A near half-century later, we're blessed with yet another classic work that's based off author Lucy Maud Montgomery's 1908 novel: Akage no Anne a.k.a Anne of Green Gables, the 2025 remake by The Answer Studio, the studio's 2nd modern work after Tower of God Season 2, this one is a bona-fide classic since Nippon Animation and director Isao Takahata's adaptation way back in 1979 (that's 46 years ago).

The 11-year-old Nova Scotian of Anne Shirley, raised in an orphanage asylum, and sent Cuthberts to work at their Green Gables farm in Avonlea, Prince Edward. The facial-freckled red-haired girl being full of wonder, it left husband Matthew in awe of her, that he can only glimpse in silence of her enthusiasm.

When Anne is brought to the doorstep of the Cuthberts, Matthew's wife Marilla can only dissipate in shock that there's no boy from the orphan asylum. Instead, she quickly assumes Anne (written with an "e") for the night instead and warrants Mrs. Spencer to bring her back to whence she came from the next day. As expected, Matthew would see Anne as being entertainment for Marilla, but she's adamant on sending her to Mrs. Spencer's way, after the many foster houses she was being sent to, which one by one, was sent back each and every time. The approach to Blewett forced Marilla to force her hand to take back Anne seeing the near abuse from the psychotic woman herself.

The ED is freakishly good, NGL.

For sure, this is NOT the same The Answer Studio quality as seen in ToG S2, this is MUCH different, and a vibrant one for its story thematics. This will be a great history lesson in animated form.

I guess Saturday evenings are just the evenings of remakes lol. This makes two with YAIBA having just aired minutes before this one. Don't get it mixed up though, the two really couldn't be more different. One's your sakuga shounen, an here we got.. a sakuga drama..? Wait who's the studio for this again... because no way this is the same studio just put out THE TOG S2 right??? RIGHT???

Anyways, gorgeous visuals aside, story is pretty straightforward, our main girl Anne Shirley gets adopted by these two elders... who thought she was supposed to be a boy in order to mend the fields, but the orphanage kinda fucked up and sent them Anne ofc. To which I gotta say, was kinda crazy that obaasan just started dissing girl.. right IN FRONT OF HER. She had all the rights and more to bawl her eyes out. I mean, poor girl really thought for a second there that she got adopted... :(

She's lucky that they let her stay awhile, but alas, she has to go. I mean, these two are old man, only reason they reached out to the orphanage was TO get help... not HELP a little girl out. It's sad, but the truth. But with the power of anime, one sob story and some FUCKING ABUSE (???) later, and all's forgotten because obaasan changes her mind after hearing Anne's little story and decides to raise her as one of their own.

It FEELS like a very old story or anthology, that's for sure. And so far, somehow, Answer Studio is doing a good job of remaking it at least from what I'm seeing. So yeah, I'm in!

Well, Anne’s full of energy and overflowing with curiosity.

I don’t see anything wrong with Marilla wanting a son, and Matthew’s already taken quite a liking to Anne. I’m sure she’ll have a great life with these two as her parents.

That Mrs. Blewett is just a horrible person—thankfully, Marilla has a kind heart, even if she originally wanted a boy.

It’s a really interesting story. Looking forward to seeing how it all progresses!

A little rushed, so some scenes didn't get to sit and get absorbed. It felt a lot like how Anne talked, just jumping from one thing to another. But other than that, I liked it a lot. It was cute, the music and the art style are cozy, and they made PEI's non-coastal areas look good for once.

Here's hoping we get a new Emily of New Moon adaptation, too. I rewatched the live action adaptation and as much as I loved it, it'd be cool to see a version that doesn't give the main character a shapeshifting cousin or have the leads fight Satan.

Just finished the first episode and I love it! While the pacing was fast (Seriously, they blitzed through four chapters of the book in just one episode) and didn't let everything have time to just sit and get absorbed, I still enjoyed it. The characters' personalities are in tact, and I love that the English subtitles actually bothered to use passages from the book for the dialogue. Kudos to whoever translated this. I will admit, I'm not a fan of the overusage of close-ups and the fish eye lens, along with the obvious CGI horse and truncating Anne's history when she's talking to Marilla. Still, I'm excited to see the rest of this!

Good episode, they tried to stay as faithful to the classic as possible. It doesn’t have that artistic charm, but it’s still decent, even with the more modern design. I didn’t really like how Matias was designed, and I missed his more timid mannerisms — they add a lot of charisma to his character. And Marilia’s stricter demeanor was kind of lost too; she doesn’t show her sentimental side so openly right away, but it’s nice to see her like this and how Anne eventually changes her.

If it ends up being even a third of what the classic was, it’ll be a great anime. Despite the rushed pace, Anne is an incredible character — one of my all-time favorites.

This series has that 'old anime' vibe in it, with an sparkling and innocent girl who meets as a wonder in everything she sees in the world, something that adults like me has lost all interest in or just don't care anymore. Anne Shirley feels like a purifying anime, my soul says I need it so I'm going to keep this one.

Welp, I just found my favourite of the season up to this point. I watched the original when I was a kid so I don't remember it well, but I remember that I loved it.
This one gave me good vibes from the get-go.
And the visuals are gorgeous. Nice chara design, nice animation... and incredible backgrounds.

The new remake of Akage no Anne surely has much faster pacing and I think with this pacing they could made this into 26 episodes anime and would be fine. While the art and aesthetics of the old anime is unmatched, the new anime has a particular modern sensibilities to it like the camera angle and the way the characters react too. I will definitely miss the narrator from the old anime lol. No matter how old or new take on the anime, the story and the characters especially Anne are what made the show so damn loveable and we'll regarded to these days. Yeah, back when she's still very young, Anne was hyperactive, full of imagination and talkative. How much I miss her antics too in the old anime and I glad she's still one of the best girl in anime be it 70s or nowadays.

Insufferable main character. Probably the first time I see a character that repulsive while it is obvious she hadn't been intended that way. I haven't read manga but I assume she feels much better there.

I remember putting the original on hold 4 years ago since I was busy at that time and although the pacing is faster than the original (as expected) because it is modern version, still it is enjoyable as hell. The voice actors are also doing a good job.

I never watched the 1979 anime, which I know is considered a classic, or read the 1908 book. I started watching this cause it looked interesting, and I'm already loving it. Anime adaptations of non-Japanese media that are this old aren't that common these days.

Anne Shirley is definitely an interesting character. Didn't expect her to talk so much lol. But almost everything she says is interesting or is at least fun to hear. The VA is doing a good job. I thought Marilla would be the stereotypical evil stepmother from Disney movies, but she kinda does have a heart. That was refreshing to see. But why is she living alone with her brother tho? That's pretty sus. Tho I imagine both of them were married at some point and just lived together in a combined household which was very common when this was written. Maybe both of their spouses passed away before they could have children, and they never remarried.

I also love how this anime deals with parenting so far. Matthew is right. Anne shouldn’t be useful to them. They should be useful to Anne. Many parents think of their own children as investment or a tool instead of people and it’s depressing. It’s really interesting that a novel from over a century ago addresses this.

I love how beautiful this anime looks. I'm glad this will be a 2-cour anime. Tho since it has less than half the amount of episodes of the OG, I assume it either has faster pacing or some content from the original won't be here. Probably both. I assume the original version had a lot of anime original stories since it was very common at the time. Anyway, I'm looking forward to what happens next. If I like it enough, I'll give the OG and the prequel a shot.

Definitely been curious about this and this was a nice premiere episode. It's got that old anime feel with some Western aesthetics included too, which fits the premise of the show perfectly. It took us a century to get this in animated form the second time around but it's never too late, am I right?

Anne-chan casually walking in after hearing about madame's reluctance and throwing the curveball at her a few times was gold, looks like we've got an interesting, charming and chatty main character here. Mrs. Blewett definitely doesn't seem like the type of caretaker one could trust, I'm glad madame felt the same way.

This ought to be fun!

This is my first introduction to the series as I haven’t seen the 1979 original and I love it already. It has that 70s charm mixed with modern flare. The art and animation are gorgeous and I am a sucker for these found family coming of age stories.

It’s not always about what others can do for you, but what you can do for others. I think the Cuthbert family are going to be exactly what Anne’s needed all this time. Sweet older people who might have forgotten some of what it means to be alive.

Matthew was great from the start, but Marilla should know better than to tell an orphan you didn’t want her and were expecting a boy 😭 like cmon man that was cruel. She might not be a boy, but that doesn’t mean she can’t help out around the house with things. Sometimes the best things in life are those you least expect.

Question tho, subs have it listed as asylum.. is that just what they called Orphanages in 19th century Atlantic Canada or does Anne actually have some mental illness? That aside, I love how she kinda gaslights them with that “no point in me going out and becoming attached to this place if I can’t stay” lol Anne’s silly af.

This is gonna be a sweet one. Love stories that take place over time and we see characters come and go, people die, times change.. ready for an emotional roller coaster.

I'm admittedly biased towards the old school aesthetic along with a duller color palette of the 79 version directed by the legend Takahata. WMT anime just hit different. That said, this modern adaptation is charming nonetheless and I like the energy of Anne here. Pacing seems alright as well. But generally I agree that for a coming of age story set in a tranquil place it's beneficial to keep things slower and toned-down overall.

It's hard to form a fair judgment of a remake when all the time you're thinking of what they've changed and what they've kept, rather than trying to appreciate this new version in its own terms.
So I'm just going to praise the visuals, and some of the direction, like the close up shots of Anne's face at the station.
Also shoutout to whoever subbed this for sticking to the language of the novel.
It's a blessing that they are doing 2 episodes at least. In 12 episodes the story would have been absolutely butchered.

It's almost as if Ghibli make this, and since I mention Ghibli that means it's a highly compliment word. I'm not far of though since Isao Takahata adapt this novel 45 years ago as a part of World Masterpiece Theater (the famous one is Heidi, Girl of the Alps)

AHHH she's so cute and weird. Like Marilla says, "she is kind of interesting."

Wonderful background art. Noticeable brushstrokes and canvas texture make it look like an old picture book.

Great character animation, too. I loved the little touches like when Anne fumbles her hands as she's crying and walking towards the table. It feels like the animators really poured their love into this character. Or when Matthew is slightly leaning towards Anne during breakfast.

I watched some live-action version as a kid, but I've forgotten most of it. I can kind of see why Anne of Green Gables is such an evergreen story.

Comfortably sold on this anime.

A really good period piece slice of life where we follow an orphan Annie (in the literal and metaphorical sense) as she has adventures with her new family and friends. Very cute, very endearing, and the artwork reminds of the stuff that comes out of Studio Ghibli. I am looking forward to future episodes.

Well it’s unfortunate that I gotta miss Witch Watch to catch this show (I only allow myself so many shows a season), but damn this first episode has sold me, The Answer Studio had me a bit cautious with their Tower of God sequel, and while that didn’t look terrible, this is completely different man, this is downright beautiful even, from the animation to the art style, and the backgrounds look amazing too, who is this studio and what did they do with The Answer lol. Of course that horse looked a bit off when put next to everything else, but I can forgive an ugly horse if the rest is this good.

So to start, I have not seen the original 1979 anime, I really wish I could say I was cultured enough to have seen it but alas I cannot lol, and that is such a long time ago too, it’s coming up on 50 years even, but I am no stranger to consuming stuff made from this time period, I am a deadhead after all lol, and I think they did a fantastic job capturing a classic style with this show, like it looks way different than anything else coming out right now, and I love that. And as for the episode itself, it wasn’t anything crazy but it really got me liking Anne and the old couple that took her in, I’m sure Anne might come off as annoying to some but personally I want a fraction of the energy she has for the world lol, but I do relate to her on that too, I love going on walks and enjoying nature, especially during this time of the year, I just may not have the same sense of wonder that she does lol.

And thank god Marilla came forward and decided to keep Anne around, I could tell the moment they walked in that room that Blewett would be a terrible person to send her to, so this little ray of red haired sunshine is going to stick around in Green Gables after all, you love to see it. Yeah I think this show was a good choice this season, I hope this adaptation can please fans of the original going forward, along with people like me who have never seen it, and if I like this enough I just might go back and watch it myself eventually.

I just wondered why I was watching an anime with a very old character design, interestingly. It reminded me of the old days... 😭

Will put a stop watching this for now, as series like these should be watched in a single run. 😳
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.
