A notable aspect of this anime is its commitment to realism, recognizing that a player shouldn't have the capability to overcome an opponent who isn't even in the same league.

Before the struggling Sunraku against the Red Cap, suddenly appeared Lycaon the Nightslayer, one of the Seven Colossi. For a year since the game started, this unique monster, which none of the 30 million players have been able to conquer, unleashes a one-hit kill attack. Despite managing to withstand this devastating blow and counterattack, the overwhelming difference in strength remains insurmountable. However, Sunraku enjoys this adversity, savoring the divine game known as Shangri-La Frontier.

A player below level 15, attempting to face off against a unique monster, was bound to meet a swift demise. Such is the fate of those who rush through the game without heeding any tips or delving into the lore. The boss fight was exceptional; imagine the outrage if he had somehow triumphed through some absurd vorpal blade trick. If the series is to stay true to the games, there's no way an endgame boss, capable of vanquishing entire guilds, would succumb to a novice. The curse adds an intriguing twist, setting up Wolf-boss as a fitting objective following his bold proclamation. It also ensures the protagonist remains as unforgettable as when the journey began.

His torso, arms, and legs slots have been afflicted by a curse... However, items can still be equipped on the head, neck, hands, shorts, waist, and feet. Sunraku must unravel the mystery of that howl and equip an item that provides immunity against it quickly..

Damn, this early on in the show and our main guy already encounters one of the toughest monsters in the game, supposingly not been captured since the beginning of the game.

This episode should serve as a wake up call for Sunraku to realize just how dangerous their world can be. Then again, he fought with heart so gotta respect that. The RPG elements are also in full swing with levels, stats, etc.

To think there are a total of seven unique monsters in the game, and not even once someone has successfully taken down either of them from a player base of millions, kind of gives an idea about the level they stand on. Now there are literally clans formed for the sole purpose of defeating these unique monsters, but there is our protag… going up against one of them all alone.

The fight between Sunraku and Lycaon was dope as hell. I mean the animation and fighting choreography is the best thing about this series out of anything thus far, and they’re maintaining the standards. Though surprisingly the dude didn’t defeat the monster… I was lowkey expecting he will, given that’s the norm usually xD

So defeats have repercussions right? And that was the Lycaon’s curse for the dude. A bunch of things to be precise, but most important among them being that now he could not equip weapons to the place he was stung by the poison. Bad luck, but now he’s already invited in one of the unique scenario side quests… in the rabbit country.

I know they were trying to make him menacing, but I laughed at the sight of that rabbit boss or whoever lol.

Damn the animation goes hard. If they nail the Wezaemon battle, C2C may become included in the same league as Madhouse, A-2 & Bones.

There are much more new anime with really good animation than usual this season.

Good to see that he didn't defeat it because of some OP MC power.
Why the hell did the door show the recommended level only after Sunraku entered it lol?
That looks like boss room!
Episode passed by in a flash.
This is really great so far! And I didn't even plan to watch it at first.

Watch the after credits scene too pls!

Btw in the credits AMD is credited under "Filming equipment cooperation". I wonder what exactly did they provide?

Rei continues her stalking of Sunraku, and some players are also in the know of these unique monsters, of which the Seven Colossi are of one according being strong monsters. And Sunraku just so happened to encounter into one, Lycagon the Nightslayer. And every bit of that fight is as intense as it gets, trying to read the enemy's attacks and defending against its strong attacks, which as Sunraku is, it's completely out of his league. But one thing he knows, is that he's going to beat the Nightslayer next time, applied with its curse marked to his body.

Sunraku's basically screwed once Lycagon's Mark got to him, no matter how strong he could get that only his luck and endurance could get him so far. That said, a bunny just leaping onto him, it's not just some Vorpal Bunny, but a gateway to another area based on the main story's side quests. The problem is, Rabituza's requirement was Lv. 80, and Sunraku's only at Lv, 28, which the same rabbit Emul was all gushing about how he faced the Nightslayer a.k.a Night Emperor, which was one effect of the Mark. Up they go to the palace, and aside form being the first player to enter, it looks like Sunraku's luck is changing for the better...though Emul's dad, or rather the rabbit boss Vysache, what does he have in mind for Sunraku?

Being a main story and boss fight player has its perks, and Sunraku's earned it.

Interesting idea: get a huge debuff for loosing a boss fight but gain access to additional game content. I wonder if this would work in real videogames.

Encountering A unique monster would otherwise be a great thing if it didn't so horribly wrong for Sunraku. We get an interesting explanation about the seven unique monsters in this game. How they're all super powerful of course but that their spawns are basically random, meaning that Sunraku got totally unlucky encountering this night Wolf. Putting all those skill points into his luck stat may have it's advantages but not this time. Sunraku isn't nearly strong enough to fight something like this unique monster. He does good enough for a minute using his speed to dodge and land minimal strikes of his own. I loved how excited he got at the fighting a super strong monster with no bugs or bullshit game mechanics like the trash games he's been playing. The enjoyment Sunraku gets out of playing an actual good tier game is one of my favorite parts of this show. However with his strongest weapons wearing down it becomes time to go for broke. Sunraku trying hard as he can go land critical hits but this night wolf is just too strong. A crazy move his this wolf disappeared then slashed off Sunraku legs. That luck stat betraying Sunraku again by not letting him just did instantly, leading to the wolf inflicting that curse upon him. Stuck with those curse marks and unable to actually wear armor on most of his body now. Bad luck strikes again, but luck comes in waves as Sunraku meets this little bunny. Leading him to a unique event only he's ever found out of any players ever. Very funny how the recommended level is insanely higher than Sunraku current level but he has no idea. For a player whom dumps a lot into his luck skill you could argue Sunraku isn't very lucky after all.

I was happy when the unique monster showed up in ep 2, thinking he will be destroyed effortlessly.

But lv 14 managed to avoid taking hit for 5 mins while landing 200+ critical hit? kuso story of a kusoge in a kuso anime. I imagine kuso mc will fail, hard, in ep 4 due to 52 lv difference. God tier game with no parameter restriction on level difference surely... can only exist in a shitty story.

@Janko Do we consider it a debuff though?
At first sure, looks like one, but after the rest of the episode I'd say that only fucks you in one scenario, and is if it caught you after you specialiced being a tank.

Equipment cannot be equipped in certain slots, yeah this is the bad part, but if you are a glass cannon, outside of the social component of the game (which people should see the mark and understand it if they understand the logo of a top tier clan) he proved that his equipment did jack shit for his play style.

Low level monsters flee, might suck for grinding materials, but I guess there are workarounds in a suppossedly god-tier game, like sneak attacks, ranged, etc

Conversations with NPCs changing made me think that it'd affect him in the shops, but the first interaction is admiration for fighting what I guess lore-wise counts as a calamity.

Resistance to magic effects, so probably that roar that made the paralisis effect won't work in the revenge battle and they are covering why from the beginning instead of asspulling it.
Enemies till now have been purely physical, so is easier to guess that magic enters in the difficulty curve really late in the progression system.

He can remove it by reaching one main town (assuming a Saint is an NPC which will be in a Cathedral), so is not like that he can't focus on progressing the story and remove it, but I bet that there's the hidden effect of the curse increasing the chance of the wolf appearing.

Lycagon's such a cool boss, it's an unique monster after all, one of the only seven of them who doesn't respawn. Sunraku held on for a while but at his level and only alone there's a limit to how much he can achieve. Hopefully someday he'll be able to do it. For now he gotta finish the unique scenario that unlocked thanks to Lycagon cursing him. The country of rabbits, the mascot is here.

It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

Just look at these animations, dude! Makes other series from this season look low quality animated, no offense.

I have to admit that the bunny world is so kawaii! It's quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite animes.

This series has all the elements I adore, capturing the essence of MMORPGs. It evokes so many flashbacks of my childhood, from that golden age. I'm sure we'll see a revival with high-quality, immersive virtual worlds someday, or at least that's what I'm hoping for.

Glad he actually lost! That is what should have happened. Not sure what the special ability the wolf has ...? But I'm sure we'll find out in due time.

Dumping a lot of skill points into luck is a good thing. Now there's plot armor, plus what is that old saying? It's better to be Lucky, than to be good? That would be Sunraku!

I really appreciate how grounded this show is. it doesn't have Sunraku being this OP protagonist that could beat something so early in his experience in this game, because trust me, many shows have this trope where the weak, inexperienced player somehow beats the strongest monster. Feels nice and refreshing to see that kind of realism even in a game setting. The bunny city has me quite intrigued, I like the design of the boss, and it provides a detour from the linearity of the game progress for Sunraku.

Sanraku managed to hit him a lot, but damage wasn't quite there. Seems like unique monsters are really unique and not some asspulls. It won't be easy for him to defeat it. Well, it did mark him and he became the dog lmao.
Which also opened another door for him in the volpar world or whatever you call it. Interesting side quest, but the pacing feels a bit slow imo.

What I liked:
- fight scene vs Lycagon
- Lycagon being able to go invis
- losing to Lycagon
- not being found & saved by addicted armour girl
- ribbit
- curse mark debuff
- unique scenario encounter

What I think can be improved:
- introduction of unique monsters by the player trying to impress his female friend (by not repeating facts we knew from eps 2, like "they're abnormally strong")
- fight scene vs Lycagon (by modifying the physics in Sunraku's motions during fight, esp. during landing from jumps & aerial motions like dodging Lycagon's paws thrice)
- debuff emphasis (by not having Sunraku read the debuffs out loud since we already read them all 40 seconds prior)
- explaining differences of: stamina vs hp vs vitality, technique vs dexterity vs agility (would be much more useful than featuring the typical male player & his lady friend)
- recommended lvl showing AFTER Sunraku enters..... feels like an extreme plot-hole (i don't like plot holes .-. i'd rather Sunraku seeing the rec. lvl of 80, yet STILL decide to challenge it because he's confident)

So, I'll launch a prediction: Besides the more famous ones like Eminence in Shadow and Jujutsu no Kaisen, the best anime fights will surely be on Shangri-La Frontier.
