Ryunnosuke got fired up but it amusing to see her put on such a serious face this episode. She kinda deserved that slap to the face tbh.

The second half of this episode was really strange. I mean, a talking star who can grant wishes?? There' something you don't see often.

Ryunosuke saving up her money just so that she could buy a bra, and only having 400 yen on hand, it's obviously not enough. Plus, Shinobu getting stalked by creeps from a rival school of their Butsumetsu High boss being so obsessed about Shinobu, the fake couple game to dissuade for the gift voucher, and that would be one step closer to buying her own bra. Despite interruptions like Ataru, to Ryunosuke, all she cared for was the voucher, and getting Ataru's mom's bra sucked in by the bossman, that's gross.

A shooting star interrupting Ataru's family dinner to then destroy the house, they get 3 wishes, but 1 wasted to restore the house back to normal. Another nonchantly wasted by Cherry, and there's but only 1 wish left. The Wishing Star is so annoyed with the last wish, it leaves the family clamoring for the final wish, and all 4 decide to settle it via a lottery system. How all of this went were all bonkers, and Cherry was to blame...partly for that.

A half-hot, half-cold episode...

The desire for the uniform is real lol. Ryunosuke sure had quite the shock at the lingerie shop though. The bossman for the punks sure had a unique look. But to think that underwear is a such a potent motivator for her though. What was even more amusing was the true origin of that bra. The shooting star though was adorable. Their struggle with the wishes sure ended up backfiring on them. But at least the only thing they need to replace is the window and not the house.

Lmaooo no way he just burnt the 5,000 yen after my girl Ryunosuke went thru all that work for her bra? That’s so tuff. The dream of a sailor uniform and bra seems so far away rn.

Idk why but the star bursting out the window saying have a good day got me crying lmaooooo this show is just good old fashioned fun. Shoutout to David Production for this

Finally! OP and ED lyrics! Took 6 episodes which were long enough.

The Ryuunosuke date episodes in the original were great but man this episode in the Remake was a letdown. It completely eliminated Ryuunosuke's dad from the equation probably because there wasn't enough time to adapt 2 chapters in one segment. He was part of the reason episode 96 of the original was so damn entertaining. And I kind of expected this but they also removed this scene
I was okay with some of these changes at first but with them adding up it's starting to get annoying. Urusei Yatsura's isn't a kid's show ffs.

Welp, rant over. The Wishing Star part was okay but it was nothing remarkable in the first place. Ataru's mom and dad had excellent performances as always.

Next episode the focus will finally go back to Lum. Episode 18 will be released very close to Valentine's day so I find it strange that David Pro isn't adapting the only Valentine's day special chapter there was in the manga.
So I suspect they'll actually combine that chapter with the 2nd part of the episode like they combined Ran's date with episode 16. But I could be wrong. If I am, I hope they'll save it for Season 2 at least. I'm still a bit upset the Tanabata Date chapter was skipped (so far).

all the punchlines this episode were way too predictable especially that 2nd half, kind of wish we got that same storyline again but with the antics of them actually wishing for something instead of cherry copping out.

This is it. This is the make or break in my opinion. This comedy here is exactly what I loved about the original adaptation (When it wasn't making me cry like a little bitch). If you don't like the comedy here, it'll be more or less the same for the rest of the series, and the romance (Which has been very understated up to this episode) probably won't save it for those people. Me though, fuck yeah, this is the Urusei Yatsura I fell in love with. 10/10 episode, both parts.

This one featured two bits I’ve yet to see in the original and I really liked them both, Ryuunosuke focused episodes have all generally been great and I really enjoyed her moments with Shinobu, they looked like a genuinely good couple lol, I also like how enthusiastic Ryuunosuke was since a bra was at stake. And the moments with the “bossman” were hilarious, what a silly design for a one-off character but it fits right in at the same time.

I also really enjoyed the wishing star bit, he was so cute and looks like he belongs in a Kirby game, and of course they’d end up wasting all their wishes thanks to Cherry lol, he’s fun but he’s also a fucko a lot of the time. I really look forward to these bits in the original when I get to them since I enjoyed them so much here.

In the original adaptation, he's not exactly a one-off character, since he shows up a few other times, so maybe he'll come back again here?

Yeah I probably shouldn’t have said one-off since I haven’t seen up to this point in the original yet, he just seemed like a character they made for one episode for a laugh but it’s good to know he reappears.

Well, he actually returns a couple more times. In one episode, there is a fight match between Lum and him ! And Lum cannot use her powers so without others knowing it, she takes some super-strenght pills =)

Upon reflection, comparison to the source, and rewatching the separate episodes for the two parts, I can say that the remake is simply terrible and lacking flavor. The only thing good left is probably the cute design and the color palette. They cut out a lot of the gags, punchlines, changing parts that make things even worse and even removing Mr Fujinammi entirely for the first part. He is the sole reason why this story could be ridiculously funny and impactful by being a comically ridiculous jerk that will do anything just to refrain Ryunnosuke from being a normal girl. Ryunnosuke's attempt on stealing sum of money from the drawer when he's sleeping, praying to the photo of her mum but with many photos all at once, meeting Ryuu and Shinobu while also holding a pic of random woman as her mother. All of these are completely gone same with Ryuu attempt of pulling out Shinobu's bar directly getting her slapped for the second time and Lum indirectly roasting Shinobu for the bust size. Cutting out so many just to make another half could fit the runtime is just saddening to see.

For the second part, why would they think of a good idea to change the design of the Tanabata star? It should be holding a bamboo with three papers so the people could write their wish just like the actual tradition. Not really sure why they decided to change it into a typical maho shoujo magical wand. This tiny details nod to the Japanase culture is also one of the major reason why I love the original UY. I like how in the OG UY, Ataru's dad is given more focus and depth on wishing a dream of having a loving wife, sweet daughter and being a rich family. While he is usually a timid and submissive husband, this story are expanded more of his desire which makes the OG episode (ep 177) great not just sticking to the manga.

Finally we got a story that exclusively about Ataru and Lum in the later half, yay. So far the remake has been really disappointing for me. I'm not really surehow are they gonna do the rest of the episodes if all of them will just like this mess.

In the manga, there are actually 2 chapters that are related to Valentine if I wasn't wrong. One of them has Ryuunosuke involved in it where she receives more chocolates than Mendo. And for Yaminabe, it's more about Ataru trying to figure out what is Lum's most disliked food.

A Shinobu and Ryunosuke episode was surprising but a good combination nonetheless! Her goal of getting a bra is such a big part of her motivation that nearly every line she has on the quest involves combining bra with another word. Stinks that things didn't work out for her! Maybe next time. Second half of the episode was also good with the family playing with a genie. Man that Cherry always knows how to come in and make a situation worse! What a diabolus ex machina.

From what I read, it was Rumiko Takahashi's request for the Remake to target younger audiences. So her input is probably the reason so many things like violence and sexuality are toned down. Urusei Yatsura is family-friendly now unlike the OG show and you can thank the mangaka for that.

That seems to be the case from what I read from this. I thought the introduction episodes for the main cast is good but it all just went downhill the more episodes are aired. Rumiko is encouraging the staff to make bold changes. I guess toning down everything is considered bold....

Takahashi didn’t like the direction of the original anime because it deviated from the source material sometimes. So it sounds contradictory for her to encourage "bold" decisions like this.

I'm quite sure that kind of comment is more like directed to UY 4th movie for how alien its direction to convey the exhaustion of the director to the franchise.

I loved the star guy. He was the best.

I wonder if we will get another more serious episode, like the one where Lum left and Ataru really missed her. I know it's mainly goofy comedy, but episodes like that do a good job at making me care more about the characters involved in said goofy comedy. Kind of like Osomatsu-san.

Did you actually watch the original anime? Because even the manga says otherwise. So I would agree that this anime feels like something she would write today, but it's definitely not an 80s show. And had the original anime turned out like this, or more accurately, the way she wanted, it is very doubtful we would even be talikng about it today.
