One of my personal favorite anime movies. I liked how Miyazaki took an already established franchise and made such a charming movie out of it, early evidence of his directing prowess.

This was a great movie indeed! This is what happens when you mix Lupin III, Tomb Raider and 007 into the same story. And with the skills of the director it can only turn out to be good!

I can't believe I didn't pick up this before, having watched practially almost all of Miyazaki's works until now, this movie still remains fresh and entertaining, on par with the likes of Spirited Away and Porco Rosso and better than Howl's Moving Castle and Kiki's Delivery Service on my book.

Randomly watched this on Netflex today.
Yep. A pretty darn good exciting movie we've got here!
Now I'm interested in Lupin's other adventures, but I doubt I'll touch it since it's such a long series :/

Definitely a step up from the first movie.
Although the age difference was kinda bleh, Clarisse was so pure and the decisions that Lupin made in this movie were great. It was probably due to the fact that Miyazaki was directing the film that it was so lovely.

An all around solid film. This pretty much convinced me to pick up the Lupin series in the future. I was entertained whole way, and Lupin is such a likable and actual intelligent character. Good stuff.

A solid 8/10.

It's been a while since I've enjoyed a movie this much. Without proper knowledge about any of the characters, it still succeeded in drawing my attention and holding it untill the end. As mentioned before, for a late 1970's movie, this was really well done. A solid 8 from me.

Really entertaining, loved the action sequences.

The detail on the backgrounds was just... stunning. I myself became totally immersed into the film's little world.

And yes - fun as heck, really entertaining. That car chase sequence at the beginning was perfect.

Totally loved this film. As a special note I would like to tip my fedora to the English cast, the voice acting was superb and it was really fitting for the European setting. I'll probably watch this with Japanese dub the next time I decide to watch this.

Such a fun ride, exactly what you want from an adventure film.

Not a dull moment, the OTT parts don't go overboard, engrossing plot, fantastic settings, beautiful soundtrack and everybody comes out a winner :D

Just really well put together.

The only Miyazaki film I was missing and it deserves all the love it has gotten over the years. The animation is fluid (that car chase!), the backgrounds detailed and gorgeous and the story rolls by in what seems a flash. One is completely immersed in it. And I loved the ending

Impressive debut from Miyazaki. Tight script, beautiful background art and OST, and just a fun flick overall.

I hear this movie doesn't exactly capture the tone of the so-called "green jacket" original TV series, so I'll check that out to see how it is without Miyazaki's direction.

Lupin TV is a show of two halves. It starts off (first ~1/3) more adult but with strange storytelling that I didn't feel really hit the mark very often. Then Miyazaki and Takahata gradually take over and it gets more enjoyable but family friendly.

Lupin has made me a happy man.

The end was disappointing, but KFC's gotta start somewhere.

Despite that, Lupin was SSSSUUUUCH A FUCKING MAN HERE OH MY GOD

STRAIGHT TO MY FAVOURITES YOU GO, LUPIN

And now that I learned that Master KFC directed this, I now understand the reason for my discontent.

SHIT

It's WAY too Ghibli-esque. The original green-jacket Lupin feel was almost non-existent. But to make up for it, it was GREAT to see Zenigata and Lupin working together. Shit!

Just wished Goemon had more of a role to play.

Boy Zenigata with the one liners at the end. This was made in 1979?! Fanfreakingtastic!!! This could almost pass for a modern day movie.

Great classic Lupin story, and the fact that Miyazaki did this only adds to the charm. Solid 8/10 for me, I must get the blu-ray of it.

Animation wise the movie is great and all but quite frankly i thought it lacked "oomph". It's fine film but it's not one that i would watch again or remember fondly.

Plus the ending was bit of downer because it didn't really make sense to me that the underwater city wouldn't show during a clear day and the villains death was bit shoddy.

Anyone read that the original creator, 'Monkey Punch' is supposed to have said that he would rather have Clarisse raped at the end, if he was directing? As it seems happened in one of the series, which indicates the difference between that and Miyazaki's... but really, how many more viewers would a creator get by spouting such a statement? Misogyny, really.

Miyazaki's Lupin isn't the real "Lupin the 3rd" (it lacks the grit, violence and sexuality), but this is still one of the funnest and best films I've ever seen. Not just anime, but any film medium. 10/10!

How did you fare with The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, Lupin III (2015) and contemporary Lupin in general, might I ask? Older Lupin doesn't mesh well with me, but I find contemporary Lupin strikes a great balance between wackiness and seriousness. Plus, the art/sound aspects are phenomenal.

I'm a fan of Miyazaki's Lupin, personally, because it dials back the wackiness, but at the same time, it dials back the heart of Lupin. The Woman Called Fujiko Mine was the peak for me.

Very nice! Watched this with @Anisound and @Contralyss today. I was hooked the entire time through. The music is great, art so beautiful, comedy on point and fun storyline. I admit it was a bit mild compared to the usual Lupin I've watched but still fun regardless. Definitely need to watch more in the future.

Although I had enough heard about good things of this movie, but initially I was feeling doubtful due to very awful first Lupin movie(which also came year ago this movie's release). However thankfully this movie felt for me more like sequel to Lupin first show(which was great) with exceptional soundtracks! Everything from start to end was so stimulatingly made and also to think this was actually Miyazaki's first movie debutant...

Very rewarding stuff truly and 10/10, would love to experience this surrealism again.

Despite being different from the classic story that awaits us from an anime in which the character of Lupine 3rd is present, I still love this film. Less pulp in favor of romance and mystery, the story is highlighted so that you almost do not notice the protagonist and what he does, but it is the evolution of history that involves the attention. To resolve this aspect, however, think about the many sudden twists and daring moves of the protagonist. Great design style and backgrounds, and let's not forget the soundtrack.

Been meaning to get to this forever now in wanting to get my hands on more of Miyazaki's work. Lots of trademarks are here and it was a fun bombastic and joyus time. The animation and sleek style for a 70's work is jaw dropping. The story itself all comes together in the third act and for someone who hasn't watched much Lupin, made me really want to explore more of the movies if not some of the television series.

8/10 no doubt.

Just wanna jump in here and shout my love for this movie. Easily one of the most influential things on me as a child. And to this day I still think of it extremely fondly. It's disappointing that no other lupin movie or series quite holds up to the quality, but it was enough to make me fall in love with the franchise regardless.

Miyazaki's directorial debut film, and what a marvelous movie it is! There's so much to love here, the iconic OST, the animation, the direction, the scenery, the setting. It was all so well done. Even the characters and their dynamics were in top form.

To cite a few of my favorite moments: the opening sequence after the casino heist with that beautiful song, Jigen using "force" to make Lupin speak, Zenigata teaming up with Lupin to escape that hellhole, Fujiko telling Clarisse about her complicated relationship with Lupin, then giving them fire support while Lupin tried to rescue Clarisse, Goemon cutting Lupin's clothes, which were on fire, and saying that he had cut something unworthy, Zenigata's terrible acting while showing the world the counterfeit bills after teaming up with Lupin and his team again, Jigen wearing Clarisse's crown over his hat after being called "Jigen-sama", and Fujiko getting away with something valuable in the end. Nothing else to say I guess, just that I was moved by this movie once again and that this is Lupin at its best.

Good movie, the story held me so much that the animation I left aside, the film was produced in 1979 the animation was good, so far maybe it is devalued today but I liked the characteristics, the story manages to balance with the proposal of comedy and drama, good characters, but some were left aside by the protagonist being more developed.

On this past December 15, Castle of Cagliostro is now 40 years of age since it was released on Japanese cinemas back in 1979.

I have re-watched it for the first time since 2015 and I had finished some minutes ago, it's still one of the finest animated movies ever made and a absolutely essential work in the Lupin the III Franchise (while I should note, that the TV series of Part 1, 2 and 4 are indeed better starting points to the franchise, even if my introduction to Lupin the III was on this movie).

I have nothing to say positively that was not said already on here, I only want say that I wholeheartedly recommend this Work of Art, to any enthusiasts of Animation & Cinema in general.

Gotta agree with this. Having watched a few episodes of Lupin season 2 and the entirety of Part IV and Part V, this movie seems like a regular Lupin story albeit with very creative action set pieces and some beautiful backgrounds. The princess in this case has less depth than many of the other damsels in other Lupin stories. While Fujiko was probably the most likable out all her incarnations here, Jigen and Goemon aren't given much to do. It doesn't help that the Pioneer voice actors aren't providing the voices here because their work contributes to a huge part of the chemistry and charm of the Lupin crew.

Having heard so much praise for this movie I thought Miyazaki would insert more emotional depth to a series that's lacking it but this movie only doubles down on doing what the franchise does well already--- exciting action and a fast moving plot. I'd say it's pretty comparable to any of the arcs in Part V.

As for The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, I'd agree with the reviews that say the characters and tone feel off. It's telling that I still say this even though I watched that series before I watched any other entry into the series.

This movie is very fun and enjoyable, Of course I feel like you need to watch at least half of original Lupin III, to understand some things better. I really liked the animation at some parts and the music was a fantastic thing to listen to. The characters in the movie are good, but I didn't liked main villian that much, but its the 70s so its understandable why some things are so simply made without much dept. However I just loved it when Lupin called him ''Lolita loving count'', or at least thats what he said in the sub I watched.

With the fact that this is Miyazakis first film he directed, It's a great one I can say.

Despite is obvious flaws and lack of great villian, the movie still holds strong to this day, with its memorable chase scenes and gorgeous music. I just can't give this film a 9 but it is very close to that rating so I'l give it a 8.4/10

Wanted to watch more green jacket Lupin, after having finished both Part 1 and Fuma Ichizoku no Inbo, as well as about three cours of Part 2 and Part 3.

Already, I can see what people meant by "It lost the jazzy music" when talking about Fuma Ichizoku no Inbo. Having the usual seiyu instead of the randos (Yes, I'm calling my dear Toshio Furukawa a rando) is a relief, though the artstyle is not quite right here. It just looks weird as hell, Lupin specifically. I really preferred how Fuma Ichizoku no Inbo looked, lifting the artstyle from Part 1, but with significantly better animation. In terms of which I thought was better overall... I dunno. I think they're equal. I've never been too good at judging movies, it ain't as easy to gauge quality with them like it is with TV anime.

I really liked that when Lupin flashed back to 10 years prior, they managed to seamlessly recontextualize a scene from the 1969 pilot.

Still, no better or worse than Fuma Ichizoku no Inbo in my eyes, even though most people on the internet think otherwise. 8.25/10
