Real Reason Dandadan has a Female Protagonist is Because the Mangaka Thought “It would be more imaginative to draw something I didn’t know”

Yukinobu Tatsu chose a female lead for Dandadan to create unique conflicts, aiming to break traditional norms in manga storytelling.

Tatsu aimed to create a boys' manga centered around a female protagonist, believing it would lead to unique conflicts and narrative patterns.

The creator’s focus on Momo reflects a desire to break traditional norms in manga storytelling, giving female characters more prominent roles.

Tatsu sought a new challenge in portraying a female character, which pushed him to thoughtfully develop Momo Ayase’s character and design.

@Zarutaku just clarification and confirmation from the author himself since some manga readers are asking why okarun was missing on some future arcs

As a viewer, it’s so far been a complete 50/50 and it works great. I’m interested to hear how things develop, Momo is my current obsession and must never be dropped from an episode.

Exactly what I thought 🤷🏻‍♂️😅
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

I thought Turbo granny was the protagonist

Generally I like well written female protagonists, Claymore did a great job and DanDaDan is doing excellent so far

Was there ever any question regarding this? I thought it was clear from the start that Momo is the protagonist.

She was the first character to appear on screen, and her appearance isn’t linked to a character’s backstory.

That by itself was a dead giveaway.
It'll all be okay in the end. If you're not okay, it's not the end.

The synopsis should be a dead giveaway😅

Anyway, female lead can also be done really well in battle shounen, another example will be Frieren✍️🔥

Momo is a much more interesting and well written character so I would hope in the future that the majority of the story is with her at the center.

It's dual, even in situations where Ken is not in the action, he is still doing important stuff. They have never not been in it together more or less. Trying to keep it spoiler free.

Even if Momo can be considered the protagonist, Okarun has a larger presence than just a “male lead” in a series with a female mc typically would.
I’m inclined to say it’s about 55-45, where Momo is just a bit ahead. But if this series started to shift its focus only to one of the 2 characters, it would be losing part of what makes it special

If they were separate then the series would lose its charm. I love what I’ve seen of Momo so far, but if Okarun was just a supporting character I probably wouldn’t enjoy it as much.

Usually the one shown first is the main character. So far it is not very clear who the MC is because the story is evenly split , but since The first scene was Momo with the ex bf, I will say Momo is the protagonist.

How the fuck is it so hard for you people to grasp the idea of dual MCs. Even the special video we saw at the Dandadan theater screening confirmed this. Tatsu and even both Momo and Okarun's VAs said they're both the MCs. You can't have Dandadan without one or the other, they're BOTH the core of the story.

After episode 7, I would not be overly surprised if Ken wound up third behind Momo and Aira.

well yeah, but I kind of see them both being, it's 50/50, I honestly never rly thought about who is protagonist, I'm so used to male being, but like other people said, all the things we saw from the start suggest that it's Momo.

Both are the protagonists of the work, Momo is the female protagonist and Okarun the male protagonist, in a story there can be more than one protagonist. They both are, I don't know why some people believe that only one of them is.

That has nothing to do with it, they are both protagonists, that thing about appearing first on the screen doesn't make much sense sometimes. Believe me, there are works where another character is the one who appears first than the protagonist or protagonists, and that does not always mean that the character who appeared first is the protagonist, the story is about the two of them.

Obviously someone must appear first, not even if they were Siamese, what you say doesn't make much sense either since Okarun appears practically at the same time as Momo, which is chapter 1 and in the manga it is the same.

Momo is a solid protag though plenty of shounen have a fem C. Girls only series are fairly common. It is rarer from a battle standpoint though.

@deg While I for the most part agree with what you have said, I must mention that (saying as an anime-only) that the anime has done a good job in presenting both Momo and Okarun as the main characters.

By first appearance, I’m not alluding to chapters, just the order they’re introduced in general.

Yeah, it’s obvious they’re both the protagonists, we’ve seen this done in action shonen before; I was focusing more on the fact if there were a leading protagonist it would be more so momo rather than okarun, especially since you see less of okarun as the manga goes on.

Momo isn’t the central focus of the franchise, but there’s always a protagonist that the story fixates on the most between 2 or more main characters. Like Yui from K-ON, Itadori, Gon etc etc.
It'll all be okay in the end. If you're not okay, it's not the end.

Informative post. I thought this was the case from the story itself, but it's nice to see it supported by the author as well.
