I think this episode is fitting for mid-season considering it shows how much Eiko has improved after all this time. There's also Kabe, while not being a central character, still gets his deserved spotlight.

Kabe has grown on to me as a likable character in this show now too.

Cao Cao's Short Song Style (or 短歌行, "duan ge xing" in Hanyu Pinyin), is the most famous Chinese drinking poem by the hero of Chaos, and Kongming is gonna use this to rope the former champion rapper Kabetaijin in.

More of Kabe's backstory, and he's a social outcast just like another fatso classmate of his (Sasaki) that's often the target of bullying in school, but is a rapper outside of school. Kabe should be thankful that Sasaki opened his world to fuel himself into rap and getting all the fame.

It's time for the rap battle between Kabetaijin and Kongming, and Kongming draws first blood to call him out and berate his rap of days past. Everyone is affixed onto the freestyle rapping battle, and Kabetaijin does his best but for Kongming...what a freakin' rappin' rhyming session.

The rap battle's not over yet...how about some EXTRA TIME! Using their years with Kongming's Three Kingdoms vs. Kabe's past, plus the use of Cao Cao's poetic Short Song Style, at first it ended up as a lose-win venture for both Kongming and Kabetaijin as the latter comes back with a vengeance, and incidentally had his stomach pain cured. Kongming admit he lost when he got trounced, but Kabe's real wish to get back to the stage as a rapper, it's a win-win for both parties.

Heh, Kongming had his lackeys do all the planning for him, but at least he isn't shameless about it. Sun Tzu's Art of War to entice the enemy to their side and inch their interest, worked out well.

BB Lounge is on FIREEEEE, rap your heart out! Masterpiece episode!

Really enjoyed this episode; the Eiko song and the battle. I like how Sekitoba just randomly showed up next to Eiko and commented on the battle as you'd typically see in shonen fights

Great episode! I really liked the way the rap battle went. After last weeks episode I was worried that it would be a bit stale but it wasn't the episode felt as fast moving as all of the other episodes and that's great!

Kabe could have chosen to answer those girls with answers A, B, or C...and he chose answer Q ...damn, man.

As we've been seeing throughout the course of this anime, Kongming knows how to work both an audience and individuals. In this case, he manages to do both when he calls out Kabe. He throws down the gauntlet in front of everyone to get them on his side (which is really just to get Kabe to join the battle), and then punches Kabe straight in the ego by claiming that he would lose to a complete newcomer. Despite Kabe's prior convictions, he knows that he has a title to defend and cannot resist the allure to defend it.

The rap sequence was great not only because of the Japanese text managing to rhyme with itself, but also for the translation managing to make a completely-worthwhile rhyming equivalent. Converting song lyrics from one language to another AND make them rhyme without doing a disservice to the original text is actually rather difficult to do. It's of course helped by the fact that the on-screen translation does not need to align the same number of syllables (unlike in sheet music), but still, props to the translators!

With those spiritual-esque warriors behind them during the rap battle, I couldn't help but think of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, including the fact that there was some English thrown in there. And "perestroika" managed to make it's way in there!?!?!? Glasnost is feeling left out!

Even though the ending of the episode was predictable, this was a pretty entertaining episode! For now, we press onward!

Bruh... I am glad this opening theme reached me. If I hadn't seen it, then I would have been living under a rock.
I thought this was just a random music genre anime and I instantly skipped it because I already have a ton of animes to watch this season.
The opening theme hooked me into giving this show a chance to watch it.
I instantly binged it up to episode 5 when I finished the first episode.
Nevermind. This show is a masterpiece. I'd bettern't judge a book by its cover anymore.

-Sekitoba approaches Eiko
-Commentate the rap battle.
-Refuses to elaborate further.
-Leaves

Kongming decoction as expected.

I know that these 2 episodes were important, but still, I miss Eiko in the spotlight.

Great episode so much...

That rap was honestly hard for me to follow but still worth.

Everything was great but that last 5 mins really was the desert.

Note: If you watch the ED, Kabetaijin joins the cast. Apparently I missed this last episode.

still a great episode but I miss a little bit of EIKO, it's hard to see her displaced almost to supporting character.

also...is it ok to support the hidden drug in a beverage thing? lol.. for starters that's way too manipulative and dishonest furthermore It's downright illegal ? I know here it's a just a plot gimmick but due to how it's used in real life...not sure if I can support the idea :s

hope EIKO gets back to the spotlight and Koumei gets back to good strategies without lying and manipulating that much XD.

Great episode! Probably my second fave overall. Loved the rap battle, kongming and Eiko were really able to reach Kabe. This show is just getting better and better and halfway thru, I can really say how glad I am I picked this up. Was going to skip out on it because I thought no way a rap anime could be good, couldn’t have been more wrong.

That was fucking awesome. I love that there was actual effort with the rap battles in not just the rhymes/lyrics but the flows too to them 16-bar freestyles. It was nice seeing Kabe really absorb himself into the world of rapping again as Kongming kept on delivering responses back. Kongming's research into getting Kabe to join his side alongside his actual rapping was great to watch as well. I think this is the episode that really solidified to me that this show could be one of the best this year and the run it's had till now hasn't been a fluke. I had so much fun watching this, even the Stand Warriors fighting while Kongming and Kabetaijin were going at each other in the 2nd round was cool.

I don't understand rap at all and specially JP one that I find it barely rhymes but I did enjoy a lot Kongming's delivery and tone on his raping, hopefully there is a lot more Eiko again, she is just too cute but they managed to get a strong ally.

Splendid episode. I read this part in the manga and really enjoyed how it came together, and seeing it animated felt quite satisfying. Really appreciated the effort in making the freestyle lyrics and the seiyuus giving a great effort in rapping despite having likely little to no experience prior. Kongming was really able to help Kabe really rediscover his drive and love for rapping.

"To get the enemy to move as you wish, show them seomthing to their benefit to entice them."

This show's drive so far is no coincidence after all.

Now that's an epic rap battle and I enjoyed it so much. Kabetaijin fired the first shots in the first round, but Ya Boy Kongming answered back with mind numbing bars. Kabe finally agrees to join Eiko and Kongming by using the stratagem of enticing your enemy in order to get them to do what you want.

aww yes finally have the epic showdown between Kabetaijin's rhymes and Kongming's rhymes. That was fucking sick...oh man when they visualized the lyrical attacks as the spirits of warriors appearing behind them and fighting. This turned into Shaman King.

Another Eiko puzzled moment when the two went hard with the R3K references. Sekitoba Kung-Fu is just there to explain everything to her and leaves..

Kongming used Cao Cao's Short Song Style from the opening narration, luring Kabe in for an answer. Said answer won the battle for Kabe but Kongming would achieve his goal of bringing a rapper into the group he's forming with Eiko. Mission accomplished.

Making Eiko sing a song between battles he knew Kabe would be nostalgic for. Make sure the first drink her orders from the bartender secretly contains his traditional medicine cure for stomach ulcers, and most of all, letting Kabe remember how it felt to win a rap battle. The bartender, Eiko's superfan and the genius tactician behind it all, Zhuge Kongming, really done it. Bravo.

Fun fact: the raps in this show are supervised by Micro from Home Made Kazoku (Naruto, Bleach and Eureka Seven).

Japanese Rap always has a unique vibe to it but somehow Kongming managed to make it sound more unique with his flow and chinese poetry, I loved how even with something as modern as Rap they managed to keep Kongming in character instead of unrealistically making him an expert in modern Rap flow overnight that was smart.

If "perfection" was a word for any episode then that's this. The episode literally reversed it's worth through last few frames. First best step of the episode was referencing poems as parallel to rap while keeping intact Kongming's rapping style being like reciting poems and Kabetaijin's rapping style reflecting the modern rapping/rhyme style. I was annoyed halfway through this episode because of two particular issues:
1. Kabetaijin's incidentally melodramatic nostalgic feelings from Eiko's performance without any reason
2. His stomach ulcer didn't become bothersome just because he's facing a rookie

But both were solved by the tactical aspect of the show near the end of the episode.

The tactics:
(1) First Kongming used Eiko's number 1 fan to spy on Kabetaijin which was foreshadowed earlier. He gathered the intel about which song Kabetaijin used to listen before becoming rapper so that he can remember the nostalgic transitional journey from listening to it again.
(2) Then Kongming made Eiko sing that song which was effective enough to solve abovementioned 1st issue.
(3) By the help of BB Lounge's Bartender they were able to solve 2nd issue affecting Kabetaijin physical problem of stomach ulcer.
(4) Getting Kabetaijin on stage was a challenge. But when a rookie provokes a pro by saying "him losing is out of question" it'll definitely hurt ego and thus Kongming was able to get him on stage. Kongming never gave up; allowed Kabetaijin to get back his self confidence by handing him a "realistic" victory yet used lyrics to get upper hand on Kabetaijin's psychology leaving a sense of passive defeat and urge to continue within him which was needed for his further collaboration.

After 2episode build up they balanced Eiko's singing, Kabetaijin's rapping and Kongming's tactic; all the vital elements of the show in this episode. That's the best way to execute most unique music show.

That was very enjoyable!

The way the rap battle turned out at the end reminded me of ERB's Jim Henson vs Stan Lee battle, minus Disney's intervention xD As in they dish each other but there's a turning point in which they encourage each other! lol

Now I'm curious to know how Kabe's rap style will flow with Eiko's singing :P

This anime keeps pleasantly surprising me every single episode. This is the first time I've seen rap in anime that didn't force me to skip it out of sheer cringe.

Given this season's lineup, after just reading the synopses, if someone had told me this would become the show I'd be looking forward to the most every week, I would've laughed my ass off and called them crazy... And yet here we are.

Time to binge-watch every single anime I can into the night until college arrives. SADGE. SUPER SADGE... i probably said it before but Kogming never ceases to amaze.

I really love how his rapping is just reciting poems at a slighty faster speed though, imo it really reflects well his personality, and the fact that he's fully aware of what he's doing but he's not physically talented enough for music since he spends most of time just researching it.

Truly the greatest tactician of all times, i simply love this anime
