I legit got jumpscare when this child appeared

ngl that shot was the first time I got shook from the show and that's considering the fact that there have been murders from the start. The primitive shadow that the Ushios fought earlier was also straight nightmare horror.

The shadow's seem to be pure evil and I still don't really get their agenda.

Also I remember them explaining that you cannot be copied by a shadow twice, so I am really perplexed how in the beginning of the episode a 3rd Ushio was copied of the 2 Ushio's already there.

Yeah, I was hoping by now we'd have something a little more concrete than 'kill and replace.'

My thoughts exactly. Hizuru's brother personality explained that when he told Shinpei that Alan's clone was dead. So not only was Ushio cloned twice while alive, but her clone came back after being destroyed. I'll be really ticked off if they don't clear that up.

Damn, the mystery is seriously thickening by the episode but this takes the throne!

Ushio and Shadow Ushio fought well but sadly the Shadows managed to power through. Gee, I was expecting the cake Shiori to pop up from that point but playing the dead girl role like that? That’s nasty. And God, that was a scary facial expression.

Was that “the mother” in the end? Something to do with the eye there, I suppose. Maybe that’s what gives the power to travel back. As to how he/she managed to intervene in the video playback, I’ve no clue…

Ushio and Shadow Ushio’s interactions were hilarious to watch, and that Spider-Man meme came to mind instantly too xD.

Shadow Ushio getting her powers back is a plus but the Shadows connection of info may prove to be more of a loss in the long run? Boy, it should be interesting to see how things will progress from here onwards.

So I guess this explains why Shadow Ushio had her memories all messed up. Still not 100% clear why she is able to resist the urge to murder tf out of real Ushio and such.

Was kinda puzzled when the real Ushino talked normally to the shadow Ushino underwater. I guessed she's a master of underwater talk technique, but maybe the shadow Ushino just knew what she's saying without hearing anything. Anyway, that was a good episode. Can't wait for the next one.

apparently they're not talking loudly in the manga (u know what i mean if u ever read some manga *cus i don't know what's it called lol)

Just when I thought it was unfolding, it got even more complex. I don't know how to feel about this latest development with the supernatural creature getting a hold of Shinpei, but we'll see how it fits with the rest of the story.

It was genuinely an effective jumpscare when Shiori was able to grab Shinpei through the playback, because from seeing other sorts of similar playback scenarios in other media, we're lulled into a sense of security. It's like the show is telling us "there is no safe harbor". and thinking about that mark, it's definitely going to cause trouble, probably VERY SOON. hopefully it doesn't carry over to the next loop, that'd cause massive problems.

Also we still didn't really get an answer as to why Ushio's shadow is different. Is it really just that she has an incredibly strong personality/will? Or is there something else going on? At any rate, Shadow Ushio still considers herself a distinct person. But she was partially corrupted by Shiori, which might be a cause for concern. probably what happened with the playback is that a bit of Shadow Shiori was left in her, which allowed Mother to find Shinpei when he got close to that bit.

Regarding Mother, her design makes her look like some kind of old Shinto deity, and she's revived (?) at the shrine. So she's some kind of ancient spirit/god who was sealed/killed, and the shadows are her servants using human sacrifice to bring her back? I feel like there has to be more to it than that, however that's the logical conclusion with the information we currently have. I also wonder if she's just going to kill everyone on the island, or if it extends further. I think we do have to keep in mind that the Shadow's will is probably ultimately hers.

Its entertaining to see two Ushio talking to each other. ♥(ˆ⌣ˆԅ)

Damn, that sure hurt Shadow Ushio, thinking what would Shinpei think of her being a shadow, since her feelings are the same as Real Ushio, like she loves Shinpei. I wonder where her feelings for him will go. (ಥ﹏ಥ)

The flashback is indeed a tragedy; both Real Shiori and Real Ushio died, and the Shadow Shiori pretend to even drown. Real Ushio died in vain. (╥﹏╥)

The Shadow Shiori underwater jumpscare did shock me xD

While one can elaborate theories about the fact that Ushio can be copied twice, it is extremely jarring to see the rule being bended just to create an unnecessary action scene that also elaborates more inconsistencies just for the sake of shock as it cheapens the groundings of the anime. It was quite a shark jump, I think that the series could have not taken some of the decisions and it wouldnt be an issue.

Anyways, the episode was mindlessly entertaining as always, the ocean scene was quite ridiculous but it was the good type of over the top, I hope that the answers are satisfactory

Fanservice in general isn't well-received by me. Especially if the rest of the series has nothing else offer. Not sure how you came to that conclusion.

I hope they share all the info they just learnt with Hizuru, Mother was terrifying AF how did she catch them in a fuckin memory

Anyway I hope Ushio uses her power now cz she's broken except underwater
It looked like Shori's shadow tried to "reprogram" Shadow Ushio when they were underwater in the memory, so maybe all the shadows are linked somehow to "Mother" and she found Shinpei through her partially restored link with Shadow Ushio.

I really like the islanders accent "Yan"

Ushio sacrificed herself for the Shadow version + Shiori?!

Was Shiori such an important target?

Shadow Shiori is brutal, killing two people in one attempt, made me sad how the real Shiori just dissolved and Ushio just sunk :(. I hope Shadow Shiori won't return anytime soon.

Ushio befriending her Shadow already explains a good bit.

Additionally, looks like they confirmed that some Shadows can be "faulty." Which I guess accounts for them not being fully assimilated with the other Shadows directives and ultimately why they aren't actively working against humanity. Between the cooldown period after copying someone, and now this, looks like they are starting to reveal some weaknesses in the Shadows.

The part at the end with "Mother" interrupting the recording was pretty unsettling. Seems like she's getting tired of Shin's shenanigans.

"...Is your mother worried? Would you like us to assign someone to worry your mother?"

So some random shadow appeared on those old house, and i kind of think, it's an important place to investigate later. Hopefully Shadow Ushio won't forget how important it tho.

The detail behind the death of real Ushio. Shadow Ushio was just too confidence after defeating one random shadow till she realized there's some strong and more talented shadow that can utilize well underwater environment. Its sure sacrifice Ushio as the result, and poor little girl. Rip.

For addition, mother loli insist to meet Shinpei again under those circumstances. Jumpscare indeed, unexpected, but curious to learn more about it, on the next episode...

Great, finally we get to see the whole Ushio's death backstory and more explanations for how she was with her shadow from the beginning and knew that the shadow was a good one and how Shiori's shadow took the place of the real Shiori and killed the real Ushio, though what was really worrying was the goddess' appearance directly in the memories that managed to touch Jinpei for real :o

Very scary ep. That was like, psychedelic crazy. Man, this show would've been a HUGE hit on Adult Swim and been a HUGE iconic series. Ah, the old days.

Just imagining this airing at midnight bring me back ten years ago before the streaming virus took over. This woulda' been a huge f---in deal. Great episode.

It just goes to show, I guess you can't take things for granted. Just imagine, nobody has even seen this show because it was locked behind streaming. Serious AOTY contender it's starting to seem like and only got minimal notes at the time.

Has this great old school feel and it's so well animated and the dub is great. Totally wasted not showing this on cable in the old days. Turning into a great show.

So now we know what happened in the past, though there are still a lot of mysteries to be solved. Why does Hizuru share her body with her brother? Why does Shinpei loop? Why does shadow Ushio loop? Who is by the way pretty damn strong, probably the strongest shadow after the boss loli.
