Recently, English-speaking voice actor Jamieson Price explained on his twitter why he is no longer involved in the English dub as the voice of Chad. According to him, he deliberately refrained from playing non-white characters in order to empower and represent minority voice actors.

According to him, he does this also because, in his opinion, each actor puts their personal experience into the voice acting, and therefore, the Mexican VA will simply make the voice acting of the Mexican character more authentic and representative. It is not known whether this is in any way related to Japanese characters in various Japanese franchises, as Price had several notable roles in Japanese games as recently as last year.

What do you think about this? English is not my native language and I've never heard the English dub of Bleach so I can't really comment on that.

As I've said before, unless it's something like Encanto where some familiarity with the language is important it shouldn't really matter who voices whom as long as it fits. It's voice acting for fuck's sake.

Why are so many voice actors fucking wokeys nowadays?

As a watcher it's very irrelevant tbh (because the i don't much care about voice acting, i am not gone watch bleach in dub and Chad doesn't have enough role in this arc).
Probably it has may or may not affect on voice industry and his peers (whether it's negetive or positive). Regardless it has no direct affect over me

He voiced Chad for a very long time. It’s going to be strange hearing a new voice. I’ve been watching current season in sub but I watched all of the previous seasons in dub.

Probably referring to the fact that his reason to do so is segregationist within the dub community. Following his logic, all Americans dubbing Japanese characters wouldn't be wrong for quitting for the sake of asian voice actors to take their place for the sake of "proper" representation.

That's not to mention how ridiculous the notion of "life experience" as a given race would basically imply black people dubbing white characters would be included in the equation as well, it's an incredibly stupid reason to advocate to his reason for leaving the role. Voice acting has always been a barrier-free way for anyone no matter which race, nationality and even sexual orientation to freely dub any character as long as they have the right voice for them, this is an inconsistent backwards logic to what the dubbing culture freedom has always been.

Would you be surprised if I told you that the "can non-Asians participate in anime dubs?" discourse has been around for years? By the way, this is one of the reasons why there are so many people with partial Asian origin among Western VAs. Some people also talk publicly about how queer manga should be translated by a team of queer translators and editors and so on.

I was not referring to you, if that is what you're worried about.

Anyway, this topic should be deleted. It has less to do with anime, and more to do with American politics. It doesn't belong here.

If I don't invite people to directly discuss politics, and I obviously don't, this thread is not breaking anything.

Pretty laughable decision on his end. What matters is the voice of the voice actor and not their race, sexuality or anything else. Typical western media moment right here.

In my opinion, he should quit voice acting at this point. Not to offend the guy. He fit the chad perfectly but step down for the role Anyways. I think he doesn't want to va anymore, if not that he just be doesn't like doing black anime characters which kinda racist in opinion. He also did the role for jet black in cowboy bebop and he was black.
Fun-fact:
A popular German author once said that “I think that the only thing that matters is that the voice fits the character,” says Musäus, who is white.
I think anyone no-matter what race you came from can voice act any role for a character .

From what I can see on the internet, he actually refused to give up anime voice acting, stating that if a character's personality isn't built on a "strong Japanese identity" then he doesn't see it as a problem. This is odd since Chad's identity was also not Mexican. And most Japanese, not to mention the characters, value their Japanese identity quite strongly, even if they don't state it.

In the same way Chad's Mexican identity wasn't very significant in the series, that's the case for the vast majority of Japanese characters too. It entirely makes sense. His sentiment isn't wrong at all, but in the case of Chad it really didn't matter much

I can’t agree with that part tho. If a terrorist has to be voiced, then how in the world do you even put personal experience into that. I believe voice acting is giving life to a character regardless of who you are same goes for acting. If the person does a good job then so be it.

I'm not a voice actor, it's hard for me to talk about voice acting on a "spiritual level". According to the Japanese VA, they only care about this when the role requires additional skills. For example, you need a big man or an old woman for a role, or a non-binary actor for a truly androgynous character.

LMAO. The VAs that get typecast as villains all the time must have an innate evil nature from personal experience to bring out the characters.

This guy has a white savior complex and is a clown.

non-binary actor for a truly androgynous character.

99% of the time they just get a woman.

The one time they did this was when got that guy to voice Altair

Because a female voice is easier to sell as androgynous than a male one?

That was the most stupid take I have ever read in my life.

The whole point of voice acting and not having your face shown is that you can play characters you usually wouldn't be able to.

Can you imagine not having Sir James Earl Jones playing Dark Vader because he's black and Anakin was white?

Also, what "life experience" even means in this context?

Does he think every person of Latino heritage have the same background? Specially in this case with Chad who is a 3rd generation living his whole life in Japan where the customs are completely different?

The racial casting thing usually doesn't work when the character is white and you're not. I have never heard a minority actor refuse to play a white character because they are not. For example, it has long been a meme that many tanned anime characters get black VAs based on the logic that tanned = black. Live action version of Nami's sister, VA of Nagatoro in English dub, etc.

What a stupid take especially after what he did later.

That person is just racist. Dude just voiced a Japanese character known as Gonzou Kosugi the next year (2023) from Zoom 100 next year after such comment lol. Japanese characters are not white yet this racist think light skin is white. While it would be understandable if a person think Japanese characters are white since the skin tone is the same, this person don't have any excuse. Too much talk about equality he like to preach yet he fails to follow his own advice lol. Typical woke moment. Pretend to be anti-racist, went full racist later.

@charioteer Dude just played a Japanese character the next year after refusing to play Chad again. He probably saw Chad's skin and the word Mexican and he went woke over it. If dude was truly talking about equality, he shoulnd't play a non-white character the next year after such woke tweet. I won't be surprised if this racist think all Latino people are mestizo ignoring the fact many Latinos are white and black too.
