| THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- I seen the movie at Fantasia, this was really good. We find the same theme of the author and she control perfectly. It's beautiful, it's well done, a touching story that leaves us guided in this adventure story which is very refreshing. The naimation was really good. 8/10 |
| Also thought it was alright. The beginning is very clumsy and it takes a bit for the film to let the characters breathe and get you interested in them. Even then it all feels a bit dry even though I liked the overall story and themes. One thing you can tell is that the directors worked with Miyazaki a lot because the influences are very clear, the animation and designs pay a lot of tribute to Princess Mononoke. |

| it goes without saying that i enjoy everything from or adapted by nahoko uehashi, so this is a 9/10. reminded me of mononoke hime, one of my favorites. it was all amazing, surprisingly good soundtracks and animation. i felt that it would have been better if the film was lengthened, in fact while watching it, i thought i'd much rather see the king of deer as a tv cour instead. very fast. there was so much i had wanted it to explore, including the characters. flashbacks of the conflicts and war between the aquafa and zol would be nice. but such is the difficulty of turning novels to a film that goes for a tight pace. |
| This was a really enjoyable movie, I love the historical fantasy setting and the atmosphere. The music was so good as well! I agree that this would have benefited from being longer, or maybe even a two part movie. We are thrown right into the story, the history briefly explained at the beginning, but hard to remember when there are terms you don't know. However, I still think they did a great job with the time they had, and I found myself easily liking the characters. Hohsalle being sort of like the narrator throughout the whole journey to the Fire Horse Village was a very interesting and a good choice. I'm also a huge sucker for familial relationships, it was so touching to hear Van talk about Yuna. The line where Van said that although Yuna can't chew very well, her mouth is full of smiles T_T that was so beautiful. I also cried at the end when Van leaves Yuna, and Yuna asks when will he be back. The final scene as well, her smile when she sees Olaha. The only other Uehashi work I've seen is Seirei no Moribito, and I just love the way there's no actual "big bad" in the story, and it ends in kind of like a, life goes on feeling, and she's not trying to solve any problems. Just merely telling a story. Shika no Ou definitely deserves a rewatch in the future, and I think it'll be an easier watch as well since I won't be actively trying to remember the names and the history XD |

| @alwoff I agree with most everything you say about this movie. The thing is, none of that matters if I can't watch an episode of Moribito without falling asleep. I plan to read the novels after I further improve my Japanese. 10 volumes is surely enough for a developed setting and characters. Production I.G should have adapted more if they wanted to air 26 episodes. I just found out my public library has The Beast Player in English. I guess I'll read it now. EDIT: After finishing The Beast Player, I now believe movies to be the ideal form for adapting Uehashi's works. The Deer King may have benefitted from an additional 20 minutes, but neither it nor The Beast Player needed a full 12 episodes for their respective stories. |

| This was a weird case of a work that feels like it has a lot and nothing going on at the same time. The pacing, much like the plot, also feels fast and slow simultaneously. Overall it was ok for me, but not very memorable nor rewatchable. Nothing really bad in it, but most people would definitely prefer be watching Princess Mononoke, Sword of the Stranger or Seirei no Moribito instead. |

| Truly amazing movie. Not everyone's cup of tea since it only appeals to those who like a slow pace of life. Pretty much down to earth. Bawled my eyes out for Van's commitment to his ideals as a father. A man worthy of the title Deer King. |

| Pretty nice world building and scenery porn, Production IG putted a lot of work in the visuals here. The story and the characters kind of reminded me of Seirei no Moribito and Kemono no Souja Erin. One negative comment tho - somewhere in the beginning of the movie the doctor was examining a body and that used the same gloves to remove his face cloth...now that's a big no-no. He should've put the gloves away (for washing). |

| Good movie, but it would have deserved a series adaptation instead of a movie Erin and Moribito are masterpieces because they're well-developed and take their time to build up the characters, the story and the worldbuilding. The Deer King has, no doubt, the same qualities, however the movie format just doesn't fit. So yeah, a movie with great production values and a great original material, but too rushed. It its way, it makes me think a lot about Tales from Earthsea, which suffered from the same problems of adapting a full novel into a single movie. |
| The final act fell a bit flat for me, but for the most part I was enjoying this movie. Also, it was reminding me of a lot of other things, all of which are things that I like. The ending song is even sung by Milet who sung my favorite "Vinland Saga" ED song (and "Vinland Saga" was one of the aforementioned things that this reminded me of at certain parts), which I was not aware of going in, but I had a feeling I recognized her voice. Just like there were familiarities about this that had me checking if Nahoko Uehashi was responsible for "The Deer King" in some way and lo and behold I was right. She does like to include specific elements in her all of her stories. |

| A father's love is unconditional. 💜 I was eating popcorn and enjoying this with a new sound bar and the goosebumps it gave was unreal! My goodness, the atmosphere is beautiful. From the breezy hillside to the trickling rivers and songbirds caroling through the woodland. I could feel the warm sun and the dire need to see peace reign in this world. Love the characters and the overall message. Using hatred as a literal infectious disease is an interesting concept. Particularly regarding the children who were willing to infect themselves in honor of their village. This movie did such a good job of illustrating the entanglements of culture and beliefs. Which made it easy to gravitate towards Yugraul's character. The respect he has for the villages and their people, while introducing knowledge and compassion for the sick. The cure for the Black Wolf Fever wasn't obvious at first, something else that drew me in. This gave weight to Yugraul's mission as a doctor and credibility to his experience. Then there's Daddy Van whom I couldn't get enough of. The moments between him and Yuna are too precious! That's a thumbs up for me! |
