcases smarter and more clever writing by default is the point, but of course it gets missed cause everybody thinks the world revolves around them and their entitlements lately.

I got into anime because it used to be surprisingly decent at those sorts of things on average for something that is kind of produced for the teen to young adult demographic and there was lots of it coming out. Now that that doesn't seem to be the case much anymore and it's debatable that the average season of anime has much of a story too it there's a lot of questions to be asked.

Also I just an example, I like mecha/sci-fi anime a lot, but fuck if it feels like allowed to publicly these days cause they're all just trainwrecks and toy commercials and nothing more to most people who see every mecha show as being like Michael Bay's The Transformers series. If fans of grinding slow paced "visual medium" anime feel that they have it tough these days from the community than I'd say it's time to grow a pair cause guess what, it's not just you. I mean nobody gives a shit about anybody else or their tastes and the fact that they're going to differ naturally in this community anymore. There's just zero respect between anybody and everyone expects everything to revolve around and kowtow to their specific tastes and likings and if people don't agree that x show is a masterpiece they just label them haters or plebs or whatever and it's so fucking stupid. If that weren't the case we wouldn't even have a fraction of the problems we do now with people being all defensive about everything and pontificating masterpiece this trainwreck that all the time largely based on ridiculously harsh genre biases and pacing/focus at least in theory.

Anyway again if you ask me and I've felt this way for a while it just seems like the holy grail of anime now as seen by the modern community is that show where it just feels like almost little is happening but easily could be, where commercial sensibilities trump everything else but hey at least it looks kind of distinct style wise and the character designs are eye-catching....sort of. People act like this is some kind of emerging and refreshing trend but I'd argue it's been like this as long as light novels and production committees have held heavy influence over anime and very specific to that subset of late night shows. Again this is probably going way over peoples head here so I'll call it a day. Like I don't know I just get the sense people don't care or even comprehend what I'm saying because I'm not telling them what they want to hear so much as what I see and believe and that's probably a bad thing by default to them.

TL;DR: What some people are seeing as a refreshing and commercial approach I just see as sheer commercialism's holding influence over more and more shows. That is not a good thing to me.

Chill episodes can work, but that was too chill. In the first half we got about two minutes of worthwhile dialogue/scenes and the rest was wasted screentime (short of letting us see more of the city). The tavern scene and aftermath was excellent, but the scene with Haru and the master was pointless fan service and overall unnecessary (if this was an ecchi romcom I'd be more forgiving, but it isn't).

Each episode (and even each scene) is so hit or miss to me. They do characterization beautifully one scene/episode and then waste time and potential the next.

Thats the problem almost every other episode is a chill episode and the episodes that are action packed are half chill episodes. Compare 8 episodes of this show to Gundam IBO this show is pretty much the 2010s version of .Hack/Sign

That Mary & Haru scene was so adorable damn :3
But still Haru x Yume <3
I'm gald that they had some time to relax and think about everything, so now they are planning to go to that cave where Mary's friends died, i smell bad stuff is coming xD
I love their city, those views are simply amazing!

Even Mary became a very likable character :)
It's sad that most of you people have a adhd and you can't enjoy this show. Most of anime og this type are full of action and other bullshit, so go watch them and leave this one for people like me and other, searching for something more.

Agree so much with you, those views are enchanting and i'm starting to like Mary more and more.
You're right, i commented something similar in the previous episode, why do people hate this anime for being for being slow pace? It's so pretty and the development of the characters & story is great. In this type of animes, a few fights are enough, this anime doesn't need fights 24h a day, the point of anime is different. I'm loving this anime for being like this. 10/10 ;)

I hope Mary can overcome the death of her party.
