Oh boy, a sword that is cursed.

And not only that but that sword has been passed down for generations. For what's worth, weapons in this series should always be something to watch out for. This is just another challenge in life that Dororo should be careful of.

Still wonder, how Hyakkimaru can fight so well without any senses. And still be able to recognize Dororo, or she was just lucky this time!?
Well, from the beginning they gave us some hint of what he will get in the end of the episode. Waiting for all Hyakkimaru's senses to come back. The main one should be one of the last, or it won't be as interesting as now.

Going to war and coming back a different person, unrecognizable to those you left for.. It's nothing new but I still really enjoyed this episode, as far as self-contained eps go I think this was pretty great. Fourth episodes are usually kinda meh in my experience and this didn't feel that way, not with that action, sexy art direction and animation. Looking forward to seeing how Hyakkimaru reacts to Dororo's voice haha, it should be a very good driving force for further development between them. Feel kinda bad tho, a broken woman crying and wailing over her dead brother isn't... Exactly what I'd want to hear for my first time hearing. Hyakki has it rough always man. Oh and I loved how the episode starting with Hyakki listening to the rain and ended with him listening to the rain. Fits really well with both his situation and the themes of the story.

Does anyone know the significance of the two paper cranes at the end? And also, what the red one is symbolizing (cuz the red one got significant screen time)? I know the usual 1000 paper cranes grants you a wish and eternal good luck. But I think there was something more to it than just that.

So there's this woman who has been searching for her brother for a long time, and suddenly and conveniently just finds her brother all of a sudden. They got reunited and just almost immediately gets killed of all in a single episode. This was a rushed episode for me.

Anyway, I like how he got his hearing back now.

Great episode again.

Felt bad for the girl as she's now lost all her family. :(
Seems like the brother just wanted to die cause he saw no way to repent.

Action sequences were awesome as always.
Hyakkimaru has his hearing back, looking forward to see how he adjusts to being able to hear now.

Well, surely this is a well done episode, although personally I think it's weaker compared to the previous ones. This episode surely has a hella good sword fight, the best one this series has offered us so far. My only complain is how rushed this episode is, at least for me. Also, till the end of the episode I kept questioning "Where tf does the blind old man go ? Didn't see him for entire episode"

First thing he does after getting nerves back is stomp on a fire out of spite for the pain.

Can't wait for him to gouge his own ear drums out just because that rain is a little too loud.

So this series is gonna be a lot more episodic than I initially thought, I guess. Not that I'm complaining. The only bad part about these mini-stories is that you don't get a lot of detail. Bad sword is bad. Kill guy with bad sword.

That being said, still the best series of this season by far.

Every single episode of this anime has been nothing short of perfection so far! I'm so happy that Hyakkimaru can finally hear! He and Dororo will finally have some form of communication. It's really sad though that the first thing he ever heard was that sound of grief.

Only a matter of time now before Hyakkimaru can fully communicate with Dororo, wich is not the direction i wanted it to go, i tought that Hyakkimaru not being able to communicate had it's own charm.
It's not the end of the world tho i expect some funny interactions now that Hyakkimaru is able to hear and also when he eventually will be able to talk.

The brother was cursed by the sword to draw blood, I assumed that he was always going towards his home village just because he is a 100% sure that there will be people to draw blood from, yes I am saying he was going to kill his sister from the moment he got the curse. Because like I said he knows for a fact that blood is there in his village.

Love it!

Apart from that I think it's very interesting, that the first what Hyakkimaru felt was pain and the first what he heard was crying. I'm a bit afraid of what he will see, if he will regain his sight.

Great episode!

Hyakkumaru’s got his ears back, he’ll be able to hear the noise of rain now but more importantly that’s the 4th out of the missing 12. Honestly, I’m a sucker for such Samurai-esque settings with crude realities so I’m totally content with this episode, only thing I found a little bugging is where’s the blind old man. Could they have seperated ways? If so, why not spend like a short 30s clip on it at the very least? Dat aside though, great action scenes, perhaps the best of the series do far, this episode! Hyakkumaru’s battling abilities are top-notch and we saw more of that in this episode. Poor Brother though, that backstory was harsh and death was his only salvation there I’m sure. At least he made one of those paper cranes though, so I’m assuming that’s his way of apologising to his younger sister or something of the sort. Final scene after the ED showing a short clip on this exactly was very pleasing to have! Dororo nearly blew it but thanks to Hyakkumaru, she was just about within the safe zone. The Emperor’s, as in Hyakkumaru’s biological father, little scene there though, was it of the past or the present? Something about the whole scene, especially one of his men saying “Baby”, gave me the impression that it’s actually of the past and that infuriates me even more. A small final mention of midwife too but it seems as though they haven’t really figured out what exactly happened and well can’t blame them, she was literally eaten in one gulp after all back in episode 1.

Looking forward to the next episode!

This episode felt like it was rushed for me, and it went dark and depressing quickly. This might happen because of how the anime shortened Hyakkumaru’s body parts from 48 to 12 (episodes)
The action sequence was pretty great, so a bonus point for that! I also realized that the old blind man isn’t in the episode, but I wasn’t really paying attention to him anyways.
I also like how Hyakkumaru got his hearing ability, so I’m really curious about what will happen in the next episode. You see...the more body parts given back to Hyakkumaru, the more I’m interested to see more episodes.

For my opinion, it was a decent episode. I’ll rate it 3.9/5. I’m still expecting a better episode than this, cause this episode was the weakest one so far.

Dororo has started calling Hyakkimaru 'aniki' like a Yakuza. lol. It is quite cute in its own way.

The rain was so beautifully made. In my opinion, the art in this anime is the best this season. The art director needs to be given a raise!

I love the way Hyakkimaru can communicate with the audience, despite lacking speech and facial expressions. Whoever decided to make that change should be also be given a raise.

The brother died with a smile.

Did the girl die as well? It seemed that way in the post credits scene.

What is the father going to do, I wonder. I feel like he's the antagonist. Can't tell if Hyakkimaru's little brother will be a villain or not, but the hairstyle makes me think he will cause trouble.

Hyakki's ears are back. I wonder how long it'll take him to understand speech.

It is like that in the manga. Actually this episode is almost a verbatim adaptation from the same episode in the manga. Almost.

I want to protect Hyakkimaru, all the new things he gets to experience when getting back a limb, a sense, anything that was taken from him is pain. Yet he never stops fighting. That's courage, and perseverance,

The fights were too short imo. I'm pretty sure tanousuke survives his first encounter with hyakkimaru with dororo claiming the sword and going mad, somewhat like what happened here, but more intense. There were issues with pacing too. While I loved this episode, I do wish the rest of the series does a few other things that this one didn't.

If you noticed from the other episodes, the form of their souls have the same size of their bodies so he recognizes from those forms. Besides, Dororo's soul is one that keeps company to him everyday so it's easier to recognize from there and from personal behavior/reactions, etc.

Exactly my question... I liked the old man in the group to be honest... Plus I wished to have Hyakkimaru be a bit annoyed with his hurt foot. XD

Due to this and more I felt it was kinda rushed and more "episodic" style. The first 3 didn't looked that much so I guess it ruined the pace a little. However that didn't killed my excited to see a new episode and know what part of his body Hyakkimaru would get! We could feel his perception of his body changing which is beautiful to see though it's sad that the first thing he heard was a woman crying in grief...

One more week for the next!

Red is color of Monsters.

2 very subtle details

1.The brother was going to kill his sister, i am sure of it, but he left that paper crane because, even though he became a monster, he still has a fraction of humanity and, just maybe, could break free from the sword's control

2.What is the first thing Hyakkimaru hears?Crying and Rain, powerful moment and message, interpret it as you want

He did not try to get his sister and there was still some humanity left with him, as he left Osushi an origami. This is also why he is not red, as he did not completely turn into a monster in human disguise. That said he was the one who made the curse revive itself (could be said it was just a sword until people started committing crimes and genocides with it, passing it down the generations. After all, most evil is still driven by humans, demons are mostly taking form as a manifestation of their misdeeds and sins). Which is why when he is finally cut down he is smiling, knowing his living nightmare is over and he won't be feeding anyone else to that cursed sword.

Honestly this series sorta feels like Mushishi in the sense of wandering traveller dealing with various problems, although this has more of an overarching plot to it

I also like how this ep was pretty much void of OST. While it's not always the best thing to have, I felt this ep was done pretty well in that regard

They changed way too much the story in this one. First off too much exposition. Second Dororo in the original gets gradually possessed by the sword after he returns for it because he wants to be cool like Hyakamaru . Is interesting how he tries to bargain with the sword first killing some animals and then trying to kill humans. And the fact the sword was cursed from the beginning is left ambiguous in the original. The curse seems to have come mostly from being forced to kill the workers he supervised and shared meals with. Also in the original he gets an eye if I am not mistaken and Dororo promises never to wear a sword

I bet Dororo is the only one that survives after the whole narrative. Which makes perfect sense for Dororo to be the narrator. Expected bodycount - Blind monk, Jukai, Mother, Father of Hyakkimaru, Hyakkimaru.

Tanosuke was doomed ever since he was forced to kill someone with the sword, as soon it drew ''first blood'', it started to affect him and he was a goner basically.

That might have happened for Dororo as well but he got lucky, he didn't end up cutting someone for blood.

Tanosuke died with a smile on his face, he's free from the sword and probably had the happiest moment right there. I feel for his sister.

The first thing Hyakkimaru hears is the rain and tears from a woman, i think not essentially that he heard but WHAT he heard made him keep his ears shut. That's not a nice thing to hear at first.
