Enta's sister is cute :D

I like her playful energy in this show. Got another Kappa performance that was oddly satisfying to watch. Enta's attitude this episode took on a slightly more serious approach too. Heh, this show's humor has that weirdness especially during the performances. It's like a theatrical battle with some very gimmicky way of storytelling.

Glad they managed to help Enta's sister in the end.

Lol, the kiss. What the hell.

Wow, this episode was less confusing that the last.

I'm glad that the animation is still good.

I really love the cops!

Does this mean I get to watch gay cops every week performing that dance? This is the best anime to ever be created.

I feel p bad for Enta, this isn't going to end up well for him, is it? I saw somewhere that the very first scene of the anime spoils the whole series, and that was the scene with Kazuki going on a run with the soccer band thing that Enta has hm... I was thinking Kuji and Kazuki were going to have the "true" connection since they're very similar, but now I'm thinking Enta is definitely a factor...

Haruka is adorable though, the ED scene confirmed the theory about him so that's neat.

OMG WE'RE STARTING WHERE WE LEFT AND IT'S CUTE.
I'm so happy to watch this. This is anime is my guilty pleasure. Enta's delusions are awesome. Haruka is absolutely the cutest at the end.
AND I LOVE MY COPS REO AND MABU. MY BABIES I HOPE YOU'LL BE ALRIGHT.
So if desire is assimilated does that mean you ceast to exist?
P.S I LOVE HOW REO AND MABU DANCE. THEY ARE JUST AMAZING AND I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.

I am so scared for what's going on with Haruka. My theory of her is becoming a little too true.

Though it makes me wonder who is the boss the cops are talking too. I'm guessing the idol for now just because she hasn't done much yet.
It really do be like that though.

So gay. It's not often I see yaoi in anime I like.

This fucking anime will me the death of me I swear to god. I love how Enta doesn't play with words and straight up confess he's in love with Kazuki that's such a rarity in anime.

They'll probably start to cut it down to a couple of seconds at one point, no use playing it every week.

The explicit depiction of homosexuality was interesting, though nothing revolutionary. I expect more from Ikuhara.

OMG this series is honestly soo good.
This weeks episode made me laugh so much I can't stop grinning like crazy especially those delusions were hilarious!

And what's up with this silly pose Kazuki and Enta do in his delusion? XD What the hell man way too funny.

I liked how Enta confessed to Kazuki even if it was just a delusion! Almost like a real proposal of sorts XD

Oh also I love how Kuji saved Entas ass ;_; He's such a nice kid even if he pretends to be a baddie!

This one was all about Enta and his feelings for Kazuki. He has liked him for so long that he doesn't even know since when he started feeling like this. They were always together and Kazuki kind of became his emotional pillar. And this time Enta was the one who had his secrets leaked. And since he can't get his feelings across to Kazuki, he does stalkerish things like getting an indirect kiss through his flute or feeling his scent through his uniform. Though I can't condone his actions, I do understand how he feels. Liking someone and not being able to be open about it can be frustrating to say the least. And it even seems that Kazuki not caring at all because he thought Enta's kiss was a "dare game" was real and not part of his last fantasy. Ouch. But I guess that at least Kuji realized that Enta likes Kazuki for real, he didn't even try to take the silver dish from him after all. And I do wonder how he feels about it. He probably doesn't care though, at least not yet.

The last scene was interesting as well. Enta was pretty much getting ready to give up on feelings when Haruka gave him Kazuki's original miçanga. I wonder what happened to Haruka. I also wonder if the reason Kazuki stopped laughing and playing soccer has something to do with Haruka's condition. But that's something to look forward to, things keep getting better. Another noteworthy point is that Reo and Mabu work for a empire, and they need to send "desire energy" to their boss. I wonder what they are going to do now that the kappa boys are getting in their way. At least Enta's sister was saved from that guy. lol Oh, and I really love Reo and Mabu's dance. And the reference to Tenku no Shiro Laputa was gold!

Loving the soundtrack, sounds similar to yuri kuma but still its own thing (this is the same composer who did yuri kuma, penguindrum and toradroa, yukari hashimoto)

Side note; entas sister looks a LOT like lulu.

I think the first scene is foreshadowing the "thing" that happened with Haruka that made Kazuki who he is now. Kazuki was dressed in the same outfit as "old Kazuki" in Enta's fantasies. Then we hear Haruka yell "Kazu-chan" and there's a clanging noise of the sign falling onto the ground, sort of like Haruka got hit by a car or something?

They should kiss can interrogate me all they want and dig out my deepest desires. Haruka is the sweetest. Please be safe my baby boy. I'd fight them otters if they come after you.

So after the whole imagination thing at the end, did they just like completely erase what they saw? I mean they both were completely blank face even though when they saw the leak they were surprised? Also why are they using almost the exact same scenes and animation every week? It feels like there is barely any effort being put in and people are blind sighted just because they put something like homosexuality in it. Disappointing episode for me honestly.

we are not blind sighted, it's just ikuhara, that's him, he does that since 1993. It's not lack of effort, it's a show approach he always use.
i mean, i can get why someone new to his works would get upset, but still, that's not lack of effort, it's just him.

I believe there are three secrets technically being leaked in that sequence: Enta smelling Kazuki's jersey, Enta using Kazuki's flute, and Enta kissing Kazuki. Enta saw the first one, Toi saw the second one, and Kazuki saw the last one. So Kazuki did react to seeing the kiss, thinking it was a dare, but he doesn't know about the other ones. Meanwhile, I think Toi doesn't really care about the secrets at all as he doesn't seem to react much to the revelations in general.

Gets weirder and confusing by the episode, but I can't stop watching! It definitely wakes me up like caffeine.

When they do that pose you know Enta is fantasizing! Poor guy man, you lose some in life and can't always be the golden duo. Like this weird series even though I don't get its point, it is hilarious and has a great animation.

All three of them are most likely to see all those sequences based on their reactions in the first secret. There's no way Toi and Enta could know about the fake Sara being Kazuki if the first sequence of Kazuki changing outfit was not shown to them.

Kazuki probably has a loose screw in his mind to just brush Enta's secret off as it seems the guy lacks common sense sometimes, he probably thought all of Enta's actions were from dares.

I actually doubt that because in the first episode's sequence that Toi saw, there was an emphasis on an up-skirt shot (so I take it as Toi only realized when he saw what was underneath the fake Sara's skirt). I do admit I think it's a bit of a stretch for Toi to have noticed, though maybe because Toi also knows a secret of Kazuki's is being leaked, it had to have been Kazuki.

Meanwhile, what Enta saw is kind of self-explanatory in my opinion. After all, he saw Kazuki in the act of sending a selfie to Haruka.

I think there might be holes in the way I'm looking at it (specifically with how the secret in episode 2 was handled). I think at the moment, both interpretations work as your's makes sense as well. Maybe one will be proven to be the correct one in time. But if not, I'm not particularly concerned about it.

Kazuki was using a different phone and chat account just to send selfies to Harukappa (which is also just a nickname of his brother), I doubt Enta could figure out anything just from that sequence of the chat without seeing Kazuki actually doing the crossdress.

Okay so I gotta sorta crackpot theory on Kazuki and his brother: this show is gonna pull a double twist on us and reveal Haruka to actually be a girl. Due to a certain traumatic experience (that's also probably got something to do with the wheelchair) she see's and thinks of herself not as a girl, but as a boy (repressing the aforementioned fact, possibly with some memory loss) and Kazuki is dressing up as a girl to be the female/feminine influence and role model for her he otherwise couldn't be (and her love for that idol might have been the only thing that stayed constant? Hence it being the only way for Kazuki to "communicate" with her) after feeling helpless towards the matter and also guilty, having had something to do with that original event/trauma (hence why he isn't really talking with her much at all outside of the guise, he's avoiding her). He's doing this largely I'd guess in the hopes of getting her to accept her femininity and self once again.
My basis and evidence for this is... Well, not much. It probably isn't the case, but I just can't think of any other likely explanation for Kazuki's motivations/situation, and Haruka's obviously intentional ambiguity in name, design and voice (we were clearly meant to see "him" as a girl at first). Also at least in the first episode, there was that intentionally ambiguous pronoun used by Kazuki for Haruka right?

EDIT: Actually scratch that theory, instead of necessarily being a girl Haruka is instead that idol we always see. Compare them side by side, they have the exact same face shape, and it would make sense for him to be able to play an even better one than his older brother can. The same reasons for his situation and Kazuki's actions still largely apply though. Haruka probably ended up repressing it all after being broken at not being able to perform (due to whatever caused him to be wheelchair-bound) and Kazuki is probably doing what he is to keep that illusion, and keep him happy. This is probably also why he's not that happy anymore and quit the soccer team - it's putting a lot of stress on him, quite literally maintaining multiple illusions for his brothers well-being. The red herring(?) is how we still see the idol on the screens, however those daily unspecific messages can easily be prerecorded and rerun.
And another possible reason for him dropping soccer is because that might have been the cause for Haruka's condition. Haruka might have tried taking after his older brother in terms of soccer, what with his skill, and injured himself badly. And if this were the case, it would have all lead to a lot of guilt on Kazuki's part.

Anyway... I'm loving this show so far! And it's really rare for me to especially like Yaoi shows, so I think that's proof of how well this show's handling it's subjects and themes. I can't relate to a lot of them, but it's still been keeping me hooked, interested and sympathetic, and nothing has felt forced or especially unnatural with the characters either. Excluding the bizzare peripheral happenings, the characters and their interactions have all felt largely believable and always compelling. And I love how it's executing all three of them, being all (at least right now) deeply flawed characters. I'm looking forward to seeing how each of the three improve and better themselves now that the show's largely established all of their personal issues and faults, and with the central issue for all three being their inability to be honest with those they care about the most--and doing everything in their power for that person and their issue (even breaking the law) EXCEPT that which is really required - honesty. Being kids with certain not too normal, socially-stigmatised personality quirks, they haven't had the chance to really learn that yet.

They all want to "Connect" with that important person (be it their little sibling, older brother, crush) and be harmonious and share mutual understanding--but mutual understanding just isn't possible if you're holding a big part of yourself back. You have to be brave and be open, which none of these three are right now with them having quite literally shut these qualities of theirs away in their "boxes"-- keeping them shut off and a secret. And obviously the Kappa is the narrative device to get these "boxes" of theirs to first open, and get them to start learning and getting used to being honest. And, furthermore, this is what will prove to seperate and differentiate our protagonists from our antagonists (the various "enemies" we've seen them face so far). The distinction between them will end up being that our three protagonists learnt to be honest with their desires, the key to forming and keeping truly cose relationships, while these antagonists--the fish/kiss guy, the cat/fur person--they never were. They kept these parts of themselves locked away and a secret, forever in that box--and this is a truly toxic thing that will only manifest itself in terrible ways, being that it makes the person truly lonely, with no "connection"/understanding or any possible means of proper emotional release. It's an equivalent to wasting your life away, not being able to ever connect, and this to me is what the show is getting at - the importance of doing so. And I'm without a doubt that this is something Ikuhara deeply relates to, being uh, quite the quirky character himself. And to further this, I recall having read that he felt like he "had" to make this show, and that he wanted to convey a particular message to certain people.

Anyway, rambling aside - the reused animation really hasn't been an issue for me so far, namely because there's always some variation with it--in the small details, but also in there always being different contexts and things it's exploring with them. And also because it's easy to understand that there's a worthy sacrifice here, presumably reusing some stuff allows them to reach and maintain a quality and consistency they otherwise might not have, and put focus on other, more important things. And besides, reused transformation sequences and special moves are hardly much of a sin. Also the music and the designs/aesthetic of this show are already a 10 for me, and they can easily make up for it.

Overall a fairly straightforward episode with a lot of growth for Enta's character, as well as confirming that Haruka is, indeed, unable to walk. I thought the scenes with Enta and Haruka were really nice. Some of the best parts of the episode, notwithstanding Enta's fantasy delusion. :)

I've read comments for all three episodes that believe Sara is an otter, perhaps the otter boss. My theory is that she's a kappa, perhaps a kappa princess (Keppi's sibling?). If you read the fine print during her program, it makes it very clear how much she loves cucumbers, that she's looking for her prince (who is definitely not a frog), and so forth. Then there's the mascot of hers, which is clearly a kappa and resembles Keppi. The hat she wears looks mysteriously like a kappa's plate, and she uses the ア sign in her program, not the otter sign. In contrast, I haven't seen any evidence that makes me believe she could be an otter.

What happens in the secret leak.... stays in the secret leak. ^_^ I think it's intentional at this point that we don't quite know for certain.

In other words, he's like a typical rom-com MC then. I can see it. It may be a type of defense mechanism, allowing him to rationalize the kiss in some way so that it doesn't change how he thinks of Enta.

Speaking of which, why do people call the gay scenes "yaoi"?? Yaoi is an acronym that literally means "no climax, no point, no meaning". It seems kinda off-putting to link actual gay characters with a genre that completely fetishises gay people. I'm not trying to sound like an SJW, but you don't call anime featuring heterosexual couples "straight" do you?

Someone who makes some sense around this place! Gay is gay and yaoi is yaoi. If it's a semi-realistic portrayal of a gay character, it's not yaoi.

FYI, the pronoun thing was caused by the translation into English. In Japanese, pronouns do not have gender, and a more literal translation might be "that person" or "this kid" instead of "she" or "he". The translator was probably guessing about Haruka's gender as much as we were at first. And, like nearly all of us, also got it wrong. (Or did they???)

I'm just gathering a few things about some parts of the novel from twitter source that the episode skipped. Take this with a grain of salt.

- Enta had a time living in foreign country due to parent's work prior to a few years ago before he came back to Japan and made friends with Kazuki. As he didn't know the language, and he was not so open and energetic like his sister, he struggled to make friends there.

- And that probably still made it difficult for him to make friends even after returning to Japan. So as you can expect, Enta always wanted to try soccer and Kazuki was the one who extended his hand to help Enta.

- The "Saratto (Just like that)" pose was originally from a famous soccer both of them like.

- Enta also showed jealousy when seeing his sister being able to openly express about her love, while he can't afford to do so cause of gender issue, I guess.

- Enta seems to volunteer to take Haruka to do the therapy at hospital every week, which was the scene after the ending.

I'm also really curious who exactly the otters answer to, assuming we get to find out at all. I'm not sure about where Haruka's story is going, because the set-up seems a bit soapy for an Ikuhara show, but in fairness, Ikuraha shows are no stranger to dying younger siblings.

A bit late on watching this one because mosquitoes decided to bit and make me sick. Thank you, freaking mosquitoes; I hate all of you.

Alright, so. Wheelchair. My fucking heart. And the hospital. So yeah, Haruka is completely sick, so my trans theory is probably ruled out. Ikuhara why do you do that.

I'm scared that the Human Sacrifice this time is going to be Haruka. I won't survive it if it's him. Although I was thinking it could be Enta, WHICH I WON'T BE ABLE TO TAKE IN EITHER.

Okay, so a few things that I only realized this episode: The lucky word of the day has to do with the ones that the cops kill. I bet my whole fortune (2 dollars approximately) that the weasel is Sara's kappa. For some reason, just like Kazuki keeps taking the pictures for Haruka's well being (YOU DUMBFUCK HE JUST WANT HIS BROTHER STOP PRETENDING TO BE SARA T_T), the cops have to kill the ones that have something to do with the fortune for the weasel... Or something?

CAN WE PLEASE TALK ABOUT HOW ADORABLE IS ENTA'S LOVE FOR KAZUKI. I'M SO SOFT. And it was great seeing him in the spotlight and having his secrets leaked. I'm waiting for the **** boy (I know his name has four letters, but I always forget it). I hope it doesn't have to do with why Haruka is sick in any way (who fucking knows oh my god). His leaks gonna be the more surprising ones I think.

Now we have a crossdresser leak and a gay-love leak. IKUHARA I LOVE YOU. I can't wait for more I CAN'T FUCKING BELIEVE I GET TO SEE GAY COPS EVERY WEEK. Also protect them, I didn't like the "betrayal means death" PROTECT MY GAY COUPLE AT ALL COSTS.

I'm fangirling real hard I think, Ikuhara i love you thanks for blessing me when I'm sick as fuck ♥

Edit: Can we please talk about how sad Kuji (!!!) seemed when he was saying that he talked to the guys and they ran away? My baby just want some friends but everyone is afraid of him just cuz he's a drug dealer. MUST PROTECT.

Loving the soundtrack, sounds similar to yuri kuma but still its own thing (this is the same composer who did yuri kuma, penguindrum and toradroa, yukari hashimoto)

Side note; entas sister looks a LOT like lulu.

Yessssss! We are so blessed to see her working with Ikuhara so many times over! Her soundtracks are great. The one from Enta's fantasy was awesome.

I think so too! And what bothers me the most is that, while the sign is on Kazuki's body, we see the weasel...

I know you're just minding your own business and talking to someone else but can I just say that this part of your comment make me think "YES???????" and punch my chair. Kuji is like SO CHILL. He's like "wtf you crossdress wtf you like your childhood friend. lol now where the fuck are my gold/silver plates"

Kazuki was using a different phone and chat account just to send selfies to Harukappa (which is also just a nickname of his brother), I doubt Enta could figure out anything just from that sequence of the chat without seeing Kazuki actually doing the crossdress.

I agree with @Lunallae after rechecking the sequences for every episode. In the first one, Toi realizes Kazuki is the girl from the morning because of his underwear, then Enta sees Kazuki sending a selfie dressed as a girl, and Haruka calls him "Sara-chan". In the second episode, Kazuki sees when he stole the cat, then Toi sees him running with the cat and he's like "what is he doing?" because he hasn't seen the previous leak, then finally Enta sees the cat-ear thingy and realizes Kazuki stole the cat. Same thing in this last episode: Enta sees the sniffing part, Kuji sees the flute part and is like wtf dude and Kazuki sees the kiss scene. If you come back to check them as I did, you see there's a focus on each one faces or their sillhuete in the leak when it's the leak they're seeing.

Also that was very helpful because I wouldn't have realized that AT ALL if you guys hadn't said it, so thanks. Gonna keep that in mind from now on.

Also, does anyone know if the spinoff manga Reo & Mabu is connected to the plot here? I saw the official Sarazanmai twitter mention it, but I don't know what it said exactly.

A really nice person told me, in the last episode discussion, that the spinoff manga is a prequel to the manga, and sent me this (translated tweets showing a few scenes from the manga):

Really long posts, but I see so many great theories that I really felt like I needed to talk to everyone :') I really love seeing so many Ikuhara fans in one place.

Yuri Kuma Arashi-esque episode, the way of storytelling in particular and the whole atmosphere with the delusions reminded me of the 5th episode of the anime before mentioned. Even the OST was similar.

Nice episode

The dances and songs are the BEST THING EVER. I’m just waiting another week to see more of this gay dance.

So people are dissapearig after their desire is extracted in the form of zombie? And Kazuki’s brother... Damn, this is getting kinda dark.
Enta is giving me creeps, kissing his friend like this without his consent and constantly having fantasies about him. And Kazuki is as oblivious as it can get.
The show is definitely underappreciated tho. But I guess it’s just too weird and controversial.

We actually got a continuation of the kiss from last episode. Yayy!

I had heard the full version of 'Sarazanmai no Uta', the song the three sing as kappas, and wondered how they would steal a kiss. I have to admit it was quite creative the way they did it.

Enta's fantasies are weird and funny. Saratto!

The two police officers are quite mysterious. I wanna know if they are the same people from the spin off manga. Hope their scenes increase later. They are quite enjoyable to watch.

I thought that Enta's last fantasy might actually be real, and that they are just two silly people who liked making the weird pose. I was wrong! (T ^ T) Hope they get a happy ending.

In the first episode, Kazuki said how easy it is for connections to disappear. So, I was wondering if his brother was severely injured in some way. Guess he was. I feel like the humour will slowly fade away and the story will become dark. I think I will like it either way.

I was surprised to see that Enta and Haruka were close. I like their relationship so far. It is so sweet.

Kinda feeling let down by the round glasses kun over here. His entire character so far evolves around Kazuki, even football, even seeing Kazuki's brother at the hospital go back to that. Kuji, who has had lees screen time than Enta, is more well rounded.
Also - you gotta fight your stalker-y tendencies, not succumb to them, creep. Hopefully the series will have enough time to reflect on that.

In contrast, I haven't seen any evidence that makes me believe she could be an otter.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otter#Japanese_folklore

Otters are said to turn into beautiful girls and lure people in to eat, some believe them to fight kappas. In Sara's Lucky Selfies segment, she features items connected to the people cops killed the night before (remember, they always say "we took care of that yesterday" during meetings") - so she is getting information faster, than Keppi - probably due to direct source.
Since otters are prone to trickery, she may only be presenting as a kappa in hopes that the cucumber prince would take the bait. The corporation behind the otter cops seems to take this artificial desire extraction quite seriously, and this episode confirmed that they loathe competition.

So, I was talking about those moments earlier.

One does not just go and kiss his brother's flute yo. Kuji thought Enta was all about that brotherly love, and he can't connect to him, now, can he?

Also, did anyone understand what the fish guy's true desire was in this episode? It probably had something to do with more worldplay and got lost in translation. There are also writings on the walls in the scenes where kappa prince takes the boys to the battlefield, and they seem to be saying something about the object, but oh well. I only managed read the boxes one.

Lol at that Laputa reference and Kuji powdering his ruler as if it is a katana.

Would have never thought I would be seeing and liking such a gay show but the animation, music and plot are so damn good, kinda sucks people complain about the reuse of scene when they have more effort put on them than other animes whole episodes.

Also wtf enta, I thought when you saw your sister in line to be fishified and immediately asked to be turned into kappa was to save her, not the stupid ankle band.

It's true that Kuji said they were like brothers for him. You may be right about this, I dont know. I just feel like he will be involved with this because it seems like he was about to do something.

In chapter 3 of the novel, (don't worry, it doesn't spoil anything if you watched the last episode) it's said that Kuji "noticed" something.

(From what I've seen, I guess I must at least hide the pictures because of the spoil. Sorry for before.)

And I wonder if he really doesn't care at all about the others secrets as long as he has dishes, because at the end of the episode, after he learned that Enta loves Kazuki, he looked at Enta as if he was thinking a lot about what was happening right now.

I wonder if Toi is planning to use his knowledge of the secrets to blackmail the two others for the plates.

Some things I've noticed this episode / things that carry over from past episodes (also regarding the title of this show):
In Haruka's scene at the very end, he talks about his dream of riding on a big cat (Nyantaro) and meeting the Little Prince while traveling the space. In Japanese Haruka says: "星の王子様に出会うんだ"

星の王子様 =hoshi-no-ouji-sama here translates to = the prince of the star (the Little Prince) which can hint the some themes from the actual story, about loneliness, relationships, connections, how each star can mean different things to different people (in this case, how each dish of hope can mean different things/goal/desire for each person?)

Also riding Nyantaro probably refers to Haruka's connection to Kazuki (from previous episode)

皿 is dish in Japanese (read as sa-ra), and in this show 皿 is a metaphor for hope and luck.

Sara-chan = idol of dish=hope (?)

This in a way explains Kazuki's idea of cross-dressing, he's trying to become this figure of hope for Haruka which he believes he can't accomplish as Kazuki himself (brother's position) which is perhaps why he throws it away (as symbolised by throwing away his micanga, may refer to casting aside his position as a brother to Haruka and friendship with Enta at the same time) and devote himself to becoming Sara-chan for Haruka's sake.

And the Hospital name that is shown at the end also contains '皿'
浅草皿病気 = Asakusa(浅草) Sara(皿) Hospital(病気-byouin) (Asakusa Dish=Hope Hospital)

Finally, with the title of this show being called Sarazanmai, I'd have to guess that the Sara in the title definitely has to be connected to the meaning of Sara(皿) that appears in this show (since the title is written in hiragana instead of kanji). As to Zanmai, I'm gonna guess and say it's 三舞 (zan-mai) (meaning 三 = three, 舞 = dance, wheel, circle)

Put together it's something like: the dish (hope) of three (three referring to our 3 MCs), those who dance (within the wheel of fortune/life as symbolised by the lucky wheel which Sara-chan spins? And since every ep our MCs 'dance' (both literally and metaphorically) around this subject of fortune). Just my guess as Ikuhara doesn't use kanji for the title of his shows. He never clarifies them because he believes once he does then the possibility of the symbolism just ends with his explanation, and he'd rather want the audience to find the answer they see fit from their perspective, which is why he uses hiragana or katakana for the titles.

Well, seems like things are starting to all 'connect' now :D
