Oh boy...this episode involved rice. I like rice so the episode was quite delicious. They cooked quite a bit of it too.

It was really cute watching the girls cooking the food indoors though and they are enjoying the hell out of it. Episode focused more on eating than I had thought this time around. They look so delicious...

My god that Omurice was epic, Shaft has portrayed food in a way that even the Gods are getting jealous from seeing it, the Omurice shown was the best save for having some right in your face in real life. Ryou is a goddess when in the kitchen, if the food isn't making my heart skip a beat it's her just being a nice cook, she needs not worry about ever being a bad housewife.

The end card is hilarious.

1. Liked how all 3 looked at the camera while cooking. It's like we're part of the show. (u'd have to understand what the 3 are saying to not get creeped out...)

2. Kirin & shiina going out to buy omelet ingredients without sleeping & making ryou do all the cooking… fatties, man.

Well, to be fair, I think Kirin (and maybe Shiina) realizes that what makes Ryou happy is cooking for others, so think of it that way :) At least they bought the stuff!

The two times I had omurice in Japan, and the few times I've eaten it at a Japanese market near me (in the middle of the USA), it was with some mild brown sauce that wasn't very sweet, and I liked it.

But, I have to agree with you. When I was a kid I put ketchup on almost everything, but I stopped using it maybe 30 years ago. What I have in my fridge is what my son uses...and I'm always chiding him for using to much :D

I admire people who have the talent to use ketchup to write legibly on an
omelette. Too bad that the ketchup writing on Kirin's omelette came out as
きり※
instead of
きりん
See this image: http://livedoor.blogimg.jp/aaieba149/imgs/e/d/eda93680.jpg

I haven't had ketchup at home for years, though I still dip my French fries in
it at McDonald's. At other places, I now eat my fries dry. However, as a young
child I recall eating a meal of 100% ketchup and nothing else, just one time.

I guess I like my omelettes a bit more well-done, and I didn't really like looking
at the underdone omelettes that the girls were making. So I didn't enjoy this
episode as much as the previous two.

One thing that this show badly needs is some information on their official
website that provides the recipes, or at least lists the dishes that they made.

I wonder why this animes ranking is so bad, its so fun and refreshing to watch and food art is so well made.
The fact alone that many of us get hungry while watching it and want to make that food is proof enough how well made it is.

To me its so refreshing and a good show that i really dont know why such a bad rating

This is my nomination for the best-ever mis-translation in anime subtitles:

At 06:30, Ryou said "takenoko!" ( タケノコ / たけのこ / 竹の子 ), which means
"bamboo shoot". This was just as one of them fell out of the bag, since Ryou
was busy doing a classic SHAFT head tilt and got careless.
http://yusaani.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/23/capt_844.jpg

However, the subs that I watched rendered it as "Oh, shoot!"

Totally the wrong meaning. But brilliant.

And it was immediately followed up by the epic bamboo-shoot catch by Shiina.

Mmmm... sorry. This is based on a "yonkoma" ( four-panel / 4コマ漫画 ) manga.
So that typically means that there will be no ongoing storyline. It's just like in a
comic book where each page has four square panels, telling an entire story with
a beginning through to a punchline. People often hope to see a "plot" when they
want to watch an anime series. Fans of the manga would not expect any plot
development. Of course, it is possible that the anime adaptation could take a
different direction.

I wonder if that was a "liberal" translation. Much like often some translators may try to render puns and word play using things English speakers would understand, where a literal translation would be meaningless. Most Americans in that same situation would have said "shoot!" (or more likely "shit!"), and even I was wondering why Ryou didn't say "しまった" ("shimatta")

@Cratex: Yes, subtitling is a very delicate art when humorous word-play is
involved. In this case, there was no joke in the original Japanese when Ryou
said "takenoko" when she dropped the bamboo shoot. As well, there was no joke
in the English subtitles when Ryou said "Oh, shoot!". But it would be very funny
for those people who saw the connection between the two. I suspect that the
translation team was rolling on the floor laughing. However, it was an "inside joke".

It is almost always the case that puns in one language cannot be translated into
puns in another language. However, subtitlers have to make some decision about
what to do. One option is to completely ignore the word-play in the original
Japanese dialog and "play it straight" in the English subs. Another option is to
introduce very bad puns in the English dialog to represent to the viewers that
there are clever puns in the Japanese. Dramatically, this works fairly well, since
it is obvious to the viewer, from looking at the characters, that joking is going on.

To my recollection, the most disastrous failure in the history of trying to deal
with Japanese word-play was in Episode 13 of "Azumanga Daioh" (2002). It was
based on the very similar sound of "Bruce Lee" and "Bruce three". It was
assumed that Japanese viewers all knew that "Bruce Lee" was a famous martial
arts star. Unfortunately, the English dialog, both in the subs and the dub, made
absolutely no sense at all.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=799&page=22
http://azumanga.wikia.com/wiki/Azumanga_Daioh_Episode_13
http://azumanga.wikia.com/wiki/Azumanga_Daioh_Volume_2/Chapter_15

To be clear, I am not criticizing the skill of the subbers or the dubbers. It was a
problem without a good solution.
