Nishimura on her way to see her grandmother and needs someone to take care of her friend Kuro, but both Takada and Hino can't due to their circumstances, so she brought him along to the countryside, all while Takada meets his old friends...to play his video games, while being watched by his older sister Yukiko. Of course, both wondered what they're each doing right now, and other than Nishimura's older sister Yayoi being occupied with her school friends, she can't stop thinking about him, while her grandma readies some watermelons to beat the Summer heat. This is the first Summer vacation that she turns different because she made a friend through Takada, but Kuro broke out of the cage to go missing, to go finding him. And by coincidence, Takada shows up at their doorstep being the prankster kid next door until he moved out.

Well, it's less of a coincidence, and more like fate that the two of them are together back in Takada's old town. Nishimura's father being cautious about Takada's involvement in Nishimura's life while teasing him about the "will they, won't they" aspect, and both kids head to the family grave to pay respects to the deceased, mainly Nishimura's mother, who passed away right after she was born, telling of the stories of the "replacement". And that's where the Grim Reaper moniker definitely came from, with Takada originally just spewing the nickname like it doesn't matter at all, that now he knows why and breaking into tears.

The road home at night with the fireflies, holding hands together just so not to get lost, it's more than just love, it's affection.

A really good chapter upon Nishimura's backstory that gives reason to Takada. Nice.

I thought this was a really good episode overall.

It was nice to see Akane all excited telling her Grandma how she's made friends at school. It was very sweet.

The Grandma was actually pretty funny trolling Akane's dad though.

Okay Taiyou used to live in the area where Akane's Grandma lives. I'm cool with this. It was a nice to see she has some friends now in the area.

The first 18 minutes were really nice but those last 5 minutes. Man I was tearing up a bit. Not only learning about Akane's mother but seeing Taiyou realize that he has been calling Akane the "Grim Reaper" all this time was pretty emotional.
Great development for him.

The ending scene of them walking home was cute.

I liked that Takada realized that the "Grim Reaper" was used to label Nishimura after learning her backstory. It shows he can be sensitive to his friends.

Additionally, Grandma is hilarious when she makes fun of Nishimura's dad! HAHAHAH!

Overall, I loved this episode! >_< <3

Nishimura's grandma and Takada's older sister approve Nishimura x Takada ship. Now, I must wait Nishimura's dad to accept it even if I doubt it.

The moment Nishimura is telling Takada about her mom hit really hard. Handholding at night day is a good move.

Oh, poor, simple Takada. His obliviousness is always entertaining, but I was happy to see how concerned he is over Nishimura's well being (even if he is late to full understanding).

Just a perfect Sunday morning show: low stakes, charming, and overall, pretty sweet. Definitely one I look forward to every week.

It made it sound like the kids aren't calling her the grim reaper because of her mom since she says she never told anyone, he just realized he may have been accidentally insensitive. Considering the title of the next episode I expect he'll give more pushback to the bullying, at least for a bit.

idk if takada finally released they were called nishimura 'grim reaper' to tease ger, or if he came to the conclusion it could've been insensitive because of her mom, or even both, but i felt so upset when he started crying. especially because, like nishimura pointed out, it's the first time she(and we) had seen him cry. i hope he's able to cheer up a bit more next episode. and maybe he'll start to stand up for her a little more firmly against their classmates

What a sweet episode, loved the more quiet and calm feeling of the episode with that rural setting, and that ending was quite emotional, it hits harder when that super happy type of character starts to cry, he realized a bit about Nishimura's situation and hopefully he gets more active against those awful classmates.

Grandma knows what's up and is getting the dad ready for the future by teasing him.

Really cute episode. Who would’ve thought that Taiyou was connected to Nishimura grandma like that. It really does seem like fate they’re brought together.

I’m glad he finally realised how much she’s been bullied with the grim reaper stuff. Hopefully this means he’ll take an even more active role in shutting them down when they say mean shit

Well well well, that was actually a nice change of pace from the first episodes with Nishimura going to her grandma's with Kuro and Takada coincidentially bumping into her. That's good and all but the way Takada realized what his words meant, even if not intentionally, is what I highlight the most and it at least take us out from the usual compliment heavy guy we thought we knew. If this serves as a way to get them closer and change the dynamic a bit, I'm all for it.

Good episode.

Akane is on her way to her grandma and she's taking Kuro with her since Takada & Hino couldn't do it. Akane is glad to see her grandma in such a long time. Akane's grandma has some delicious watermelon ready for the both of them but when they're done and trying to check on Kuro, Kuro is gone. Akane and her grandma are trying to find Kuro and Takada found him, which is nice of him. Takada lived there in the past before he moved away so the grandma is basically his grandma as well lol. Takada then shows around the neighborhood.

The next day Takada sees Akane with flowers and Akane's father let them go alone. The grave is actually Akane's mom, which is pretty sad, she thinks that she was born to replace her mother because her mother passed away when she was born and that hit Takada hard in the feelings. Takada is actually feeling guilty now that he called Akane the Grim Reaper, he even said "I'm supposed to be your friend", Takada then bursts out in tears because he's been saying awful things to her, Akane & Takada then both go home holding hands. I wonder now how this will continue.

Wow, another fantastic episode that had a nice mix of comfiness and emotional moments. It's more or less what I expected, with Akane's mom having passed away, and I still believe that Taiyou is in a very similar situation with his family, since we haven't seen his parents yet, or even any of his family for that matter. Great that he realized that the "Grim Reaper" was a derogatory term, and that Akane was being bullied all this time. I love the dynamic between these two, and whether or not there's romance there, I don't think I would really mind. It continues to be one of my favourite shows of the season.

Ah, but of course they would end up going to the same place. ^_^

It's interesting that while Taiyou does realize the implications of the "Grim Reaper" nickname, their class is actually unaware of the circumstances with her mother.

And damn, the music for the final scene with the fireflies had such Silent Christmas vibes, it almost brought a tear to my eye as well, to the point that I immediately had to check who the composer was for this series' music, and no wonder, it's Masuda Toshio here as well.

Wow....that left me teary eyed. Kindling of first love is so adorable!!!

Pretty obvious that they would meet up, however the truncates of events and the revelation about her mother was well thought out and portrayed. Just a very wholesome and cute anime. Getting to be rare these days.

Oh and the "clueless" friend trope is a sign that there is some great plot writing. To rework a one-shot gag like this takes skill.

Felt like I watched an episode of Non Non Biyori with all this countryside goodness, it only enhanced the greatness of this episode, and Nishimura’s reaction to the watermelon really sounded like Renge to me too lol. I had a feeling Takada would end up being in the same place as Nishimura giving he used to live in the countryside before moving to the city, but I didn’t expect him to know her grandma too lol. And speaking of grandma, I love how she was trolling Nishimura’s dad about Nishimura and Takada being alone lol, she knows too much.

And damn the realization from Takada about calling Nishimura the grim reaper was really good, I guess that debunks what some folks thought about Takada trolling the other students at school on purpose, but that was a really great moment. I also felt for Nishimura giving what happened to her mom, I had a feeling that was the case but didn’t think much on it until now.

Now I’m wondering if Takada will defend Nishimura differently at school or not, as sweet as it’s been so far this’ll be interesting change to see.

How dare they hit me with another touching episode. Takada is a lot more than just a playful boy, he actually thinks and cares a lot for his friends, specially Akane. He thought that calling her cool for being a 'Shinigami' was a careless act as a friend and made him cry shows that he really is a true friend.

So the classmates did know that her mother was dead and that why they called shinigami or was it a coincidence?
My doubt comes from the point Nishimura says she never told anyone before, so not sure if the class knows.

It felt fitting that Akane's Grandma lives in the same rural town that Taiyou used to live in until he moved, so it was only natural that Akane and Taiyou would reunite once again thanks to him finding the runaway Kuro.

Akane's Grandma is very kind, but I do like how she easily made her own son, Akane's father, get all worked up and panicking as he can't stop thinking about his own daughter and Taiyou being more than just "friends". He'll get over this at some point, but for now, seeing him like this does make me laugh! XD

One thing I wasn't expecting was the tone shift that this episode did with a few minutes left. With Akane and Taiyou visiting her family grave, she tells him that this is where her mother was resting after she sadly died shortly after giving birth to her, which made her think that she was born to replace her mother. This hit Taiyou very hard, where after learning about Akane's past, he actually burst out crying after realising that the "Grim Reaper" nickname that he used for her since he thought it was cool was now something he regrets. I won't deny that it did make me shed a tear. ='(

It'll be interesting to see how he'll interact with Akane from here on out. Overall, this episode was great. I do love the countryside setting during the Summer, as it gives off Non Non Biyori vibes for me, but it also had some solid character development as well.

This episode brought tears to my eyes. To respond to such news from Nishimura with sensitivity as Tadaka did, really did a number on me. How fortunate it must be to have a friend who not only can reflect on their past behavior, but also consider the impact it may have on another person. I'm looking forward to next week's episode and how their relationship will progress.

I'm surprised they actually made Takada realize the "grim reaper" thing could be cruel...

still not related to the bullying the others kids do to her, though... since they don't know about her mother, Takada probably is still oblivious to the fact they were intentionally being mean to her

Loved it. I never got tired of Nishimura, plus when Takada showed up with Kuro in her grandma's house, she was quite surprised. I wonder whether her father will take it normally or not.

I'm glad Takada finally got a clue of what he was doing all along. This would indeed make their bonds stronger.
