hmm did they delete the last chapter discussion? As i remember there were 48 in total, now there's 47, and I don't seem to be able to find the discussion that happened there either...

Truly a sad ending. One can only hope for the best, but i still remember the anxiety, lying to myself that girls would make it out alive...

Aren't there only 44 chapters? I mean 42 should be the "END" + 2 extra chapter that adds nothing to the plot.

Ok... I really can't believe it ends like that... lol really.

In the end this led me to... nth =(

Good that after watching the anime (which I really enjoyed) I started to read this in chapter 44.
Even so, If I knew before hand that this would be the end, I wouldn't even have bothered to read the manga.
Personally, not the type of end I enjoy after reading all the menga and/or watching the anime and expecting for answers or a hope or a solid ending. It makes me feel like that everything was in vain and that if I could back in time I wouldn't have read it.

Just a personal feeling.

It's very subtle, but thoughtful and the logical conclusion to the story and the themes it had throughout.

My favorite manga ever; this chapter helped seal it.

As a huge sucker for satisfying, happy endings, I can still appreciate this. Like, 10/10 appreciate it.
As much as we wanted to believe that they will find a civilization up there, deep down we knew they wouldn't. And it's fine. It really is. After all, we knew it wasn't going to be that type of story from the beginning, and in my opinion it couldn't have been more beautiful.
Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou is an absolutely amazing piece of art and I'm glad I had the pleasure of reading it. I'm really looking forward to see what Tsukumizu prepares for us next, because this was incredible.

I want to believe that the box was some sort of teleportation device and that the final drawing with the authors thoughts are them in a better place (not in the religious sense).

The black wall wasn't that exposed when we pulled out after they went to sleep and when we come back there are no bodies in the long shot or the close up with the now exposed black wall with the geometric patterns on.

Wishful thinking maybe.

I just finished rereading the final volume and I kinda agree. The final panel shows both their helmets and one of their bags still on the ground. At first I thought it was just that some time had passed since they went to sleep and they have long died, but looking at the previous panel we see the footprints are still on the ground, so it can't have been a large time skip. We know the technology of old is super advanced so it's certainly possible.

It's very open ended as to what happens after, and at the end of the day it doesn't really matter. Finding nothing on the top level really is the perfect ending of the series. It fits so well with everything presented. Yuu's line "...living was the best, wasn't it...?" is probably my favourite in the entire series. Tsukumizu even reiterates this message in the afterword of the final volume.

I'm so glad to find active discussion here. I just finished this and man... I need a minute.

I think I knew they would find nothing. But the last few chapters were such oppressive hopelessness. Losing the Kettenkrad, losing the worldly belongings that meant so much to them. Using the last of their food to get to their destination knowing they would never make it back down. Its just so sad.

I think they kill themselves together. Either with the C4, or by jumping off. I'd like to believe they find a new way to survive, but I think that's wishful thinking.

I'm sad now.

Agreed, this is one that I keep thinking about and I'm not sure if that's good or bad how heavily it's weighing on me.

I sincerely hope that the rest of this series gets animated. It may not be enough for a full season without some additional filler content, but at least a series of OVAs or a movie. It deserves to be made.

What an... anticlimactic ending... well, not anticlimactic but a bit abrupt instead.

Honestly, it was a rather open ending but after reading the author's last note, my own conclusion is that both Yuu and Chito never woke up from their nap and as a result, they passed away in the snow maybe from hypothermia... who knows. Very sad conclusion but predictable at certain point. It was also established that they both never lost the joy of being alive so that somehow makes me feel less sad because at least, they never thought or considered suicide and stuff.

Dying while you're sleeping... kind of fitting for these girls since that way, they'll never feel the agony of starvation or the immense sorrow if one of them die first, leaving the other one completely alone. Not to mention that they can be now in a better place without even noticing it, thinking they're still traveling together...

It's just my personal opinion since the ending doesn't establish anything concrete but I think this would be the more fitting conclusion for such journey.

Overall, it was a very pleasant experience. I loved the anime so I decided to give the manga a try and although some chapters such as "Rain" didn't have the same impact as their anime counterpart, it still was a delight to experience the same story again.

It was a great manga and I hope these chapters which weren't adapted can be release at least in OVAs format or something. I would absolutely love to watch these last chapters with a proper OST, voice acting and visuals. Let's hope. 8/10

I think they're still alive. Someone mentioned earlier that the wall wasn't fully exposed and I agree with that. In one page you see a geometric shape that is partially exposed. I think the snow covered the face of the black slab and it was uncovered when Yuu and Chi laid down to sleep. I subscribe to the theory that it was an ancient teleportation device.

You also have to question their Grandad's motive for sending them to the top. Why send them up there if there wasn't anything up there?

I finished it yesterday

While I enjoyed most of the series, the final chapters were very anticlimactic to me and had me asking myself "is this it?", to the point I re-read them two times just to see if I hadn't missed something of relevance.

Still giving it a 7/10 'cause of the journey.

It was all in vain. Vain effort, or rather the hopelessness that follows failure, is at the heart of this manga, if you think about it. The only character that succeeded in the whole thing was the tower AI, and its goal was suicide.

Reading this while listening to the anime soundtrack may not had been that great for my heart... I feel empty on the inside. But that just goes to further prove how amazing this series was from start to finish.
It didnt try to avert us, the readers, from what it was about since the beginning. Lost, loliness, lack of purpose all this sentiments were showcased throughout this story, yet at the end of it all is still a series about the joy of being alive even at an empty waste land. Loved the dinamic between Yuu and Chii, loved the philosophical questions that were ask along the way, loved the melancholic atmosphere, loved the multiple heavy topics it adressed, loved the attention to detail and addiction of real paitings and books that interconnect with the main narrative, loved how touching and human it managed to be, and I loved this series in general.
Many might say ending it like this it was pointless, but i couldnt disagree more. It was a fitting end for such a marvelous manga. It was a series about the last humans on earth and their journey, yet in the end they never gave up on life and supposely died as peacefull as they could have. To a single last panel where both girls are sleeping next to each other invoque such a strong emotions, it truly praise worth it.

Truly astonishing.

Why would there be any bodies/bones? People didn't just suddenly disappeared, they was leaving behind one level after another, and had time to cremate their dead ones (remember those scenes with long lines of lockers and pictures from the camera in the submarine?). And the very last people of this Town could be lying in any of those buildings on the top, girls didn't checked everything.

A war most definitely took place — how long before the start of the story, is unknown. Time is weird in this manga. The girls describe the people who built the cities as "ancient", but at the same time the girls themselves are children so even 50 years might be ancient time in their perception. However, there's evidence of technology much more complex than what we have (the potato ration plants, the AI systems, the maintenance and filtration systems that were still running after so much time being left unattended). A rocket is mentioned near the end, but we don't even know if it contained people on board — it could've been just a probe.

As for there not being bodies, the girls don't seem to enter homes, only factories, power/water stations, or public buildings. Maybe the robots cleaned the more "visible" ones up as well, if any were programmed to do so. Decades could have passed after the war, so any human remains could have been scavenged by animals (speaking of which, why were there no animals around? nuclear war?) or simply been scattered away by the elements after decaying.

xiMii said:

We see the grandfather preparing a gun (possibly to defend himself) before sending the girls out. Before that, we see people dressed like soldiers roaming the streets and Chito and Yuuri going to retrieve rations. It's hinted afterwards that humans will most likely engage in the same kind of destructive behavior even when on the brink of extinction. What I took away from all this was that rations were getting low and any people who were consuming too many resources (old, unable to work) were "dealt with", so to speak.

It's possible the grandfather sent the girls away so that they wouldn't be captured by the soldiers, and probably told them to go to the highest place so they could see if there were other human settlements along the way, it was a safer location (the tower was generally avoided), and it was a recognizable landmark.

Took this from youtube comments under a sound of rain video. Yeah I'll just leave this here.

"I find it a bit funny how everyone says that the ending of the manga left them heartbroken and emotionally destroyed. While I can't say that I didn't feel awful, at the same time, i fully anticipated that ending. From the very beginning, it was more than obvious where the anime was heading. Every goal the characters Chi and Yuu met has failed. Every task was pointless. It was never a story of characters achieving their goals through hardship. Quite the contrary, it was "sometimes, there really might be no point in continuing on. There wasn't a point to begin with". And yet, what I find meaningful, is that Chi and Yuu help everyone they meet. Sometimes their help is insignificant. Sometimes their help is accidental. But they do help. We often think to ourselves "well, if I don't' do it, someone else will - it doesn't have to be me". But in GLT world, that's not happening. No one else would've saved Kanazawa on the elevator. No one else would've watched the Ishii take flight. No one else but our girls could've saved the fish in a tank. No one else would've delivered Nuko to its family. The AI has waited for decades (at least!!!) for someone just to come and end him. The anime shows time and time again how important human connections are, how much just being near each other helps us. But no one demonstrates its better than the girls themselves. They are always there for each other. And while it may sometimes feel like girls can be pretty independent, that's simply not true. Yeah, Chi is smart, educated, responsible, self-sufficient (always being the one to do the laundry and try to repair the vehicle). But she is always anxious, overthinks a lot, tends to feel melancholic, afraid of many things, especially the heights. Yeah, Yuu is light-headed, positive, energetic, brave, quick to adapt, and has good intuition. But she also can't read, she doesn't know almost anything about the world, she is no good at creating plans, nor does she has any particular skills other than being good at shooting and good physical form. Plus she is afraid of darkness. Without Yuu, Chi would've been to scared to make a single move and would've probably given up really fast. Without Chi, Yuu would've wandered aimlessly and either got herself into a dangerous situation or went starving due to poor resource management. But even past their skills, they both simply were making each other happier. They were arguing together, they were laughing together, they were talking, they were driving, they were resting, they were acting. All together. And what's the most heartbreaking, we actually kind of saw what could've happened to our girls, if the manga didn't end the way it did. Kanazawa. He also traveled with a person he most probably held dear to his heart. He also had a vehicle. But his vehicle got broken. He lost his only companion. And while Yuu persuaded him to keep living, one must ask if its really worth it. And with him giving away his camera, whether he really did listen to the advice. Now, its true that maybe he did find new people. Maybe he did find new meaning to life. Maybe mushroom people are mistaken and there are actually some people left, perhaps outside the city. And the Chi even acknowledges in the ending that maybe there was a better path for them to follow. That maybe their journey to the top of the city was a mistake. But that's the point of the ending. Not that we should just accept death, lie on the floor and die. But that we should accept life as it goes. There is no point in pondering how things could've gotten the other way. Life goes on, the decisions are being made and we must accept life as it is. Its not just the fact that their situation was hopeless. Its also the fact that they were still together. The series started with a "war" over the food ration. Chi suggested that people will fight when there is, for example, 3 people, with food enough only for 2. Then, they fight over the ration even when there is no dire need. And the manga constantly reminds us that Yuu doesn't like anything more than to eat. But in the end, Yuu shares with Chi their last ration. In the end, they cherish each other more than their own lives. They cherish their connection more than existence. They end it satisfied, together. They had enough. They have enough."

Finished reading this and i have two possible endings for this:

The first one: As said before here, they died sleeping while thinking living is fun, even if it doesn't go the way you want (We can't see their bodies, but we can see other things).

The second: It's like Yuuri said, they sleep, eat, walk and sleep again. After reaching the top, they just did go back to the same life style they had since the beggining.

Probably the first one is the correct, after all it's their "Girls' Last Tour", but i'm staying with the second option where they just lived a fun life after reaching the top.

For anyone that was left like an orphan with this end, there is a fan made book named "Girls next tour" that starts just in the next morning after they laid down to sleep by that strange stone. It's a good read and i realy think the autor himself read that because there is so many little things that i noticed in common with his latest work (Shimeji Simulation).

Just finished reading the manga after watching the anime, and coming off the more hopeful final episode of the anime, this is certainly a downer, but I think it's entirely necessary. Girl's Last Tour has always been about finding the small pleasures in an ultimately dreary life. Sure, the world may have been torn apart in a bloody nuclear war, and food may be running low and you don't know where you're going to sleep tonight, but hey! You got to take a warm bath today. Nice. Finding nothing at the top of the city is just what life is. There's nothing at the end. No goal or final reward. All that you have is the moments you make during your journey, and Yuu and Chi have certainly made plenty over the last 40 odd chapters. Now they can rest. Life was fun, but you can't escape death. And that's okay.

The absurdist outlook on life thoroughly resonate with what I believe. Ending makes the series an absolute masterpiece. (I bought some Calorie Mate ration blocks to roleplay that post collapse vibe.. 340/10 would realize that life really is meaningless but that doesn't mean you can't have the time of your life during your life again)

I don't really know what to think about the ending since it's open but my pessimist self would just think that they indeed just died there together at the end of the trip but I still hope they went back a bit and found somewhere to live close, anyway it doesn't change the fact that it's been a great journey overall, and strange but very original one, loved the philosophical aspect as well.

Sad potatoes. The ending was spoiled for me so I was fully expecting them to die.

What I didn't expect is the open-ended ending. Not really my thing personally, but I think the top being empty fits well with this kind of manga.

Weird how the grandpa would tell them to go up there then have there be nothing so they presumably starve to death. Could also have been a teleporter who knows.

Not my kind of ending. Wish we got a more clear-cut answer on what happened to them. That said, wish it got adapted anyway.

it was fine, i really didn't felt much about anything that happened, what was the message? is there even one?
that war is bad and eventually will be the end of human kind?
that we should be kind to all beings, no matter how different these may be?
that life is a journey and not a destination?
that life is meaningful due to its finite nature and for it to be eternal would turn it into punishment?

why they even wanted to reach the highest stratum?
it feels ... forced, like, the author gave the characters some destination with nothing really in it
in order to magnifiy the sense of lost, specially since it was well established that chito was a smart girl
and see both of them constantly moving forward despite not having a time limit, not knowing what they would find, having being told that
they were the last two remaining humans and having found an AI that may have answers to questions like "what is at the highest stratum? are there any more people still alive? any locations where theres still be food?"
its nonsensical
or maybe the author was trying to convey that the girls were willing to risk their lives in order to satisfy their curiosity?
but still, im not really satisfied, i also found the art to be lacking in detail with very simple characters and even simpler buildings
