It’s actually quite amazing that there's someone else, within the inner palace itself, who does stuff or is quite interested in stuff which even makes Maomao curious about her. Though Shisui isn’t on the same wavelength as Maomao, but I like how every now and then we do get to know a bit about her. She’d be in the focus in a potential next season, but yeah, it never hurts to see more of her right? She’s cheerful and all I mean. Btw, it might have become a usual thing by now, but yeah, the tone does change IMMEDIATELY in this series lol. Anything over former emperor takes a dark turn though however much you twist the words. I mean that man was a certified pedo, which is already a universal fact in this series, but yeah, the kind of impact he left over people, or more like trauma, even after his death tells a LOT about him. You can see the deep regret in Anshi’s voice. Though whatever she’s thinking might not be even remotely true, but yeah, the fact that man’s body didn’t even decay after his death is straight up from a horror movie. Can’t blame someone for thinking the way Anshi’s doing. Looking forward to how Maomao takes this up. |

Maomoa being warned was a tense scene but it seems she has another case to solve. Still you could see the importance they but on the guest it wasn't just making sure the place was spotless they even arranged ice which was something very hard to come by in those days unless you lived near mountains or other places with eternal snow or it was winter. Maomao also cleaned her face. Well it was to be expected seeing who the guest was. |

Another week. Another case for Maomao to solve, this time from the Empress Dowager herself and one of the more interesting ones. So the previous emperor was a straight up pedophile?! think that’s the first time I’ve ever seen an anime address that without making a “haha lolicon” joke about it. He legit preyed on younger girls while having all these beautiful adult women around, why? My very early prediction is that the emperor had some sort of mental deficiency similar to autism and so he was mentally closer in age to the girls in the palace rather than the adults. That explains why he stuck with his mom for so long and stayed in that room constantly too. Because she was so young, Anshi might not have noticed it. That room he was raised and died in was probably his comfort place as a lot of severely autistic people have, and it’s just where he preferred to spend time. That could be me reading way too deep into things but idk from the context clues I like it I love when we get these formal Maomao episodes where she’s all dolled up. She’s so stunning.. we also still have whoever taught shin about the abortion drug out there to deal with! |

Maomao: "Dont threaten me with a good time" Investigating the rumors so Maomao can disprove the allegations of her running around catching bugs. Lizards and plants, fine . But we draw the line on bugs. Maomao making a rundown prediction of the tea party, makes me wonder, if Loulan even talk in social events. |

The previous empress, Anshi is beautiful and young. She was very young when she gave birth to the current emperor after all. Noto Mamiko's voicing milfs as usual. Quite the request she got for Maomao. Another mystery for her to solve. Also how rude they mistook Shisui for Maomao, she ain't weird enough. |

@duck_butt-lol I've felt that way this season, too. But the past couple of episodes have gotten me feeling more invested now! It feels like now that Maomao has gotten directly involved with a mystery featuring the Emperor, and now the Emperor Dowager, the stakes are really rising. There was so much tension in the room in the scene where Maomao talked with the dowager, and I feel like that tension has the potential to keep rising and build up to some exciting moments later this season. And with the mystery surrounding whoever helped with the abortion drugs as well. I missed watching the first season as it came out and ended up binging it instead. Watching the second season as it comes out, the slow pace of some of these plotlines hasn't been as immediately satisfying and addictive, tbh. I hope everything they're setting up ends up having a pretty solid payoff. |

I love this story to bits, but sometimes they're really pushing it with presenting wild conjectures as fact from the get-go. It's even more irritating as the detective character in this very story repeatedly reminds us that this shouldn't be done (too bad the author didn't get the memo). Still, can't get enough of Maomao. |

More lore, this time about the dowager empress. Every mention of the former emperor turns my stomach: all the girls who fell into her clutches. Luckily, he died before he did anything to Lishu. As for what they revealed about Anshi, I can't even imagine how young she must have been, probably between 10 and 12, when she had the current emperor. That man was disgusting, and Anshi's hatred for him is completely justified - poor Anshi, for all he endured. I hadn't realized it in the previous episode, but even the previous emperor tried something underhanded with Jinshi as a child. I'm not sure what caused her death, but it's a relief that she's gone. As for the mystery of her death, it usually ends up being some kind of poisoning or intoxication, which is consistent with the detail that her body didn't decompose. PS: Could someone explain why Hongniang came down so hard on Maomao, saying that she hopes he won't betray Gyokuyou? I didn't quite understand what she meant. |

Our kitty as always exceeding my expectations with how smart she always is. As soon as the empress dowager asked her to look into the matter of "did the late emperor get cursed or not", i was surprised as to why Maomao hadn't immediately denied her statement, since there ain't no supernatural in the world she lives in. But few minutes later, and we immediately realize why the empress dowager actually thinks she cursed him, and with a very convincing explanation as well. Curious as to see how Maomao is gonna solve this one. |

@Narizor I could be mistaken, but since the concubines are rivals, she was afraid that the empress somehow involved her in a conspiracy against Gyokuyou. @Marinate1016 The Japanese distinguish between the terms Lolicon and pedophile. Therefore, she is unlikely to use this term when it comes to the actual pathology. |

"I merely voice facts from my limited pool of knowledge that I feel are appropriate for the situation." Excellent answer... Looks like both former emperor and empress were lowest of low life. Maybe some cycle of trauma is involved with empress manipulating emperor and his lolicon tendency. Clearly Empress Dowger and her ladies hate them very much for valid reasons. She might have given birth to Emperor in age of 10-15 range and his brother around 30ish. Something doesn't add up here as Maomao said. Some sort of drug to keep a body from rotting perhaps, I doubt Anshi curse worked but deserved. Maomao was looking down Shisui for insects after excited dancing when she got moved to store room as "punishment", double standard much. This came out of nowhere but real fun shit.. "Lady Hongniang really deserves the title of head lady-in-waiting for Lady Gyokuyou." As smart she is she needs a loyal able person to trust. And one quite interesting that they are comparing Slavery with prostitution. This show really put courtesans in high regard(comparatively) this is counter productive statement. And even in modern standards doesn't work. Well this arc should be good but I hope atleast by end Maomao connect dots and figure out who Jinshi is. |

@Alfilfieratore officially and so far upto anime knowledge Emperor's mother. But Maomao doens't know that. But she speculated Ah-duo and Anshi babies have been swapped. If that's right Jinshi is Emperor's son. |

The empress dowager founded an unofficial clinic run by court ladies? That looks a little suspicious to me... Or I might be just paranoid. I hope this new request from her doesn't get solved in an instant, as it looks like there could be a grand mystery with serious implications. Narizor said: Could someone explain why Hongniang came down so hard on Maomao, saying that she hopes he won't betray Gyokuyou? I didn't quite understand what she meant. I think she's just extremely protective of her mistress, which is nothing unusual. As Maomao points out, you don't get to become head lady-in-waiting without fierce loyalty and dedication. There was that other head lady-in-waiting in Season 1 who went to extreme lengths to cover up her crimes and protect her mistress (I think it was the concubine who was removed from the rear palace), to the point of poisoning another concubine (the youngest one with allergies) without being asked to. And in this madhouse, you can't be too careful. There's always danger lurking in the shadows and conspiracies afoot. |

Maomao is entering into some stuff she has no idea about. We're now getting into the Royal family drama here. Maomao being asked by the Empress Dowager to investigate something for her. Its interesting how the domino effect of this season so far has gone down, how word of Maomao detective skills have spread from Lihua to the Emperor and now the Empress Dowager. We have heard how the previous emperor had a proclivity for young girls, now learning just how young Lady Anshi was when she had the emperor and why her father had to be the specific one to deliver the baby. It was a lot of sacrifice but now the current emperor has grown up strong and seems like a good man. Lady Anshi interaction with Lady Gyoukyou was interesting too, they're definitely closer than most wives and mother in laws. But there's definitely a sense of respect there between them. The Empress Dowager inviting all the high ranking courtesan for an outdoor tea party back where her and the emperor live. Maomao having her own assignment of investigating where or not Lady Anshi placed A curse on the previous emperor with his body not decaying for a year. It's definitely peculiar but no doubt Maomao can figure out why beyond some superstitious curse. There's a lot of heavy family baggage and drama that has to be waded through. |

@RafaBryan She certainly seems to believe it herself. Hmm, what could keep a body from a natural rate of decay? It had to be a toxin. Also, his Empress died at roughly the same time, definitely a poison. You know she is interested! LOL |

Maomao has learned the secret art of negotiating...bribery. So it was the Empress dowager (current emperor's mother), Lady Anshi who founded the clinic, banned slavery, and banned the practice of making eunuchs...I had mistaken some of these acts as the previous Empress regnant's deeds. I think I'll just refer her as Lady Anshi going forward to avoid confusion. Good to know she was the one who was the more skillful and accomplished ruler. When Maomao mentioned that slavery still exists, just under a different name...I really felt that. Not just indentured servitude some people in the past willingly sold themselves into, but also even nowadays when we could be seen as slaves to the government depending on how you look at it, as no matter what we do, we'll also need to pay them taxes or be put in prison for it. Even if you own your own home paid off in full, you're still renting it from the government in the form of property taxes, and seized when you have no more heirs. Even after you die, an inheritance tax will need to be paid if you want your kids to inherit anything that you've saved. The way Maomao described herself to Lady Anshi reminds me a lot of Sherlock Holmes, where the preferred method of deductive reasoning is observational analysis of evidence, engaging more in the field to collect clues to solve mysteries. Compared to her adoptive father Luomen, being more of a Mycroft Holmes-type character with a more abstract and theoretical approach, drawing larger conclusions from less immediate data based on known facts along with his vast knowledge and intelligence. Very clever use of the vivid red sunset color-palette in the scene of Lady Anshi asking if she put a "curse" on the late Emperor. While reds can be seen as auspicious (among many other things) in Chinese culture, it's also closely associate with curses. It's also why Chinese calligraphy using red ink is very seldom used traditionally, as it can often be interpreted as you wishing a curse upon somebody. I wonder if the reason why Lady Anshi banned new eunuchs was because of what happened to Luomen during the birth of the current emperor. I'm willing to bet it was, because of what the best doctor in the country had to sacrifice in order to save both hers' and the baby emperor's life with the difficult c-section childbirth. Maomao looks so pretty wearing her tea party outfit again...I didn't think they'd ever bring it back since she first wore it during the garden party's poisoned soup assassination attempt, but I'm glad they did. Lady Anshi is quite skilled in political maneuvers...arranging for that tea party using her status to not require Maomao as the taster (as it would be seen as an insult to not trust the Empress), in order to allow for Maomao to investigate freely at her request. It shows she's been at it for a while, highly experienced in the upper class of society. @Narizor More lore, this time about the dowager empress. You're getting the pronouns wrong in a few places. The person who died and did NOT decompose was the former emperor. He was the only sexual predator here. The one who DID decompose and decayed into a skeleton was his mother who died shortly before he did; the empress regnant. |

The empress dowager and the late emperor, what could be the mystery behind them? This was certainly an interesting case for Maomao to get her hands on, with the empress dowager, Anshi approaching Maomao directly about a potential curse that the late emperor had received from herself. The late emperor was certainly a twisted individual, and his bad reputation still precedes him even as he is no longer alive. The colour palettes in the scene with Maomao and Anshi were very well done, and it definitely seems like this case will be a bit more dark than some of the previous ones. A lot on Maomao's plate, to be sure, going forward. |

@LordCrueltyV They called out a strange smell specifically, and arsenic has no smell. My guess is formaldehyde...has a smell, and fits with the paints they showed on the floor plus the slowed decay. As an aside, I love that there's enough information given to be able to speculate on the answer. The presence of actual clues is something a lot of "mystery" shows lack |

It would be for sure actually necessary a cesarian section would have been needed in this time period even if a very young birth. People's heads used to be smaller and the head is what winds up getting babies stuck. My speculation on the case of the emperor there was a paintbrush in the room and signs of paint so Im thinking it was paint with formaldehyde in it. |

Will probably get mentioned next week, but here's the manga panel if you want it: Remember that even though Maomao's working in the Jade Palace again, she's actually under Jinshi's command. |
