the op/intro is really good

but a 5 min and 50-sec intro.....
we also get to see zodd in this episode

the pacing is very fast

even though I've seen the movies and the 90s anime I'm still enjoying this

and judging from the first few minutes of this ep I think we'll get a continuation for the anime

What a beautiful Forces AMV we just got with this episode, fuck yeah!

Newcomers should skip the first 4 minutes though, as great as this was, it's full of spoilers for this entire arc.

as someone like me who has watched the trilogy movie, the first 4 minutes were spoilers and it's actually ok to me since i watch those before.
the opening is what actually i'm waiting for, even though it's actually reused from the movie.

also they inserted forces theme from 1997 anime, which makes it fire.

Well for those who just discovered Berserk (sorry you did by watching this bad adaptation) skip the first 4 to 6 minutes its spoils and burns the whole thing.

And for those who loved, adored the Berserk manga, seen the horrible things anime studios doing/done to this masterpiece my heart is with you, we are waiting for a good quality adaptation by some of the big studios and only by those who love making anime.

I think a better use of those first 4 minutes would have been to animate the scene from the manga where Guts first starts to warm to the band of the hawk, through talking with Judeau and being dragged into the festivities by Pippin.
It would have made his words about changing over the past 3 years at the start of the episode carry more weight, and do a better job of introducing us to the other members of the band.

Sorry guys, but it looks like Bonfire of Dreams might be the only actual new scene in this adaptation. Fingers crossed for new stuff anyway.
Even so, I'm still really enjoying it, and despite some of the cg jank in the 'slice of life' sections of this episode, I'm finding myself really impressed by how well animated some of the cg actually is (like Guts' clash with the Chuder knights at the start of the episode, or Griffith rolling away from Zodd later in the episode, for example.).

I actually really enjoyed this episode. Despite the mediocre animation for 99% of it, the 5 minute long ass intro and the bullet train pacing, it was still a great episode by Berserk adaptation standards.

I just wish a better studio had picked it up already. I still don't understand what these highly acclaimed studios are afraid of. Hate and controversy maybe? Then again, a studio like MAPPA has already been through all of that and never backed down. What's so hard about giving Berserk the adaptation it deserves? A mediocre studio like 4*c could make some great animation sequences (like the Guts and Zodd duel in this episode).

What's stopping these studios from adapting it? Budget? Reception? These don't seem like real problems. Considering Berserk has a very dedicated cult following like no other anime or manga, and considering there are stakeholders willing to go all in with the budget for a project this intense, there shouldn't be anything holding them back.

So it starts with Forces AMV. First few seconds I thought it is going to be opening for the series. Nope. I don't know what the hell that was. After that we get to actual opening. It is basically the same as it was with the movies. I said after first episode I was hoping to see first battle animated cuz "new scenes" but, nope. Straight to the next cut part of the movie. Ugh. This version of anime is disgrace. I am shocked how little effort has put into this. I guess by "new scenes" we can now assume it is campfire of dreams which they already had animated and that's it. Fucking disgusting!

And try at least a little? If there was any doubt that Studio 4C doesn't know what is the priority to adapt, now I'm sure. In those four minutes, instead of spoiling new fans, they should have Guts' childhood or his first night at Band of the Hawk.

For those still in doubt, by the interviews the new scenes practically confirmed are: a new romantic scene with Casca, more scenes from Judeau, a scene in a bar (probably Guts' conversation with Judeau and Corkus), and one more scene from Rickert and Griffith (but those two probably going to be something short).

I don't have any hopes for a sequel after this episode, but we'll see.

I agree with every word, but I think it's not too late for that yet.

Like, I think the Bonfire of Dreams is yet another opportunity to revisit Guts warming up to the Band of the Hawk, as he is mesmerizing over his journey with them and how it changed him for the better and gave him purpose. Same thing with Guts' past flashback that we never really got fully animated so far, it can be inserted somewhere around the time

For now I'll patiently wait to see if this is just our usual TV edit with little extra scenes and adjustments, or an actual adaptation expansion with something more than only what was announced.
The timer in the site gives me hope for something more by ep 10 or so.

It’s fucking Berserk so I enjoyed it but holy shit is the pacing fucked. Having the “I will have my own kingdom” in the first episode and cutting Guts’ first battle with the band if the hawk doesn’t help. It would’ve been nice if this episode was just the Guts first battle and then have the second battle and conversation with nobles. Zodd would’ve been better placed in episode 3 imo. That being said the animation and CGI looks better than the movies. It is an okay adaptation, the 90s anime is still better. This is clearly just for manga readers to see some scenes in the manga animated, as we’ve seen golden age a million times. I’m hoping they’re preluding to a new anime starting with other black swordsman arc or lost children chapter.

The first 6 minutes were...kinda pointless?I mean sure the opening is back which is ok I guess, but what's with the overly long compilation at the start? Some bad CGI(Griffith talking with Guts),some ok(battle of soldiers, camera was kinda confusing)and at the end, really good(Zodd).Don't like him green tho(looks like a goblin).

I know show is following movies basically but damn EP2 has such a bad pacing. No build up in Guts-Griffith relationship nor the skill level of Guts upto Zodd fight. This episode felt massively rushed.
EP1 was great imo.
I do know 1st movie was worst imo so show towards the end is going to improve a lot just on that aspect but damn you can see how 90s show took its time in scenes and showed us almost everything.

This is such a blatant cash-grab, jeez. I had low expectations but this SUCKS.

EDIT: The fact they put an AMV at the beginning of the episode that spoils a bunch of stuff, with the inferior remix of Forces, actually puts this as the worst version of the Golden Age. It's impressive how poorly put together this cut is. The fact they have the cajones to call this a memorial to Kentaro Miura is insulting.

the shot of the black swordsman give me some of the anime adaptation of this arc next, but a struggler can only hope

What frustrates everyone who is pissed watching this Memorial Edition is that we think this thing only exists because they're going to make a sequel. They even made a countdown.

If is just to make a little more money from Berserk, then these small changes are in fact a surprise effort, but if they really want to adapt the rest of the manga... man, Golden Age is far from my favorite arc, but it's the base of the story and cutting out so many important things hurts the next arcs.

It feels rushed. Movies already had their fair share of pacing problems. The first epsiode felt much slower, while at the same time giving us 2 major fights to back it up, both engaging. Here, the only one that's interesing is against Zodd and it lacks any impact. In the manga Nosferatu had way more time to shine in that one scene where he fights Guts and Griffith, here, he almost seems like a side villain despite his huge meaning. Also the 4 minute compilation at the beginning of the episode, while nice on it's own, it doesn't serve anything (even tho listening to Forces is always fun). I think the 3 original movies and by extend this Memorial edition always succeeded at the slower moments, despite the fact that most of them needed to be cut. That one conversation that Casca has with Guts at after that one battle: magnificent. Overall I still have high hopes for this anime. It may bring Berserk to the anime scene and maybe even give it a new light. I wish that they make a Black Swordman Arc after this.

Why are people complaining about spoilers to something that happened 26 years ago? It's an event that is commonly depicted in a lot of BERSERK merchandise from massive statues to clothing and video games. It's kinda dumb at this point. Did people whine about them showing the eclipse to promote the third movie?

I believe this TV cut is squarely targeted at people who have already familiar with BERSERK.

The first part was awkward, but it's looking just as mediocre as the movie trilogy was originally. We're still missing so much stuff, Guts' backstory, Guts' first night where Corkus tries to kill him, his first battle where he proves himself, Guts' night where Pippin and Judeau force him to bond with the band, Judeau talking about Griffith with Guts, Guts and Griffith's water fight and the introduction to the Behelit, Guts being given his first men, and still the same amount cut out from Zodd, and that's only from the first 2 episodes
