I had to delete your comment for a major spoiler alert. Anyways, hell yes, the Gaidens are worth watching. The Reinhard Gaiden is somewhat interesting, it's funny to see him in his younger years on the academy. The second storyline in the Reinhard Gaiden is just plain awesome with lots of ground combat action, giving it a WWII feel (especially with the Germanic names). And the first story of the Yang Gaiden is definitely worth the watch. It's the last story of this great saga in which manly tears will be shed by the viewer.
