Got a lot of background storytelling this episode, probably more than any others in this episode. Ai as a kid, he acts how a kid would act as his age. More importantly, he had a history with a girl named Ilvia in his past.

The most tragic part of the episode is a volcano errupting...yikes. Poor Ilvia...

There can always be a Fal or Ruri around, but you always will NOT forget your childhood friend. And for Wayne, it's Ilvia.

Wayne's past of a typical farmer's family life, he's living like the typical child. But the encounter with a girl going around the fields to steal vegetables, it's the feeling of having your hard work being stolen, and Wayne takes it on his part to feed Ilvia every day, despite also feeling hungry at times. Even as the farmers claim her to be sold to the slave traders, his dad repaid their losses in full, knowing full well that he'll get the usual scolding. That's when they decide to take her in for the rest of her life.

Being the farming nut that he is, Wayne sure works hard. But now also being a family of 4, they need to find better living quarters. A treasure hunt with Testa while managing Ilvia not to join him along, and Testa revealing that their move being related to Ilvia's harsh treatment in the village, and it's time for them to move on sooner or later.

Regardless, the treasure area mark that revealed both a monster and an erupting volcano that covered their entire village in ash, and things get hard immediately with Wayne suffering from malnutrition. Iivia, wanting to help Wayne, tries to steal vegetables as she would've done before, but opposed to get rations instead and feed Wayne the best that she could. This happened every day, until she could not hold on no longer and is pronounced dead due to malnutrition.

Ilvia's selflessness really is commendable, and it's sad that she passed on, and Wayne's promise to her, to keep working hard at farming.

Potentially the best episode so far, but at the cost of coming this late.

I didn't expect this show to become sad like that, what a tragic disaster that happened but Al Wayna was really kind and generous back then it's even sadder that Ilvia died by trying to feed him this time compared to when it was him that did it for her back then :'( RIP

Ok, well that got dark.
Love the background development, though. I like that Al's always been exceptional at farming, and his mother has always been a badass.

I'm surprised that Ilvia was voiced by Yukari Tamura. Was kinda expecting a miracle happening at the end such as reviving Ilvia but I guess it didn't happen. The dead can't be revived.

i never thought al would have such a sad backstory. he already liked farming before, but it makes sense why he's so attached/devoted to being a farmer now. he wants to make sure there's always plenty of food. i hope he gets a happy ending:(

Woah, this show got a lot more tragic than I thought it would.

This episode goes into Al's backstory with a girl named Ilvia. And uh, Ilvia is dead. During a volcano-induced famine, she went without her meager rations, giving them to Al, and eventually starved herself to death. And said volcano eruption might've even been caused by Al. Jeez, and here I thought this show was light-hearted.

We also see something enter Al, making him sick for a time. I'm thinking it has something to do with the Malevolent Dragon Ouroboros. But that's just a theory.

Now, this was an unexpected but pleasant episode. I was wondering if it was the right anime considering how good the episode was, even though it was a backstory one. We finally know how the great farmer came to be and that he had a talent for farming even at a young age, little did he know he would be distanced from his passion and start going on heroic quests. The only thing I'm curious about is if that strange CGI thing that ate him is the reason he got strong powers.

I feel like Ilvia's death was completely unnecessary, except for plot reasons. It wasn't like they had to choose who can eat and who can't, everyone got rations, even if it was very little.

Exactly lol

What grinds my gear the most was young Al somehow didn't ask any other villager to make sure whether the royal capital's help is really there or not.

It's not like his illness is a damaging one that doesn't let him move at all.

I didn’t expect this show to tackle a serious plot and do it well, this definitely hits the feels a little bit. Seeing Wayne’s backstory with Ilvia not only shows his roots with farming (get it?) but also shows why he still sticks to farming to this day. I’m sure some personal enjoyment is there but after seeing this episode it’s very clear it’s not the only reason.

Ilvia was really sweet too, her death was a sad one with the buildup to it. Of course I bet she’s still alive somehow, or she’ll get resurrected, I don’t think this show will leave it sad like that, and honestly I’m not sure if I want it to stay sad either because as I’ve said before, this show is best when it’s goofy lol.

Not to mention, her not eating would have become pretty obvious long before death. There is no way he wouldn't have noticed. I am also wondering if this anime really needed such a backstory, the seriousness seems so sudden for what this series has been.

I've been enjoying this series but this episode gets a thumbs down from me. The main story is threadbare enough without devoting an entire episode to explaining where the dragon came from or whatever turns out to be the real reason for this episode.

The show didn't earn the emotional payoff of the Ilvia subplot. She hasn't exactly been a fixture of the series, at least as far as I can remember. It would be one thing if her death was what caused our hero to become a farming machine. It wouldn't really make sense since a lack of farming skills on his part isn't what doomed Ilvia, but it would at least have developed his character in an interesting direction as someone tormented by his past failures and driven to obsession as a result.

Instead he was portrayed as being obsessed with farming before he even met her for basically no reason. That could be played for laughs...but not in an episode where a little girl sacrifices herself. Presumably the mere fact he was bedridden was supposed to communicate that without her share of rations he would have died himself but it all seems a bit contrived.

It takes weeks to die of malnutrition and he was bedridden the whole time and he never noticed she was starving and neither did anybody else (though at least this last bit you can chalk up to malice given how quickly the villagers were prepared to sell her into slavery at the start). You'd think his friend, the person most responsible for the volcanic eruption, would have been looking out for her but nope.

In summary it was sad, it was sweet, it was stupid, and ultimately that twenty seconds in the cave is the only necessary bit of exposition to take forward into the final episodes.

Finally a fine little serious story. But, okay, so that's the whole sad story, eh? I may write a pile bunch of essay about how things looks wrong with the flow of the backstory and how shit they were from the beginning till the end. But i refuse, for the sake of a loli death. Rest in peace and yeah, all in all, let's continue again, shall we?

This show is pathetic, playing the tear-jerker of the little girl caracther that came out of the Blue. With a weak sad backstory and without any explanation! It's like, it takes several days, weeks to die of starvation and MC who wasn't that badly hurt didn't notice anything?! Give me a break!

And what about Testa? Were da fudge was he? Jerking off somewhere? No seriously. Were that fvck was he? What was he doing? Wasn't Ilya a friend? Did he not visit Al's once during all the time he was in bed?! This part the show answered it for me, when Al ask but didn't help from the capital arrived yet? And this fvcktard Testa replies, what help? There hasn't been any word from the capital, or something on those lines.

What a sport this Testa guy really is! Without a doubt a true friend!

Give me a break 2.0

The animation is still average but it was still enjoyable for some reason. The background story of the two was animated well. It could've been better but... (ᗒᗩᗕ)
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

So am I the only one that thinks Al is to blame for Ilvia dying? If he never went to those ruins neither would his friend go. Also he stayed in bed for at least 3 days straight and was fooled by Ilvia like it was normal to have supplies delivered so fast and his parrents to not know about this and head straight back home at the same time as those supplies were sent. Whatever... I was rating this show a 7 before this episode now i feel it was written by a 12 yo for a 5 yo.

I thought he was kinda joking when he said he has a girl in his mind, like maybe he could try to mean a gender of his veges. Wow, that things turn out quite dark. I wish she at least have a bite or two. It's not like cannot eat at all. Well, just show how much she loves Al I guess. I feel like this will be the only good episode in the whole series. So peace without the girls.
