Balsa's past is really interesting. It was neat to see Jiguro and the younger versions of Balsa and Tanda. And it was awesome that we got to see a really cool spear battle. Cant wait to see the rest of the story.

Yeah, great stuff. That scene where Balsa displayed her abilities near the fire for the first time was great. I too can wait to see the end of the story, and what will happen to Chagum on the next episode.

This was an exceptional episode. The way it was produced and directed gave it such splendour that many of the scenes really stuck in my mind. The scene at the end was particularly memorable. I was a little dissapointed at the reused fight scene, although I saw it coming. It would have been better had they not used it earlier on and just used it in this episode for more of a "wow" factor to the animation.

Great Episode. Balsa's past was way more interesting that i had thought. Combat scenes really rocked and like said earlier the Balsa's fire show was amazing. And then in the final battle... Episode ends... Arghhh we do suffer!

It really was. The whole 'Guardian' theme can be applied to the entire anime including the past and future rather than just to Balsa protecting Chagum. Very solid episode.

Great episode. I'm surprised that a series that I picked up looking for some action has held me glued to the set with not much action at all. I guess a great story will do that to you. I'm kinda curious, if Balsa's father was such great friend of the King's #1 spear, why did he not just tell Jiguro about the plot to kill the king instead of going along with it?

Same here... I've been curious about her past ever since the child!Balsa stepped into view in Episode 3. Well, I guess I was curious before then, but the flashback was what pushed that question into my head as what I wanted to know the most in this series.

And they finally answered it! Awesome.

Jiguro is one of the coolest anime characters I've seen! His fighting skills are only paralleled by Balsa's current abilities. And it's so sad... he throws away his life essentially - gives up his position as one of the top warriors of Kanbal, takes in a child who is not his own... and not just any child, the child of his friend who POISONED THEIR KING.

I don't understand Balsa's dad at all... yes the bad guy was threatening to kill his daughter if he didn't follow through, but why didn't he ask Jiguro to protect her and tell the king of the plot BEFORE killing him. If Jiguro could protect her from the other 8 spears, surely he could have protected her from the common soldiers and assassins that the king's brother would have been able to command. Fool. He knew that their lives were forfeit even if he followed through, so he had nothing to lose.

Balsa's fireside demonstration was rather impressive, but she should have known better than to make light of Jiguro killing his best friend. Funny how much that scene paralleled her bit with Chagum acting out. Even the slap was the same. And I think she was right - she said that part of it might have been her way of trying to get a rise out of Jiguro and forcing him to react to her for once and Chagum looked really shocked. Seemed to me like she was also saying that Chagum probably had the same reasons for his escape attempt.

Oh well, at least it make Jiguro stop being so sexist and start training her. Women's musculature may not bulk up in the same way a male's will, but there's no denying that skill is a tremendous part of battle. Balsa's agility and talent more than made up for any lack of strength.

Have to mention that tiny Balsa and Tanda were downright adorable. ^_^ Sooooooo cute.

I can't wait to go watch the next ep and hear the rest of her story... I wonder, did Balsa ever get her revenge? Because it seems like she kept killing for another decade or so after this episode's conclusion based on earlier conversations in the series. Someone needed to kill that tyrant because of the horrible things he'd done and would continue to do.

Good episode, but I have to say the the logic of what some people did in the past makes little sense. The dad had a much better chance at saving his and his daughter's life by not actually going through with the plot. And does Rogsam really need to waste the talents of his greatest warriors for 6+ years to track down some girl and deserter that just want to live their lives?

Plenty of real life leaders/kings have done needlessly stupid shit simply because they could.

Very nice episode

But why didn't Balsa's father just tell the king about Rogsam's plot? I mean it's not like the king wouldn't realize his younger brother was jealous of him and whatnot.
or
Why not just take Balsa and flee before even poisoning the king or something?

Young Balsa was adorable as well. I'm assuming the future novels may address Balsa's desire for revenge on Rogsam.

Another sad episode. How Jiguro saved Balsa from the 2 soldiers and the 1st assassin.
The battle between the 2nd assassin was amazing considering the how it's hard for him to fight his closest friends.

Lol yes.

Oh, btw the performance scene where Balsa let go of her stick and spun around only to deliver the final blow stuck in my mind so hard.

And one more thing, it's so fun seeing the classic Japanese setting for the anime crashing with the more medieval western setting Kanbal has. Stone houses, doors with knobs? Lol.

There's so much parallel between her past and the current situation with Chagum :D Love it. However, I gotta say, Balsa'a a more talkative parent than Jiguro was. I'm guessing the 8 lives Balsa took aren't really anyone she killed, but the ones Jiguro killed to save her? Or I could be wrong and it's just a coincidence. I mean if that were true, then it could be an explanation as to why Balsa thought she killed that guy when she didn't.

The way Balsa and Chagum are held up in the cave watching the snow fall outside as she tells the story of her life just seemed to add to the cold and empty feeling about all of it. Balsa's past is probably my favorite part of this series, just absolutely stunning spear dancing through and through + the emotions.

I wonder if Balsa has returned to Kanbal since this incident . . . Also, wasn't each of the 9 spears (or whatever they were called) families being held hostage? I thought that was what the blacksmith said but it wouldn't make sense with what Jiguro was yelling at them, that fighting was futile.

let me guess Balsa was/is atoning for her step father Jiguro's killings, that he had to kill hes friends for her

Kings Brother Ordered Basla's father to Poison King, i in hes place would have Poisoned that King's brother, it makes no different's cause i die anyway, at least this way i take bad guy who ordered me to do bad with me, but if lucky King mite not kill me, either way at least there wont be any1 anymore who would send people after my daughter, so killing the Kings brother that bastard would have been smarter choice in so meany ways

seems i was 98% right about the connection between That Black-Smith story & Balsa

Great episode, kid Balsa is adorable. And i like it how this anime or Jiguro keep it real about the "women's musculature may not bulk up in the same way a males", of course there are excepcions but thats how things really are, but of course Balsa talent and skill overcome all of that and she is the bad ass we have know. I bet after this, Balsa will teach him hot to fight too.

Wow. I was skeptical at first, but this episode proved to be awesome.

Balsa's past is pretty tragic. I got teary eyed when I saw her crying when she learned her father died.

That fight scene with Jiguro and his friend was badass and seeing Jiguro cry over his corpse was heartbreaking.

Looks like Jiguro is going to die against the six remaining hunters. Poor Balsa... ; __ ;

Logsam is a whole new level of evil. Forcing Jiguro to kill all his friends just to protect Balsa.

Jesus Christ this anime is getting really dark...

Awesome episode.

I wasn't looking forward to this full on backstory because it seems slightly out of place, being so late in the anime, but it was actually very interesting and engaging. Her narrating and them coming in and out of the past to the present was also pretty distinct. I think that was the right decision instead of me having to just figure out the events by being transported in the past.
Good episode.
