I sorta liked the style in the second half of the episode, despite the new style sorta looking kinda uncanny valley creepy as hell.

The 2nd episode reminds me of the Animatrix. The 1st episode was hilarious. c: Favorite scene from the 1st one was when Panty was trying to undo her belt while Stocking helped her. I was just speechless with that scene.

I don't get what this show was trying to accomplish in the 2nd half. It was unnecessarily hard to follow just because the storytelling was bad, and all in all it just seemed completely out of place.

And so? It was hardly even entertaining, if you could call it that. It's one thing to do something that's out of place. When it doesn't even have anything that resembles good storytelling or introduction, what was it even there for?

Pretty meh episode, So far Panty and Stocking has been barley gliding over being considered crap by me.
It doesn't think, it doesn't feel, it doesn't laugh or cry..... All it does from dusk till dawn is make the soldiers die.

Alright Gainax, let's see what you've got today.

A Part
-The Runny?
-Well, it's just picking your nose, I don't see how that could possibly....oh god, that booger actually made me curl in revulsion.
-TOMOKAZU SUGITA! (Gintoki, Kyon, Bullet, epic voice actor)
-Oh boy, we're using boogers to float now. This episode's gonna get gross.
-Yeah, I already knew that one wasn't gonna be....you know...actual sex. Looks like some anime cliche's never get subverted.
-Booger Ghost. Man, this is getting really weird. I mean...wow....
-HAHA! I was wondering if they were going to bring up that Panty wasn't wearing something for easy access to panties!
-Okay, we have reached a new level of visual sound effects. "Pants On."
-Well, that was completely disgusting....NEXT PART NAO!

B Part
-YES YES! EPIC ART SHIFT! THIS IS WHY GAINAX IS AWESOME!
-OH MY GOD! IT LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING FROM "PARANOIA AGENT/MIND GAME!"
-Seriously, I'm too busy being entertained by this animation right now. I don't care if this half is slow (it's not gonna be slow for long I bet)
-Oooooooh...I get it now. It's an in-universe meta episode where in that real world, Panty and Stocking actually exist.
-It's a meta episode...of the previous episode!
-Wow, these employees are total a-holes.
-Oh, this is about to get really bad, really fast. and...whoa, Vomit Ghost....is totally...freaking...AWESOME!
-AHAHAHA! GAINAX, you magnificent trolls of animation (unless the point was to make them stick out). The ending was kinda heartwarming though.

Yeah, Vomiting Point was the best one so far to me even if it was totally depressing.

The poor storytelling elements of the 2nd part are what killed it as far as I'm concerned. They went on too long with unnecessary details that only made the part more confusing than it should have been. Everyone in the part was also introduced extremely abruptly and it was difficult to even follow who was who.

As some kind of meta-joke, it honestly didn't impress me at all, especially considering how much time was wasted doing stuff that was basically unnecessary. As a comedy, this show still leaves much to be desired.

With reference to what? Generally speaking a joke should be concise, to the point, and easy to absorb. Most of what happened in the 2nd half was far from that, and presented poorly as a story. You could argue that other episodes and parts of P&S accomplished the comedy aspect pretty well, but the 2nd part of episode 5 to me was mainly wasted effort that can only be considered "funny" in the most obscure context.

The only thing I can agree from you is that Gainax has good animation techniques.

I thought the second part worked precisely because of the totally unexpected change in storytelling. I also don't see how you could find that part confusing? I thought it was genius how the man was dead inside and that's basically how he could make a ghost manifest.

The first half was hilarious btw. The whole 'nose picking is sex' joke was funny but I nearly died of laughter when Panty causes the accidental massive nosebleed. That was really putting an anime cliché (the nosebleed) into a fitting context of what was really an absurd plot.

Right. That's why I thought it was funny (minus the poorly presented part). It wasn't concise, nor easy to absorb. You had to realize what it was doing. Thus, it wasn't so much "funny" as it was "amusing to understand" thus making it funny.

The 2nd part confused me a lot because they introduced characters and event mechanisms really abruptly. I was basically in the middle of trying to tie names to faces, some of which changed as people got drunk. Plus they didn't exactly make it clear that two birthdays were going on. It was basically mentioned for 1 second in someone's notebook that he needed to get a birthday present for a name that wasn't tied to any face. To me that was poor storytelling. And a lot of it was totally unnecessary at any rate.

I had to watch that part more than once for it to make sense. Given that this is a broadcasted TV series, it shouldn't require its viewers to have to pause or review a scene. It should make sense as soon as possible.

There's something else I want to bring up. I'm not 100% sure the second half was supposed to be "funny" after rewatching it. I mean, meta-wise it is, but now I'm thinking that there wasn't really anything to find humorous in it. I think what was happening was that Gainax wanted to do a different, more depressing scenario and made the animation accompany it. Maybe a few jokes like keeping the turtle and PantSto's banter were in there, but I think it wasn't completely comedy-focused at all and just something...different.

I was pleasantly surprised by the stark change in style in the second half of the episode. I personally enjoyed the contrast between Panty and Stocking's style againest Little Tokyo's. If I may put my psuedo-intellectual cap on, I'd say parts of the world, and even people in this world, could be represented by their own styles, so the style change wasn't farfetched to me. American cartoons such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit, among others, had cartoon characters contrasting with reality, so it wasn't that much of a stretch for me.

And an old, miserable businessman's cummulated stress and misery explosively manifested as a vomit monster? I like it.

Panty mentions that there were "three great nasties of the world"(including the vomit monster)
So what were the other Three Great Nasties? The shit and booger monster?

First part was just your regular P&S which is always fun but the 2nd part was the one that made me really think. You have a middle age man trying to keep his life from tearing up, suffering from depression, stress, harassment from co-workers, nearly losing his job and all he wants to do is get his daughter the birthday she wanted. This all draws in to a very depressing story which the regular animation would just make it non serious, so the old styled drawing was a plus for me, but even after dealing with being turned into a ghost and being covered in his own vomit, he still only got close to what his daughter wanted and even after all this he is still in the same rut of a job he has. Which makes me wonder:
A: Is this how life really is like?
B: Is that all we are doing is "almost" to our goal? and
C: What example does this bring us and how can we solve it?
I have nothing to put here. Go me.

Wow really deep thought, but as for answer to A. Ya I'm pretty sure life is like that for some people but its all about getting through life as ur days go on. If you keep on going, eventually your bound to get somewhere ya know. Anyways its good that the old man got his daughter her present, that 2nd episode was really gloomy and you couldn't help but feel sentimental for the old man.

Btw this show just gets more and more quirky, still liking though.

All of the above. To add, I loved the sudden difference on story angle, watching the creation of the ghost rather than having it explained later, after watching Panty and Stocking go through a series of coincidental events. Clever, nice experimenting on GAINAX's behalf.

Part 1 was pretty standard(But still amusing). Part 2 was pretty interesting. I don't think it was supposed to be funny at all. From what I got, part 2 is a jab at typical Japanese salary men, and how the Japanese workforce in particular can become soul crushing due to extreme demands from employers on a daily basis. This poor guy is just one of the few who probably noticed it after barely getting by with sales, and being pushed aside by the younger employee's.

I might have looked into it wrong, but it's how I saw it.

The second part really fit Halloween atmosphere.

It was just some guy stuck up in a dead end job, trying to do the best for his co-workers and family. No need to really introduce him or his family, considering it wasn't that hard to do (Terao was instantly recognisable after his first scene), as his was just a bystander in one of P&S' battles.

There wasn't any real humour in the second part, other than the fact that Daten City is obviously so very different to Tokyo. I believe the second part was there simply to just be there, taking advantage of the current festivities, being about as out of place as those who wear costumes appear to be.

I wasn't really into the show, but the second part of this episode was fairly interesting. As a standalone feature on social and cultural issues, I think it did very well. However in the context of the Panty and Stocking canon it doesn't really add anything nor does it advance the story in anyway that pertains to the plot or character growth.

Then again, this show doesn't need either one of those two elements to keep the plot moving forward. Regardless I was entertained, albeit on a very primitive sort of way, but isn't that the point of this show?

A2ZOMG said:

Poor storytelling? How so? The plot was played straight and done with a strong undertone in mind as well as several key aspects that work as themes. The execution was pretty creative and the scenes were well storyboarded with adequately believable dialog and good use of atmosphere and overall tone. You mentioned a plot hole (the dual birthday fiasco) that is almost negligible in the grander scheme of the episode, and worked merely as a plot device to push the story forward. Is it a good plot device? Not really, but it does it job.

The scene in the work lockers with him barely visible showing how emotionally dead he is inside was well executed, and done with proper gravitas. It was a good scene.

It was by far the best bit to have come out of Panty and Stocking thus far, and saying it has "poor storytelling" seems harsh. Was the second part a revolutionary look at the Japanese work force and the emotional and mental strain of metropolitan life? No, it's not, but it certainly wasn't "poorly done"

Perhaps you meant the show has poor storytelling as a whole, then I agree with you fully. But I doubt the director or the writers for this show intended it to have have a dynamic plot come full circle by season's end. This show is about as episodic as any series can be.

I think you're critiquing this series in a way that wasn't intended. It was never in the staff's interest to provide a thought-provoking and well crafted story. Panty & Stocking is a Saturday morning cartoon on steroids, and I think it accomplishes that very well. But should we praise the staff and hand out shiny medals? Fuck no. The studio executed what they set out to do, I'll give them that, but what merits does the show have that builds from the onset of the series? I'm still watching to find out. As for me, little tidbits like the second part for this episode was quite interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed it despite it being somewhat unnecessary in the context of the show.

Perhaps the show isn't your cup of tea, and if so, I highly advise you to drop it and give it whatever score you believe it deserves based on your objective and subjective analysis of the show based on it's merits and faults. Otherwise I think you're in for a rough ride because the show doesn't seem like it'll change course anytime soon. Shows like this always have diverging opinions, you seem very grounded to your stance, but I'm still undecided.

Well, no, you're not offending me, it's just that heated discussion can turn into "haters gonna hate" very easily and I'm not really one for that. Nonetheless, I definitely appreciate the comments so we can have a good discussion on this.

Guys, the second half wasn't meant to be deep or epic. It was just Kobayashi Osamu being himself.
